Bican not competing
The word is that Bican is not competing, but had to go home - she has a torn
ACL. I don't know how it happened,
I do know it happened a couple of days
ago. The coaches did call their federation
for them to send over their
number
8 gymnast - not sure who.

Hi,

There is no judging - it is
exactly what it sounds like -- training.
The
athletes come in, get up and practice
their routines to get used to being on
a podium,
the feel of the equipment. The
judges are required to be there to
just get an
idea of what some of the moves look like, what might be new,
condition of athletes, etc.
I have to go to work,
and will try to write more later.

Calling all adult gymnasts!
Before we all get further engrossed in the
coming Games, I wanted to
take a moment to post
this general call to anyone who participates
in an
adult gymnastics program, or who knows about a gym that offers a
program for adults.
Every so often, GYMN gets
questions regarding adult gymnastics
classes. Since such classes are few and far
between, I'm going to
compile and maintain a list
of adult classes which are known to GYMN's
members. Obviously, such a list won't be all-encompassing, and it
probably
will be very small, but it will provide a start for people
looking to get into gymnastics as an adult, or even for
former
gymnasts who would like to find a place to work
out.
The information we'll need is the gym name, address, and phone
number,
and contact/coach, if available. We're looking for gyms
which offer
adult classes, will teach
adults in private lessons, or will allow
adult,
former gymnasts to work out on the premises. Basically, if a
gym
does anything with adults, then we'll include them in the
list. Also, this
list should not be limited to the US -- international
members
should contribute relevant info as well.
The success of such a list
depends on the input of GYMN's members.
So
please take a moment out if you have any
info to contribute, and send
it directly to my
e-mail at mperenson@mcimail.com. DO
NOT SEND IT TO
THE LIST; the list is busy enough with the Olympics getting
under way.
After the games, I'll post an update on the progress of this
project.
Thanks,
Melissa

don't change the clocks and I expected that

is the same here between us and Boston).
Will they do this with the

Suggestions of WWW sites...
I am a fairly recent subscriber to this
list and have found it to be very
useful and
informative.
I am currently working for the Sport Information Resource
Centre (SIRC)
in Ottawa, Canada. SIRC have just launched a new World Wide
Web site
called SPORTQuest
(http://www.SPORTQuest.com). Its
aim is to provide
quality assessment and retrieval
guidance for sport information on the
World Wide Web. The information is aimed at athletes and
coaches,
students, professors, sports medicine
specialists as well as general
sport
enthusiasts.
My question from this list is for recommendation of sites
on the Web that
you find useful and informative
and that would be a valuable addition to
our
site.
I thank you for any assistance you can offer in this matter and
look
forward to hearing from you.

News and tidbits from the NY Times
Pae Gil
Su is one of the 24 athletes on the North Korean Olympic team,
which arrived at the Olympic Village yesterday.
For
the first time ever, paying spectators were allowed to watched the
Olympic training sessions. Over 9000 were there to watch the
men
train compulsories yesterday. The advance sale for the women's
compulsory training (which is today) was 21700; for the
men's
optional training (tomorrow) is 11500; and
for the women's
optional training (Thursday),
30000. Ticket prices ranged
from
$11 to $22.
Chainey Umphrey was the only American man the reporter (George Vecsey,
one of the Times'
regular sports columnists) noticed waving
to the
crowd. Jair
Lynch approved of the idea, saying that
it not
only gave (more) people a chance to "have an Olympic
experience," but that it helped the athletes by
reminding them
that they are their representing
their country. John
Roethlisberger
had a bad time on p-bars, and
plucked one of the bars like a
guitar string. Because there were no programs or
announcers,
some of the competitors (e.g., Scherbo) apparently went
unrecognized
by the crowd.
So if it's something they sell tickets to, why isn't
this on TV :-)?
BTW, if you're one of the lucky folks attending the
Olympics,
be advised that the concessionaires were
charging $2.50 a cup
for *tap water*. BYO(water)B
sounds like a good option here!
Trivia: I hadn't known that Yuri Chechi was named for Yuri Gagarin,
but
everyone else probably did. (At any
rate, you do now.)

Well, how interesting. Suppose a similar comment
was made about the
women, or that they actually
came out and performed in say two piece
outfits.
We penalize the women if their leo's
are cut too high and
praise the men for doing
exhibitions shirtless.... Interesting bit of a

More interesting still that the men pander to it. Says

NBC plans Olympic coverage for women
Today, I read in the York,
Pennsylvania newspaper that NBC is planning on
doing
more "fluff pieces" than actual competition for WOMEN'S sports.
This
made me want to
just throw up. The
Olympics ISN'T about the
little pieces that clog
the competition. What gets me is
that they are
actually willing to sacrifice major
competition time doing these things.
The article was VERY stereotypical in
stating: "What NBC
discovered
is that the typical female Olympics
viewer wants more "ER" than ESPN.
That means NBC will in effect
serialize and almost soap opera-ize it's
WOMEN'S olympic coverage by feeding in more
than 140 pre-packaged short
profiles of Olympic
athletes."
They also stated that
they will have timely
interviews with Greg Louganis, and other
past-Olympians...which,
don't get me wrong here, I think it would be
great
to do, but NOT DURING THE PRECIOUS 1996 OLYMPIC COVERAGE TIME.
They should
play these interviews before or after the competitions!!! I
just
thought I would pass out when I read this quote from Katie Couric:
"stories of personal triumph and stories that bridge cultural
gaps are the types
of programs that have female-appeal" EXCUSE ME? Thanks for
putting words into my mouth, Katie! I want to watch the personal
triumph for MYSELF...I don't need a story-teller to
INTERPRET it for me.
Oh,
there's also a behind-the-scenes pregames special,
"A Prelude to the
Games" at 9 PM on Wed, which, on a good note,
sounds pretty decent.
After all of the stereo-typical comments about women
and sports by president of
NBC
sports' Dick Ebersol; he ends with THIS comment
<gritting my
teeth> "We've found that
men will basically sit through anything to get
to
the result." Kinney
Littlefield also adds, "Oh, and don't worry, all
you
NBA and NFL-addicted jocks out there.
NBC plans plenty of facts,
figures and
who's thrashing whom..." I'd
say this article and idea is
pretty sad and sick,
and I certainly hope the coverage is not what it
sounds
like it is going to be.

