TV Alert
Hi! I'm back on
line. It didn't take as long as I
thought. To Jason in Kiev:
This
is my new e-mail address, in case you tried to reply.
I reported on the GA
v. FL collegiate meet this weekend.
On Thursday,
January 18, at 1:30 EST on ESPN is the show NCAA
Today. This show will
include a segment on the growth in popularity of women's
collegiate
gymnastics, including footage of the GA
v. FL meet.

Re: lefties, righties
Just to add my 2 cents to this little thing: I'm
right handed and a righty
(I start cartwheels, roundoffs,
etc. with my right foot in front).
I
guess this is what felt most natural to
me when I was first starting,
since I never really
thought about it, but I did learn how to do
cartwheels
(when I was about 5) from another girl, so I may have picked it
up from her. But
my right leg split has always been strongest (and that's
not
because I've worked on it more or anything), so I think
right-leggedness may have come naturally.
OK, now, when
I started learning full turns and split leaps on beam, my
coach just said go over and work on them. So I started doing both *on my
left leg* (I would have my left leg in front on my split
leap, and I would
turn on my left leg on my full
turn). As I learned the
compulsory
routines, I figured out that that was
wrong, and I was able to change
it. For a while it felt a little strange but
now it's totally natural.
When I twist, I twist left, on every event. I've tried twisting right,
but it just doesn't work.
As for the other people
on my team, well, it's kind of a mixed bag. We
have a
pretty equal mix of righties and lefties, but I think most people
are right-handed.
But some people do one thing on one leg and one thing
on another, and this is totally natural for them. Like one girl was a
lefty but she did back walkovers on her right leg. Which, of course,
gave
her lots of heartache in compulsories: she had to figure out how to
do her back walkover on her right leg in her level 6 beam
routine, then
almost immediately go into a left
leg split leap!
Hmm...make
that my 4 cents :)

left or right handedness
Dear All,
I
have always wondered whether I am a right or left-handed
person.
I write with my right hand, so I believe myself to be a
right-handed
person. In gymnastics, however, when I do a back handspring,
I use my right
leg to kick up and land on. When I do a cartwheel,
however,
I kick up and land on with my left leg. Is this normal for a
rightie? Just wondering!
Thanks!

When Patrick posts the collegiate digest, I made a
mistake on my report.
UM scored a 194.75 not 195.75. Sorry, the announcer made a mistake
posting them.

I totally agree. If she made
it into a real leap than O.k but what
is the point of jumping straight into the air and coming
down. It shows
that she doesn't have any control
on her landing which should result in
a
substantial deduction. Does anyone know if she gets any kind of
deduction for that?

Olympic Hopes
There have been many "predictions"/ hopes
posted about the American team,
and actual Olympic
medalists, how about some of the other teams?
RUSSIA: Khorkina, Kochetkova, Galiyeva (sp?), Grosheva, Fabrichnova (if
her
back isn't a problem), Prygunova,
and Lebedeva
ROMANIA: Milo, Gogean, Amanar, Cocovean, Hatagan, Presecan, Marineacu
USA:
Moceanu, Strug, Miller,
Borden, Phelps, Zmeskal, Powell or Dawes
Once
again injuries will be a major factor in the selection of the US team.
So
far the injury list looks like this:
Moceanu -Nothing
that I know of.
Strug- coming back from an Ankle injury
Miller- back from foot/ ankle problem
Borden- Toe and ankle
Phelps- Knee surgury
Zmeskal- Appears to be doing well
after knee surgury
Powell- Knee, ankle?
Dawes- Ankles, wrists- she looked well at R&R
I'm not even going to touch the actual Olympics, I had enough trouble with
the
teams. Too many choices, and
variables to even be close.

1-13-96
Blue/Gold Invitational
Ann
Arbor Mi
Teams competing:
University of Michigan
University of Pittsburgh
West Virginia University
We had an excellent crowd tonight, as
fans came to see our UM Women's
Gymnastics team's first
meet of the new season.
Ranked 3rd
in the country, UM was looking
for a great start to the promising season
and they
did just that.
Pre-Meet Notes: Autumn Donati,
Lauren LaBranche, and Kristin Duff sat out
this meet with injuries. Autumn has a broken
toe, Lauren has a sore
back,
and I believe Kristin sprained her left arm (it was in a sling-no
cast). In
pre-meet published reports, Coach Plocki said that
she was
looking towards her freshmen Beth Amelkovich, Lisa Simes, and Nikki
Peters
especially to have a strong showing tonight. Beth, injured at the
intrasquad meet, looked nervous in
her first collegiate meet, as had
Kathy Burke and Kristin Duff at the last
meet. Kathy Burke only
performed on the floor, as an exhibition performer.
Instead
of the freshmen dominating for UM, it was the returners Wendy
Marshall,
Dianna Ranelli, Andrea McDonald, and Heather Kabnick.
Their
consistent routines secured a strong
victory over the other two teams.
Coach Plocki
was hoping to improve on their 189.65 record last year
at
this same meet. The team easily surpassed this with an
impressive
194.75. West
Virginia performed well for a 190.825.
The University of
Pittsburgh had a difficult meet with a
187.275.
Note: Sorry to
everyone that was anticipating a lot of notes on the
routines
and on West Virginia and Pitt. Our
arena is pretty small, and
with the number of
gymnasts on the floor, it became quite difficult to
write
the scores down with three gymnasts competing at once, let alone
the announcer not announcing the visiting gymnasts names as
they began
their routines. Thus I only have partial scores. Sorry.

