Ok, people here always like to put Chinese
down.
But we all know that americans
as well as other europeans also use drugs.
Why is
it a big deal to single Chinese out?
Is that because you are all jeasous of what the Chinese are achieving
now???
shame on you!

Re: American Anthem?
There are a few other things I can recall that
were decent.
1) a combination
biography/documentary on Ummm....I think it
is carol JOhnson? She competed
with only one arm, and was an
NCAA champion I believe, before knee injury
forced her out
of the sport.
2) A short
movie (I think it was on HBO), like an ABC afterschool
special
about this gymnast trying to fit in at a new club.

Re: Chinese don't use steroids!
Actually, I happen to like Chinese
gymnasts. I think they do
somethings
extremely well.
However, as far as their swimming goes, I believe they
have a
sophisticated drug use system that mirrors
the East German use
back in the 70's and 80's (an
opinion echoed by many others,
including experts)
and they can get past some of the detection
by
careful usage. I think it ruins the sport.
Now, just to be an
equal-opportunity basher, the US has has two
high-profile
cases (Jessica Foschi
recently and Angel Martino in 1988). Justice
has
been served.
I also believe the Chinese system leaves a lot to be
desired in
terms of training. People rip on Bela Karolyi for his
"abuses" of
his athletes, but the
Chinese system, both from what we saw last
night,
and from an extensive peek into it back in 1988, makes me
shudder.
So, I guess this isn't a rip against the Chnese, just because I
am
jealous. It is from a human being who feels the system is not good.

I would think that it would be ok for

Perhaps the leos help with not sticking to the bar?

There is
currently a disagreement in my family about which Olympic coverage
to tape, NBC or CBC.
I'd like to hear responses from
everyone, especially Canadians, about which
you
think will have better gymnastics coverage and why.
Thanks!!

Hi, I am taping
both, but for watching I am sticking with CBC. I hate to
bring
up anothr point of liking or disliking the you-know-whos of NBC's
brodcasting
but that's one reason why. I'm not choosing CBC over NBC b/c
I don't want
to listen to Tesh...but rather that anything those
three say
will probably be the same repetitive
stuff and basic info I already know.
Second I am a Canadain
and as such am interested in my country's coverage
and
athletes. We're not the best in the gymn front, but I
still like our
gymnasts. I look
forward to watching Kris Burley, maybe I am partial
because he trained at the gym here or something. (I live in
Halifax,
Burley is from Truro about an hour by car away - here is Nova
Scotia).
Hmmm, I also think CBC will show a better variety of countries.
NBC tends
to show the American gymnasts, of
course, and I've been seeing a LOT of
them
(Nationals, Trials...) and not a lot of anybody else (simply b/c I
missed Euros). And I am sticking with CBC b/c their timing
is better.
While CBC will be showing the Olympics Saturday for eight hours
straight,
NBC has Saved By The Bell and Herbie
Rides Again lined up. - Lisa

Gymnastics in San Fran. press
Well, the San
Francisco papers have had quite a bit to say about gymnastics
over the past 24 hours.
In yesterday's Examiner, Gwen Knapp wondered how so
many men (especially John Tesh)
managed to get jobs announcing an Olympics
that is
watched in the U.S. mostly (51%) by women.
The article says that
only 11 of the 51
commentator and reporters for NBC are women. For you
non-Americans,
it does give a little background on Tesh. (Although
it
doesn't mention his propensity to use the
phrase "and what of..." in *all*
of the
intros and fluff pieces he does.
Does anyone else use this phrase,
ever?)
Unfortunately, it also had a column of twenty questions which
includes which
sports should be dropped and
added. Showing no creativity, the
writer (John
Crumpacker) lists synchro swimming and rhythmic gymnastics as sports to
drop. On the
other hand, I haven't heard anyone else suggest that
tug-of-war(!)
be added.
There is also a column by everyone's favorite
"journalist," Joan Ryan,
previewing
women's gymnastics. It's actually better than one might expect.
She says:
"In the midst of weathering pointed criticism about the injuries
and eating disorders gymnasts endure to become the best in
the world at such
young ages, the gymnastics
community has welcomed the shift toward older
gymnasts." Of course, that doesn't mean that she
won't jump on the media
bandwagon and spend half
of her column discussing Dominique Moceanu.
Also
of interest is a feature on Jessica Davis that was done on June 16th.

of these articles can be found at:

I thought that about the 1984 leos also they do look alot
like that, and they
also make the gymnasts look

I just started watching The "Prelude to the games and I had to comment.
Women's gym was the first sport featured.
They profiled Dominique Moceanu
and Shannon
Miller. What bugged me was they introduced them as America's
"Top 2"
gymnasts. WHAT ABOUT JAYCIE PHELPS!?! Jaycie is currently ranked
second in the
country. That would make Jaycie and Shannon the top
two, and
Moceanu
third. For once I would like to see one of the other gymnasts get
some
coverage.
Just my
thoughts!!

