My impression was
that it becomes a biannual event in odd-numbered
years
again beginning in 1997. Who knows
. . . if we get lucky we may
actually even see the
World Cup again . . .

The reason they devoted the WHOLE issue in
the past is there was nothing else
to cover. Now,
Worlds are just one of a host of events. Gymnastics has grown

I haven't been to a UMass meet

Who will be at worlds?
There has been some talk as to which Americans will be at the
Worlds
since of the qualifiers, only Dawes has confirmed her entry. Does
anyone
know if top European and Chinese women will be competing? The
Europeans are like a month after
worlds, and I wonder which meet the
European gymnasts would want to peak
for? Of course the Asian
gymnasts
don't have another big warm-up meet
before Olympics so they might be more
inclined to
go to worlds.
An
aside for the other Canadians out there:
perhaps, if there is
a weaker field in PUR
it will improve our chances of making the COA
standard? At this point we could probably use as
much help as we can get...

Team Gymnastics to be cut as Olympic Sport?
Today's Wall Street
Journal reports that in 1993 a special IOC sports
commission
voted to eliminate team gymnastics competition in Olympics after
1996. Although this was a non-binding
resolution, if team competition is
eliminated it
will decrease the "showcase" factor for gymnastics.

Learning to coach...
I am extremely interested in becoming a girls gymnastics coach someday in
the
future. I know a lot about
gymnastics and I know what to look for,
but I need
to learn a lot more. I was
wondering if anyone knew what i
could do to start "training" to be a coach. I know I need to find a gym
with good coaches that could teach me, but I don't know how
to go about
getting info. There is a gym in my city, but I have been
to nervous to
ask if I
could come in and "study" under the coaches (afraid of
rejection). I'm
afraid that coaches may not have the time to "take me
under their wing" to help me. I am pretty good at helping out
with
routines and stuff, but I want more. I have a license to judge
girls
gymnastics for high school in Indiana, but I
haven't been able to
practice and take part since
I am a freshman in college at the moment.
Any kind of help would be greatly
appreciated. I was a manger for
my
high school's team for 3 years and I continue
to help them...Thanks in
advance for any insight
or information people can provide me with.
Gymnastically Yours,
Aaron

Fish jump and L7 leap pass
I am from Montana, and
i can tell you that my club is the only club in
Montana
that calls the Fish jump a fish jump. In fact a coaching friend in
another part of the state laughs at me when I call it a fish
jump. By the
way
I am all for calling a trick by a different name if the gymnast can
understand the trick better.
Last I just went to a
meet in Region 1 and noticed that my level 7's
were
the only girls on floor throwing a stag leap in their leap pass. I
looked at
my book, the updates, asked a fellow coach (when I got home) and a
Montana
Judge what the leap pass is and they all say it is a stag. A judge at
the meet I attended said it is a regular split leap. Could somebody clear
this up for me?

Additional E/D
This has been bothering me for a long time so I hope
someone can help
me. In elite competition, you know the base
score is 9.40 and bonus
points are .6; .3 for E-.2
& D-.1; and .3 for combination.
I am confused about the additional
E/D. The Code
says that E and D skills may be used only ONCE for
additional E/D.
So, does that mean you have to have an E to be able to
start from a
10.0? Like, you couldn't do just 3 D's for the 3 tenths, or
can you?
But then again, like Lavinia Milosovici's beam set, I don't think she
has an E in it but I believe she starts from a 10.0?
Help!

