Intro.
Hi all.
I
thought it was about time I introduced myself, I've now been with
the forum for nearly 6 Months and have been talking to some
of you privatly.
My name is Martin I've been involved with Gymnastics for the
past
15 years, I'm very keen and active person within the sport in Ipswich
(U.K).
Except for my full time job i must eat,
drink, and sleep gymnastics. I
originate from the
sport of trampoling where I turned to gymnastics when
I
retired. After 15 years I still have many goals
within gymnastics, one is to
go to the U.S and
train with a number of clubs, perhaps somebody could email
me and tell me the best way to approach this.
I love the
information that i receive through GYMN-L, PLEASE
KEEP IT COMING.

Hi:
The word has gotten out here in Phila. among the Temple gymnast
and alums,
that there are men's optional tickets
for sale. (there
is a large demand
here because of Bill Roth being
from Temple) I am no longer just
looking
for 3, but for tickets for Saturday night
in general. Some of you have
already contacted me with tickets you have available, now I
am asking the
rest of the club and congress
attending folks out there -- do you have
extra
tickets or ones that would go to waste because of the package sales.
I have
requests for all pricing levels.
So, if anyone has tickets that
they want to
sell please contact me (crosson@pharm.med.upenn.edu).
Thanks.

Both
Korostileva and Bakhtina
competed at the Jr. European Team
Championships in 95, and Bakhtina competed at Jr. European Youth Days in 95
as well (which Kuznetsova
won). Korostileva
was the Russian entrant for
this year's American
Cup (I don't think she made finals).
Bakhtina was also
listed
as part of the Russian delegation to the Worlds in Sabae,
but did not
make the trip (which means that they
had listed her as a possible candidate
a few
months before, when the list was drawn up).

Trampolines
Can anyone tell me if there are somewhat safe backyard
tramps and the best
stuff to surround them with
(wood chips? outdoor padding?). I
know that
nothing is risk free. I have a 13 year old who jumps on three
different
neighbors' tramps (the 14 foot circular
one from Sears) all the time.
I
either have to tell her not to play with
her friends, or to do it at our
house. She has taken gymnastics for years,
loves the sport, but is not on a
team anymore, so
she can't get "enough" tramp time. Any help, opinions, data
would be appreciated.

Old Gymnasts etc.
Does anyone know how Onodi
is doing? I heard that she was
training in Texas
for Atlanta, but that news was
from a while ago.
Also, while I'm here, I have to comment on Amy
Chow. She throws amazing
tricks
but does her form bother anyone else as
much as it does me? Her legs are never
locked-out straight & her feet are never completely
pointed. It almost pains
me to watch. Her
level of gymnastics would be raised so much by just
improving
the form. I don't know, I would say
I'm being picky, but this is
gymnastics--picky is
the norm!
I remember seeing someone say that Boginskaya's
floor seems so much more of
wiggling than
dancing. I agree
wholeheartedly. It is such a shame
after
Bolero and the like...such a waste. Maybe it is something in Karolyi's water
that affects
the dance!
Are there any other
"old" gymnasts coming back for Atlanta?
Also, I am impressed
with really good leaps on floor. I
think that Brandy
Johnson was one of the best leapers ... does anyone else
have any nominations
or just any other great
leapers?
One more thing...I just saw the "Battle of the
Sexes" competition and I must
say I think
it's a great direction for the sport.
The routines were great,
but one my
favorites parts was when Chainey gave Amy Chow a
much-needed
hug after her uneven bars problems. Also, I think Moceanu
and her personality
are great for the sport. So much has been made of the stoic
gymnasts that
Dom's ecstasy after getting that 10 on floor was
refreshing. Even if her
gymnastics isn't the most difficult, her demeanor is
great.
Okay, I think I'll stop (finally!).
-Joy
PS--I've
just watched a tape fo the
1990 World Cup and I find it extremely
ironic that Boginskaya was about to retire after ever competition at
17.
Who would've figured that the unhappy teenager would be the one to
bring the
"old" gymnasts back with her
rejuvenated gymnastics at 23?

results from Men's Europeans
Hi everyone-
I'm not sure if
anyone has posted the men's final European results, but I
thought I'd go ahead and write what I know (they were
reported in the
Washington Post on Monday). Sorry in advance for cluttering
the list if
this has already been posted. The only information that was given in
the
article was that Ivankov
won the AA and Scherbo was second. Scherbo
came
back to win gold medals in the p-bars (a tie
with Rustam Charipov),
vault
(9.643), floor, and a bronze on high bar. Ivankov was
second on the pommel
horse, third on p-bars
(9.712) and fourth on rings.
Also in vault, Dieter Rehm
(9.556) of Switzerland was second and Cristian
Leric (9.512) of Romania was third.