These are the results from the
preliminaries. There were 3 nice suprises at
this meet -- Chris
LaMorte with his rings routine (9.9 in finals), Mark Sohn
on Pommel's (9.8 in
prelims and 9.35 in finals this is one of the 3 times he
has
ever come off the horse during a meet -- couldn't get the handstand into
pirouette), then Bill Roth competed 4 events and made finals
on all 4, with
a 9.9 on High Bar. I will try to pull together the results
from the finals
by the end of tonight.

Kim Zmeskal
In the recent messages regarding
Olympic predictions, several people have
predicted
Kim Zmeskal winning several individual medals,
including the
all-around gold. I think that is very unrealistic. I am a huge Zmeskal
fan, but Kim will be 20 years old, making a comeback to
amateur competition
for the first time since the
1992 Olympics. We have not yet seen
any of her
routines with the exception of floor
exercise. In addition, she is
making a
comeback from reconstructive knee
surgery, which, is no small feat.
If Kim
succeeds in making the Olympic team,
it will be an amazing, almost
unbelievable
accomplishment. We don't need to
burden her with unfair
expectations of all-around
medals.

TWISTING...
Since we are all on the subject, anyone ever seen people
twist a skill
in both directions during the
execution of the skill? Example:
Double Double, first somi to left,
secodn to right (the twist, that is!),
or a double full with the first twist one way, the second
the opposite.
I think that that would be rather neat to see!!
Jeff
P.S.
Okay, these seemingly useless-because-it-is-too-early-to-call-it
Olympic
Predictions, I only have to predict for Puerto Rico and say that
Russia
will have cleaned up its act from Sabae and will come
home with the
most medals (M, W, and both) and
should head into Atlanta with a slight
lead
against the Chinese (M and W) in the Team. AA could go to a gymnast
outside the top three nations. ANd
I'm not sure that the USA will even medal
right
now. I am thinking about this Russian W team and thinking back to
SAbae, they, like China, have everything but consistency.
Plus, being
bested by Team USA two years in a row
will make them work extra hard to best
USA on team USA's
home turf.
AA and team = OLYMPICS, not Worlds this
year.

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 15 Jan 1996 to 16 Jan 1996
Just a couple ?s, comments.
I'm a rightie handwise,
but I start
with my left hand for cartwheels. Which leg should I stand on,
leave off of, etc for leaps, back
walk-overs, front walk-overs,
etc.....
How
many members are there on this LIST-SERV
?
I was reading old
digests, and it mentioned surveys....
I
thought it would be cool to start a
survey with questions like:
Most nice in interviews
Shyest
Most
improvement in a year
Best All-time gymnast
etc.....
I'd love to help out, but I don't
know if I can handle results
of ANOTHER
survey... Any
interest out there?
I kinda
invented a new type of cartwheel which I can
describe.
I'd like to see if anyone can do it, especially on beam, and
what you think it would be rated in the code... If it's
good
I could send it to some gymnasts to see i
(if) they'd want to use it for something (traininf,
etc.)
Gordon Estes has the bruises to prove how difficult it is
:-)
;-) ;-)

American Uni`s and Flexibility
Hello,
Firstly
I would like to know how a British gymnast would go about getting
a place/scholarship at an American University. What kind of
subjects can
be studied to do with sport, coaching etc..? How much training do they do,
what is the standard like? Also when does the educational
year start in
America (in September like in Britain)?
Anyway all information or
comments would be greatly
received!
Secondly, Would any gymnasts or coaches with gymnasts like
to
participate in a flexibility project I am
doing. It consist of two simple
test which are
then repeated three weeks later. In those three weeks the
gymnasts do PNF stretching at a certain time during
training. The project
when finished should show
when the best time to do
flexibility training
is in order to get the most
benefits. Please help!!! if you can mail me.
Anyone
who replied before, details will follow shortly.

Intro
Well after hanging around for months and wanting to say lots,
here it is! I
am a 15 year old Sophomore. I competed 3 years of Level 5, 2 of
Level 6, and
1 season of Level 7. I have started teaching a Tot/Kingergym class off and
on at
my gym also. I am going to become a
judge next year when I'm old
enough. I now compete in a new program that is
pretty much the High
Schoolers who don't want to
work hard, and have minor injuries but love the
sport
and want to compete. It is a
mixture of H.S, Levels 5, 6, & 7, and
optional
w/out having to compete all-around.
I think it's great.
Less
practice hours plus optionals equals more fun! I'm a right handed and a
righty, but twist leftie, and love to give my .02! I'm also an OSU fan!!
I've been to Gymn
camp there the last two summers and it was awesome!
Anybody know who's planning on coming to
the Reese's Cup in Portland, OR?
I
have tickets.............
Andrea
