Is this not true? How old is she?

Re: Israelis in the Europeans
Hi,
I am a geography major so I
think I can shed some light on the
israel/europe thing.
The middle east is not its own continent
and
therfore must be put
onto a continent. Syria, Israel, lebonon, and
jordan,
are considered european for sporting events. Iran iraq, saudi
arabia, and so on are considered asia. In
reality, this is a separate
region of a completely
different culture than any other continent.

Shannon may miss Trials and re:
Israel in Euros
Greetings fellow Gymners!
There
is a blurb in today's USA TODAY saying that Shannon Miller may
miss the Olympic Trials due to her wrist injury. The blurb also says
that her Nationals all-around title makes her an automatic
Olympic Team
qualifier. (Huh?)
And as to Israel being
in the European Championships, I think a large
part
of that has to do with Israel and its neighbors not being the very
best of friends.
In most continental championships or whatever, I think
Israel
competes in Euros.

Yes,
Kris Burley is Gymnastics Canada's Athlete of the Year for 1995-96.
He was
the 1995 National Champion, ranked first from Elite Canada, and
placed 10th of floor at the 1996 World Championships. He will be competing
at the Olympics.
It's Alan Nolet

Olympic Trial Tickets For Sale
My daughter's gymnastics team has
purchased a block of strip tickets for the
Olympic Trials in Boston and
several people are unable to use their tickets
for
the Men's Compulsories on Thursday, June 27. These tickets are in the
1st and 2nd row of the balcony on the side of the arena (not at the
ends).
The following tickets are for sale at $14.00 a piece.
Balcony
312
Row 1, Seats 1, 3, 6
Row 2, Seats 4, 7, 8
Since our team
members have bought the tickets for the entire first and
second
rows, the intervening seats either will be empty or you will easily
be able to switch seats so you can sit together. I am only
posting the seats
for those gymnasts or parents
who actually asked me to try to sell them so far.
The ticket for Row
1, Seat 1 (Balcony 312) also is available for the Women's
Compulsories on
Friday, June 28.

USA:TV Alert on TBS
At 9 p.m. EDT Sunday, June 30, TBS offers
"America's Greatest Olympians,"
a
two-hour special from Greenspan's Cappy Productions
and Turner Original
Productions.
American athletes including Greg
Louganis, Mary Lou Retton and Bob Beamon
--
along with lesser-known figures -- are featured in
this look at a
century of U.S. achievement.
Also
being aired is: "Greatest
Moments of the Olympiad with Bud
Greenspan," an hour-long syndicated
special that began airing nationally
this month
(check local listings).
Greenspan also did the 1976 series "The
Olympiad" on PBS.
He is famous for telling about people who came
in last ...
He cites his
favorite story of dedication, involving Tanzanian runner John
Stephen Akhwari.
"He finished an hour and a half
after everybody else in the 1968
marathon,"
Greenspan says. "I asked him afterward, `Why'd you do this, with
no chance of winning?'
"He looked at me like I was crazy
and said `Mr. Greenspan, I don't think
you
understand -- my country did not send me 9,000 miles to start the race.
They
sent me 9,000 miles to finish the race.' "

(Apologies to

This was a thread

As long as I'm posting to the list, here's a relevant
question which I
couldn't find answered in the

mentioned
several times but have until now simply
wallowed in my ignorance.

Hello all,
I have been unsubbed for a long time (had a baby last year - not
really
up to date on things at all) but I wanted
to subscribe to ask a few basic
questions about
the Olympics that I thought you all would know. Thanks
for
your help.
How, exactly, does one qualify for the Olympics?
When
are the qualifying meets (nationals? the trials?)?
When will these be
televised and on what stations?
Thanks very much for your help -

OLYMPIC GYMNASTICS SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST NAMED.
A professor from here at
my place of work (Purdue University at West

sport's psychologist for the
US Olympic Gymnastics Team
yesterday. I Heard a 'blerb' about it on
the
radio this morning (only the last half) but I
did not catch the name.
There was nothing in the school newspaper today,

Anyone know anything

and ask if she's sell
autographs or if she'll tell
us stories about the trip.

Kerri, at UCLA, could possibly vie for another Olympics!
...and even if she doesn't, you'll definitely want to get a
look at her
floor exercise after Valorie Kondos gets to work on
it. Those of you who
haven't seen the UCLA women compete are really missing out
here. Kondos
is
possibly the best choreographer in the
country. She really knows how to
use
a gymnast's strengths, especially if back
flexibility is one of them--see
Amy Smith and Luisa Portocarrero.

Oh
wow!!!! You're making me anxious for *after* the Olympics!!!
The problem
is, I wish Valorie could re-work that exercise
*before* the
olympics....
Hey,
I just realized something. Kerri will be the first Bela
Karolyi 2x Olympian in the US (hopefully!!!) and when she
goes to UCLA
next fall, she will be the first Karolyi Olympic gymnast to compete
gymnastics
in college! :)

UCLA Choreography is really really
good... There have been many memorable
floor
routines like Leah Homma's from '93 (great music) and anything Stella
does and who can forget Amy Smith's great performance to
that Offspring
song...
They dont use that bad Tijuana techno that the other schools
tend to use.

This is not entirely
true. Chelle
Stack competed for at least a
year with the
University of Oklahoma. The only
other former Karolyi
gymnasts
(although not Olympians, which I know was what you are referring
to) that I know of who competed NCAA are Tina Snowden (Standford? I"m not
sure) and Carol
Ulrich (UCLA). Both competed at the
Olympic trials in
1988, but didn't make the team obviously.
I
also hope that Kerri, and others (possibly Borden?) will remain
on the National team during college. This may be easier, now that there
are no compulsories, but if Kelly Garrison did it, we know
that it's
possible. Hopefully the NCAA judging requirements
will be more conducive
to this this next
cycle.
Chris.

I
definitely agree that the top 6 from USA's are a lock for the
team, but I really think that any of the remaining trials
competitors
could make it. The top 6 from USA's all have world
championship
experience, as do Powell, Kulikowski, Arnold, and Chow. Thompson is
quickly
getting back into form, and Mohini would have made Sabae (and a
top ten at
USA"s this year) if she could get her compulsory BB and FX
together. US
trials are going to be closest ever, very intense, full of
emotion etc.
It's going to come down to the last routine for the last
spot IMO. Expect
the standings to change often after each rotation
(especially
since trials count 100% this time).
Look how much the
standings at USA's
changed as the meet when on? I can't
wait to see it!
Chris.

Any word yet on whether either Amy Chow or Andree Pickens were

I
was under the impression that the decisions on both Chow and Pickens would
have been made at the same time, last Sunday. I haven't heard a thing,
though. Btw,
Pickens pulled out due to an injury in warmups on a
slightly
undercooked Yurchenko

after
she hit several gorgeous Y 1 1/2s.

israel does not lie on any border

My understanding is
that Israel was placed in "Europe" for political reasons,
i.e. at the time the decision was made, several Muslim

compete if Israel was

I think that IS the reason . . . or do you

Yeah, which is why I'm not crazy about having the Trials
count 100%. Should
making it to the Olympics be based on only the performance
at *one* meet? It
makes for a more exciting meet
at Trials, sure, but does it select the best
team?
Along
the same lines, I think the best way to determine an All-Around
champion is without New Life rules and *with* compulsories,
but obviously
TPTB disagree