Yes. Her floor
choreography is painful to watch, too.
Though she's certainly NOT the
only American elite with lousy choreography,
that's
for sure. I think we should ship our
selected Olympic squad to France
for a crash
clinic in dance and interpretive movement.
That French team has it
all! I was so happy to finally see several of
their routines during the recent
Budget dual meet; these young ladies
confirmed what many people have been saying
for a
couple of years now : the French
girls are redefining floor exercise!
And while we're on the
subject...I am no expert, I'll admit that right now. I
am not
even sure of all the technical terms, though I try to read as much as can
to familiarize myself with the technical aspect of the
sport. So when I say
this, I'm certain those of you who ARE technical can define
what I am about to
describe better than I
can. So, here goes...
The
one thing that REALLY annoys me in many women's fx routines as of late
(especially
the Americans) is the tendency, which is probably dictated by the
code of points, to dance over to an area of the mat, stand
there, and then do
three consecutive straddle
jumps OR two straddles and a Popa OR two straddles
and a sheep jump OR...(You get the picture?)
As I
mentioned, I am sure that this is probably required in the code, but it is
awful! Wouldn't
you agree? So few girls do this
consecutive leap series well
(the Chinese and,
again, the French come to mind), most of the girls look
silly...like,
"OK dance over to this corner and boing, boing, boing." It
is
usually completely unrelated to the music and looks so out of place in
most
cases.
When I watched the World Team Trials in person last October I can't
tell you how sick of this trend I became.
If you
don't understand what I'm talking about because I have explained it
poorly, just watch Moceanu or Chow
or Teft OR basically any of these girls.
This
element is present and looks totally out of place in every example.
Yuck!
Just
my opinion,
Cole

Re: Russian Nationals
Thanks to Troy for
posting the results of Russian nationals! In response
to
the question about Yevgeny Shabayev,
yes, he does compete for Russia but is
still
recovering from shoulder surgery. Other Russians still undergoing
rehabilitation from injuries and/or surgery are Vasilenko and Zhukov. This info
comes
from the Russian team doctor, whom I spoke to at Men's Europeans in
Copenhagen
(expect some sort of post on that meet later, once I sort through
all my mail and see what's already been reported). Nemov did not compete in
Copenhagen because of a sore
shoulder, but it seems not to have hindered him at
Nationals! :) With Shabayev's status "iffy," I think Nemov and Voropayev are
Russia's
best hopes for AA medals in Atlanta. And if Podgorny
hits on floor, it
would be simply criminal not to
give him the gold (I thought he deserved it in
Copenhagen, but...). I was
very happy to see Kharkov in the top 8 at nationals.
Russian coach Arkayev did not allow him to compete AA in Copenhagen and
he was
VERY upset. His only chance to make the team for Atlanta was to turn
in a good
performance at nationals and Russian
Cup, and then train well afterwards. He is
in
fantastic shape and can still throw amazing skills. IMO he'd be a big
asset
to the Russian team (more so than Trush, for example, and even Karbanenko,
who
tends to be very inconsistent). According to
Kharkov, the team will be
hand-picked by Arkayev at pretty much the last minute. He said *no one* is
a
shoo-in, not even Nemov!
I was pleasantly surprised to see that Bondarenko
did
so well at nationals. He is a beautiful
gymnast whom I'd LOVE to see in
Atlanta, but rumor has it that he's on the
outs with Arkayev and, therefore,
his chances are slim. But perhaps (hopefully) his
performances will prompt
Arkayev to have a change of heart.

This is not
exactly true. Shelly did compete at
1992 USAs where she
placed, if memory serves me
correct, 20th in the all-around. As
for a
previous question of what other meets
besides Olympic Fest she was in,
she competed at
the 1991 Chunichi Cup in Japan.

I think you're right...Mihai
and Shelly were at SCATS together then, and
they
both had disappointing competitions (though I don't remember either
of their finishes).
Shelly would've been SCATS' hope to resume the
Olympic team
tradition, and Mihai would've been their first male
team
member.
That was it for Shelly, but Mihai is still
going strong.

I was compeeting
at the Europeans for the Swedish team. I will give you some
info about the competitions.
The highligt of the weekend was without doubt Podgornys floor routine. He
started with straight-straight-doubbel
front. In the training hall he did
tripple
back on the secound, that is 7 sommersaults
in two runs....amazing!
Sherbo is in great
form. He will now together with Ivan be a favorite for
the
olympic all around gold.
A
Ucrainian junior did in training in floor:
Handspring-straight front
full-straight-dubbel front! He did not stand properly so he took it away
for
the competition.
Kharkow
did a great high-bar routine with 7 release and catch elements.
A man
from spain did Kwast from one arm to one arm in HB.
A russian junior did Gaylord I
directly Kwast from undergrip.
His name was
Krukov.
Oleg Kuzmine took 5 gold medals in the junior competition and he
will be the
next russian
star ( I think ).
Sweden was nearly taking both the vault golds. In the junior competition
took
Mikael Hjort gold and in the senior comp. did Magnus Rosengren a
outstanding first vault (9.737) but missed his 2:nd vault
and finished at
6:th place.
If anyone has any question about any
details plaese let me know.