I know I am feeling the
same way! Why don't they ever show Kerri, Amanda or
Jaycie?
They have tried the hardest and we already know Shannon and Dom's

she is actually the
greatest thing and is the only
team leader(DOM) and she is forgetting about
the
veterans, I am so sick of this media hype!
Go KERRI and AMANDA!

I
have an idea. To prevent any
individual from having to make
a number of copies, I think we should collect the following
data
from
each person, and then co-ordinate trades.
1.
I will be taping the following:
As much as I can get my mom to and what
ever we have room for on 5 tapes
2.
I am interested in the following:
Whatever sessions i
don't have taped (I will be at Camp in Minnesota)
I am not sure of what
yet, probably the daytime stuff.
3.
I will be able to make copies of my tape. (Yes/No)
I don't know, probably no because my mom
isn't in to that
Please
include your e-mail address and your regular address.
Ideally, we could co-ordinate it so that
each person will
only need to make one or two copies of their tape.
CTGG1417@aol.com, if any one wants my
mailing address they can E-mail
privately to make
plans to swap.
To anyone we

we will count
you in.
Anyone who has

Different countries' video formats
Just for the record, and a bit
simplified:
North America, much of Central and South America, Japan,
South Korea,
Taiwan, and the Philipines use the
NTSC standard for broadcasting. The
usual
VCRs you buy in the US can record and play back only in this
standard.
(This has nothing to do with VHS or Beta, which are _tape_
formats.)
France, some of Africa, much of the Middle East, and some of
Eastern Europe
uses the SECAM standard. Russia is currently switching over from
SECAM to PAL.
The PAL standard is used by other
countries, notably Australia, New Zealand,
Hong
Kong, the U.K., and western continental Europe (excluding France).
If
you want to trade tapes with folks whose countries use a different
standard than yours, either you or the folks you trade with
have to have to be
able to create and/or view
tapes in more than one standard.
The FIG,
for example, sells some of its
tapes in all three standard.
Multi-standard
VCRs and standalone converters are probably more
prevalent outside the US
than inside it, but you
can purchase such equipment for $500-$2500, depending on
what
all the equipment can do. (If I
even broached the idea of bringing
another VCR of
_any_ type into the house, I would probably be defenestrated,
but this info may be of use to someone else :-).)
The
alternative is that you use a conversion service to create
NTSC tapes from
the PAL or SECAM tapes your trading friend sends you.
This can be pretty
expensive, especially if you do a lot of it.
For gory details about
hardware, you can point your Web browser at
http://www.best.com/~jdulaney/pal.html
or e-mail for an FAQ or catalog to jdulaney@best.com. (This is not an
endorsement,
as I've never done business with these folks, but simply
a
pointer to information about what type of equipment is currently
available.)

I think for the Chinese women's gymnastics it
is obvious that they are
not taking drugs to make
them stronger unless there are some drugs that
don't
make them look huge. Some of the
swimmers are really big and it
looks
suspicious. I think it would be unfair
if all the Chinese athletes

Re: international video swaps
I have moved around a lot and it is very
true that not all systems are
compatible. There are a couple ways to get around
the problem. One is
to have the tapes converted, but to my knowledge things that
caan be
legally
converted are home video's and the like.
Basically you can have
little Susy's Birthday party coverted
for you mother in England, but not
something you
taped off the television. A second
option in a multisystem
tv. I don't know about the availability
around the world, but they are
exceptionally
common in Japan and also Hong Kong, Singapore and other
Asian
shopping havens. My family
owns one and they are certainly worth
it. We purchased ours while living in
Japan. A third way is to have
a
vcr and television
from another country. When we lived in Australia we
took
our vcr and television from Canada and hooked it up
to a
transformer. I could not watch TV, but could watch
the American videos I
had brought with me. This was also an very common thing with
the
internationaal
community in Switzerland.
To break it down into who can watch what I
know the following.
All of North America (Canada, Mexico, USA) can
freely watch video from
each other's
countries.
Australia and most of Europe (I know Australia and
Switzerland) are
compatable.
Japan
works with North America
I believe Hong Kong and quite a lot of Asian
countries are with the
Europeans.
>From personal experience I
have popped a swiss tape into an Australian
VCR
and it works.
I have watched American and Canadian videos on a
Japanese vcr.VCR
I
have watched Japanese videos on a Canadian and US vcr.
I hope this helps!
