trials questions
Sorry to be a bit gymnastics illiterate here, but
could someone explain to me
Amy Chow's new move on the bars. I can't
picture it.
Also, what did Moceanu change to
make her routine at 10.0 at trials when it
was out
of a 9.9 at Nationals.
And another also, is Borden definitely not
going to Worlds?
Thanks,
LeeAnn

Well, it certainly is a hard move to
picture and I don't think it's
any easier to
explain than a full-twisting Tkatchev, which I
couldn't
picture until I saw it. For the Jaegar
1/2, Kulikowski does a
straddled
Jaeger and then quickly inserts a half twist as she is
catching
the bar.

I haven't
been to Japan since I was a little boy.
I'm really
looking forward to the
trip. Hope to see ya there! We've
got
some catching up to do.
Well, I
finally wrote that team handbook I always said I would.
I'll bring a copy along for your light
reading enjoyment.
I have to say that I'm quite envious of your plan
for in-flight
entertainment. Sure as hell has my plan beat! I think several
good
books and a discman are called for.
To
answer a few of your questions, Kerry Adderly is
doing
great.
He will be at the regional ODP testing in Tallahassee
while we are in Japan.
John has done a super job preparing the
three
boys in regional testing(Kerry, Matt Clark, Kendall
Cleveland). Aaron is Aaron... like I said
before. The real
story lately is Mark Scheidegg. The boy is possessed... In a
good way! He is
really on fire lately. He's going
to even
have a strong Pommel horse set. Let me give you a brief
run-down on his new skills:
Floor -
Whip Double full (really nice)
Whip
double back
Front layout, Front Full
Pike
Double (very high)
P. horse
Connor travel to immediate russian on end
Tong
fei (very consistant in
combination)
pommel russian
stockli B
Rings Whippet
Cross
Vault
Handspring front
Kasamatsu
P.
bars Stutz hand (consistent)
back toss
diamidov (not consistent)
H. bar 1/2 higgins to eagles (every time)
gienger (very consistent)
Pike
double
Needless to say... the boy is on fire. He'll definitely be a
top contender this year... who'd a thought!?!
welp, gotta
run to the gym & squeeze in another two weeks worth
of
work into this week!
See ya soon!

Women's team...and men's too

When will
the US decide the status of who is competing for
them,
for both teams? I know the men are selecting one from
numbers
7 and 8, and the women are waiting on injuries.
And, for that matter,
any rumor/confirmations on who will be
competing
for Romania or Russia for the women?

Re: Moceanu's floor
I
believe that Dominique will be fine after puberty. Granted
some
athletes simply can't overcome the physical changes. There are some
athletes
like Shannon Miller who have adjusted well. One of the big
reasons
for this is the drive she has for gymnastics. Dominique has a
huge
drive also.

Eating disorders, and something else
Date sent: 16-SEP-1995 12:16:25
I was
discussing eating disorders with the women's swim coach at
my school last week, and he made a suggestion when I
mentioned we
were arguing that they should not
show weight which I thought was
pretty good. Why
don't we write to the networks and protest them
showing
this information? it might not do all that much good,
but
then again, it might. Email might work
too.
On the same note, I was watching a show on eating disorders a
few
years back, and when we were discussing african-american gymnasts
last
week, I was reminded of something. One of the athletes they
mentioned was someone who made the 1980 Olympic team, and
was black.
was that Luci
Collins?
Finally, I remember watching a broadcast way way WAY back when and
someone was attempting a triple turn on beam. She fell, and
did
not gt credit, even
though she did complete the skill. I'm just curious
if
this was Dana Dobransky, and whether it was the 1987
nationals.

Re: Moceanu
For
some reason I think that after the Olympics Moceanu
may stop
competing. During one of the interviews
on tv she said something
that
sounded like she would quit, but she'll only
be 14 at that point. Oh
well, I guess we'll have to wait and see what she
decides.

Re: Moceanu's floor/moceanu
Shannon
Miller was able to continue to compete past puberty because of the
style of her gymnastics. Her dance, which at every age has been
her strong
point, was only enhanced by
maturity. Granted, it was through
her drive as a
competetor
that she was able to continue her tumbling at a high level. Do
you
really think that Moceanu's cutesy style will still
work when she begins
to look like a woman? All I mean is that if, heaven forbid,
Dominique were
to hit puberty between now and the olympics, it could be the demise of her
gymnastics career, as it was Kristy Phillip's.

UKR men's team for Sabae
Here is the confirmed
list (as of today) of the Ukraine's men's team for
Worlds: Korobchinsky, Misyutin, Sharipov, Shamenko, Yermakov, Svetlichny and
Kosyak. :) They held an intrasquad
to determine the 7th gymnast, and Oleg
Kosyak
beat out Andrei Stepanchenko (and others?). Anyway,
unless they make any
changes in a week, when they
leave for Sabae, that is the team. Tidbits of
info: Korobchinsky is recovering
from a nearly broken finger. He hit it on
p-bars
doing a somi about 3 weeks ago. It wasn't actually
broken, but Oleg said
it turned completely blue
and Igor has only been able to do light workouts.
Misyutin
is supposedly only doing 3 events in compulsories (floor, rings and
vault) since, according to Oleg, he "doesn't know how
to do the other
routines." I find this a
little odd, but it's what Oleg said. Misyutin WILL do
all 6 in optionals,
but it seems to me that this 3-event compo thing
automatically
keeps him out of AA, doesn't it? Oleg said he didn't the rules...
I'm just
confused - why would UKR keep its best gymnast out of AA on purpose?
Well,
we'll see. I asked Oleg what he thought the team's chances were, and he
said he was worried about China. I reminded him that there'd
be compulsories
this time, unlike Dortmund, and
also told him that China is competing in the
first
round of the first session, while UKR drew the last round of the last
session. He hadn't known this, and was pretty excited and
said, "oh, well then
maybe we have a
chance!" It was very cute. But he's also worried about
Russia...
I asked him about the
UKR women's team, and he said he had absolutely no
idea
who's on it. Strange, but true.
He was very interested
in who'd be competing for the US. I told him the
men's
team, and said the women's team was up in the air because of injuries. He
specifically asked about Dominique Dawes, so I'm guessing
she must be his
favorite. He was sad to learn
about her injured wrist. I told him Shannon
should
be there, plus our new national champion, Dominique Moceanu.
He seemed
really interested in seeing her.
I think that's about
it. I'm SO glad he made the team, but am disappointed
about
this Misyutin situation. Hopefully Oleg made a
mistake...

NYTimes says Dawes out with injury
The New
York Times had an article this morning, with a picture of
Shannon Miller on
beam and a commentary on the relatively large
number
of "older" gymnasts from a variety of countries who were
expected to do well at Sabae --
and mentioned, in passing,
without any elaboration
on what had happened, that Dominique
Dawes was not going due to injury,
moving Theresa Kulikowski
(sp?) into the missing
spot.
Anybody know anything further?