Friday - Jan 9th
U.C. Davis
hosted two other schools from the U. C. system for a three-
ring circus. It
would have been fun to have UCLA there to make it a
complete
representation of all U. C. affilliated gym
teams.
The
first rotaion started Cal on Bars and Davis on
Vault. Cal started
their domination of the evening with a 47.875 Bar set score
led by Heather
Schneider's 9.875. Davis had two Aggies, Shauna Duggins and Alix Alderman,
hit their personal
best on vault.
The
second rotation brought Santa Barbara to vault and Davis to bars.
Santa
Barbara's April Sargent, who had an elbow injury last season, showed
great form on a front-tuck-half for a 9.75, which gave her a
second on vault
for the night. On bars, Davis' Erika Cronk and Alix Alderman set
personal
bests.
Third rotation moved
Cal-Berkeley to vault and the Santa Barbara Gauchos
to
bars. Cal again had a good night
with a 47.80 set score. Except for
one
Gaucho score (April Sargent's) Cal had the top five vault scores of
the
night.
The two top scores were from Heather Schneider's Front-tuck-half
(9.775)
and Lisa Washington's front-pike (9.75). The Gauchos had a good
night on bars, with Alison Georgetti
(9.775) and Georgina Lillich (9.625)
placing second and third for the meet.
At the half-way
point the Cal Bears led with 95.675 followed by UCSB
Gauchos
(93.775) and the Davis Aggies (92.375).
Davis took the beam and Santa
Barbara took the floor for the fourth
rotation. Davis was making a good effort on beam,
but had to count five
falls. On floor, Santa Barbara's Alison Giorgetti scored a team high of
9.75
for second place.
The fifth rotation brought UCSB to the beam and Cal-Berkeley to the
floor. Gaucho
Alison Giorgetti led her teammates again with a 9.575
which
earned her a third on beam. She mounted with a front tuck and had a
clever
dive to a headstand which leads down to the
beam. On floor, Cal tried some
new things and had to count one fall. They had their weakest set score of
the night (47.725) and were bested by UCSB and Davis. The bright spot of
the rotation was Freshman Emily Bails' personal best (9.725)
and third on
floor. Freshman Angela Mapa also earned a personal best 9.60.
In the final rotation, Davis
showed their stuff on floor. It was
their
best set score of
the night and the top floor set as well - 47.875. Holly
Balchus
(9.775), Alix Alderman (9.725) and Jennifer Wong
(9.675) each earned
a personal best and first,
third and fifth on floor. On Beam, Cal had to
count
one fall from the beginning of the set. The rest of the team rallied
to the occasion and stuck their routines. High points of the set were
Angala Mapa's front tuck mount
plus a Popa, and Emily Bails' BHS, layout,
layout pass.
The teams
finished with a fair amount of distance between them. Cal-
Berkeley stayed in the lead
with a 190.80, followed by U. C. Santa Barbara
(188.05) and
U. C. Davis (185.50). All-around
honors went to Heather
Schneider (38.35) from Cal
and Alison Giorgetti (38.20) and Kim Weigle
(37.325) from Santa
Barbara.

Georgia topped out again with a team score of 197.2x over
Auburn's
192.xx and Illinois St. 187.xx. If you haven't heard already,
Georgia
scored an NCAA record on vault with a 49.925. One judge gave
5 out of 6 gymnasts
10.0's which of only 2 were really deserved,
Julie Ballard's and Karin Lichey's.
Auburn really came on strong
with a good
start on vault. I believe the best
of the season.
Georgia finally stayed on the beam but had 2 falls on bars,
one from
Julie Ballard's DOUBLE FRONT dismount!
I was really impressed
with Auburn. This meet gave them a
lot of
confidence. They have 2 full-ins on floor, Erin
Gannon and Kim
Smith. Smith has
the highest leaps I've ever seen.
They had a
couple of falls on bars and beam
but overall a great meet.
Illinois St.
saw a near perfect handspring-front from one of
their
girls-9.875(start value 9.9).
*****This
may have been the first meet in which 3 sisters competed.
Becky Balogach and Sarah Balagoch are
on Auburn's team and Becky's
twin sister is on
Illinois St. team. They all did
well.
That was neat!!
Auburn's coach Robert Dillard seemed in high
spirits for the first
time I've seen in a while, eventhough he didn't get to coach because
of a cast he had on his arm.
Becky Erwin of Auburn still
isn't going all-around. She only competed
bars and
beam.
Lori Strong won the all-aound again and
showed a new tumbling pass of
a 2 1/2 twist punch
front for an opener. First one I've
seen other
than Chelle
Stack's when she was at OU.
Thanks!

One sad note from the meet: Stanford
sophomore Tim Dalrymple suffered a
season-ending injury on a fall from high bar. He apparently continued
to train for two days after the meet, thinking it was a
muscle pull.
After the pain did not subside, he had it examined; tests
revealed a chip
fracture of the C-4 vertebra as
well as sprains at two levels. (No
signs
of nerve/spinal damage) He is in surgery
today, and there seems to be
nothing to indicate
that he won't be back at full strength by next season.