Romanian team
I guess someone in Atlanta can confirm this, but I think the Romanian
team
originally consisted of Milosovici,
Gogean, Amanar, Marinescu, Bican, Lioas
(I'm sure that's spelled wrong!) and Tugurlan. I would assume that Tugurlan
will now replace Bican.
Question for anyone in
Atlanta who has been at training: Is the 7th
Russian girl
Dolgopolova? I am guessing so, if Fabrichnova is not there. And
who
finally made the Russian men's team? I only know that Nemov,
Voropayev and
Kharkov are
there, but who are the other four? I hope Podgorny's among them!

More About Bican
Reuters reports today that Bican tore ligaments in her right knee while
training in V on Saturday, and that she will undergo surgery
in Atlanta
on Monday.
ROM coach Octavian Belu says that "there is not enough time to fly in
an
alternate and get her acclimated" so ROM
will have to use their 6 remaining
gymnasts on all
events. About Bican's
injury, Belu said, "The team was
upset but, they say, 'that's life.'"
The
article also mentions that Gogean missed only 12 days

The olympic podium
training
I have tickets to the olympic
podium training on July 15 (men's comp) and
July 18 (women's optionals). This means that I have already been to one
of
the sessions, since it is Tuesday night.
I
must say that the dome looked AWESOME. The competition area was done in
olympic green. I can only say, you
had to be there. From looking at all of
the
beautiful light green carpet, "wall to wall" on the floor, to
watching
the athletes march from each apparatus
led by an ACOG volunteer holding sign
telling the
country of the athletes, to the triumphant music during the
marching, etc., watching the whole thing was
breathtaking.
When I first walked into the GA Dome and saw the
competition area, I was in
awe. I can see why
Dominique Moceanu would risk breaking her leg to
get
here. Hey, after seeing the incredible job
ACOG did putting together the
whole setup, hey I
might risk breaking my leg too. I am warning you know,
if
you have a VCR, GET IT READY NOW. Otherwise you
will miss probably, the best
olympic
gymnastics competition in recent memory, perhaps ever. Even better
tham Nadia's perfect 10's in
Montreal (that was in a different era of
gymnastics,
cannot be compared to gymnastics now), or Mary Lou's gold AA in
Los Angeles
(it was in LA, in a boycotted olympics).
The
US women's team is going to steal the show in the dome. And to all you
Dom
M. naysayers out there, prepare your self mentally for this- Dom will
win gold in the dome. YES- GOLD!!!!!! You may not believe me
know, but I
know. Even if she, by some chance,
doesn't win an olympic gold
medal in
competition, she will win one from
Madison Avenue. Besides, nowadays with
these
professional athletes, which medal is more important, olympic
gold, or
gold gold?
Dominique Moceanu already gets around $100,000 a year
in training
stipends ($15,000 from USA
gymnastics), corporate sponsorships, advertising,
etc.
And after the olympics, if
she wins a gold medal, she will get $105,000
from particpating in a post-olympic
exhibition tour. Plus the globs from big
name
companies like Coca-Cola, Nike, etc.
This girl is another Mary Lou Retton. And the olympics
haven't even started
yet. I can see how she would
be pressured in competing with a stress
fracture
and other pain. Hey for what she is getting, I would "choose to do
it", too. $$$$, $$$$$, and
more $$$$$!!!!
I think you Dom haters are just jealous. Oh, and spare me
the talk about
"her gymnastics......"
This whole thing isn't about flips and spins. It's
about
money, plain and simple. Money for
her and her parents, money and
prestige for Bela Karolyi and USA gymnastics,
money for NBC, USA Today,
TIME, Sports Illustrated, and
all the other media outlets. And positive
exposure
for gymnastics in general. You people cried and whined over "Little
girls". The postitive and
glowing media coverage and profiles of Dom have
made
everybody forget (those few who MIGHT have cared, forgot anyway) about
that book. Most people didn't care about it anyway. You
should be glad Dom
is in all the papers and on TV,
etc.
NEWSFLASH FROM ATLANTA- Atlanta is jammed packed. Unless you are
here for
the gymnastics competition :), go home.
The MARTA system is overloaded.
There is NO place to park. All of MARTA
23,000 parking spaces at ALL of it's
stations systemwide, are full by 6 am!!!!!! I had to park about 5
miles from
the last station on the south line and
catch a bus to the station, since
there was no
place to park. The trains are worst than Japan during rush
hour. It is unreal. The crush of people is unbelievable. And
the olympics
haven't even started yet.
I will try to keep you guys
updated on what's going on down here in the
olympic city.