Kentucky 195.40; second highest team score in

Merritt Booth is

Hi!!!
Some one asked about twisting
vaults, and their SVs. A handspring double full
is
worth a 9.7. A 2 1/2 or higher is worth a 10. I think that if you do
1/2-2/1
it's worth a 9.8, but I could be wrong. There are also
more twisting
vaults that are worth a 10. One is a
full on full
off. But I could be wrong,
it may be full on 1 1/2
off. I can't remember.

to remember something. The OLympics is a very
scheduled event and
you can't just add three to
six days of team competition in hopes of
getting
everything in on the set amount of time for the Games. Perhaps they
(IOC)
worried about the fact that it would have made the gymnastics competition
way too long and would have removed some of the attention to
other sports
such as Track and Field and Swimming,
two sports which draw alot of
MONEY AND
SPONSORSHIP and also run over several days.
There may have been
reasons other than these. I doubt it was the IOC's dislike
of gymnastics competitions. I bet that they could sell out
the Stadium for
complusories!!!!
Jeff.
Still
flame proof and loving it.

Aren't inverted and eagle grip giants the same thing?
While the arm position and method of getting into Eagles and
Inverts
is similar, they are different positions and different giants.
In
both positions the arms are maximally twisted inward (i.e. the
right arm twisted counter clockwise and the left arm twisted
clockwise).
It
is kind of hard to describe wrist position. A flexed wrist is
when
your wrist curls in the same direction as your fingers when you make
fist. An
extended wrist moves in the opposite direction. As an example
you
have to have an extended wrist to do a handstand on floor.
In
an Eagle the wrist is flexed. When
you go over the top on this
giant your hand is
under the bar, and so you have to lead with your shoulders
because your wrists need to be over the bar to support your
weight. Your
wrist
is always following your motion around the bar in an Eagle.
In
an Invert your wrist is extended.
When you go over the top on
this giant your
hand is over the bar, which means you can support your
weight
and don't have to dump your shoulders over the bar. When doing
Inverts the shoulders are
in line with the body. The arm
position of
Inverts requires more flexibility than
Eagles.
You
don't tend to see Eagles in many high level competitions as
they are mainly a stepping stone to Inverts. They will tend to be faster
because you can't support your weight over the top like you
can in an
Invert.
So
the main differences are the wrist and shoulder postions.

UM vs Utah on sat.
For all of you UM
fans...
I would put this on the collegiate update, but it is just a
precursor to
the meet...
Rumors here at
UM:
6 out of 12 of our gymnasts have injuries....needless
to say we are
concerned. Our two freshmen, beth
and kathy, are aware that
they have to
keep doing well to support the team,
a lot of pressure on two 18 year olds.
-The word is that Tina Miranda
has torn her acl...she's out for the
season, she has been a strong performer on bars for us.
-Nikki
Peters will probably not compete.
-Kristen Duff and Lisa Simes have been cleared to practice and their
status is still up in the air.
-Dianna Ranelli and Heather Kabnick are
questionable.
Beth and Kathy have really stepped up. Wendy has always been strong.
Andrea
has placed in the top three AA in most meets.
I will be crossing my fingers on
sat. I will try to report as
detailed
info as I can about this meet.
Till then..wish us luck :)
GO
BLUE!!!

Regarding NCAA judging, I have to say that it has gone
nuts in the last 5-6
years. Even as recently as 1990-91, it was a
real triumph for a team to
break 190.00. Now that score can't even get to
Regionals!
The top routines lose their value if mediocre or average
routines receive
unjust scores.

It just means you can't get
extra D/E bonus for the same skill more than
once. If you do 3 *different* D's, you can get
0.3 (assuming you meet
value part requirements and
all that)(rules on how many times you can use a
skill
depend on whether you're looking for value part credit, extra D/E
bonus, or connection bonus. The above refers only to extra D/E
bonus).

Re: International Gymnast
I'd have to say my biggest complaint with IG
lately is that they still only
run 10 issues a
year. The summer and spring sessions are becoming the most
eventful ones, with the Olympics, Nationals, Olympic Trials,
Europeans all in
that time frame, but there are
still only two issues during the summer. With
the
lag time from printing the issues and trying to cram all of these events
into just a few issues, a lot is lost. I'd rather pay a few
dollars more and
get 12 issues a year. Sometimes
were' hearing about the summer events months
after
they happen.
