Endo... in the roughest and most unjust

possible, it's a straddled swing around the bar that opens
to a handstand.
So Chow does (if I remember right, memory is a bit
fuzzy so someone please feel free to correct) an Endo,
full
pirrouette,
immediate drop into another Endo.

change to make her routine at 10.0 at trials when it

out of a 9.9 at Nationals.

Last
I heard, she was at Dynamo.
She's had various injuries from bone
chip
in elbow (??) to something with her foot (don't remember what,
but I have a distinct memory of her limping) to who
knows.

No,
Dawes was not fine at Trials, nor at Nationals. At USA Nationals
she
commented that she had not been doing her usual workout schedule
because of wrist problems. (And ironically, she won bars, the
hardest
event for her wrist, at Nationals.) I am not sure exactly what is
wrong with her wrist, but I do know that Coach Hill was
talking about
how it needed to be in a cast.
Her
performances at Trials were "fine" but she was competing still
with that wrist injury.
Apparently the injury is serious enough that
the
rigorous training schedule up till and including Japan was not a
wise decision for her to make.

This is a
message from Sarah (_Gym Stars_ Editor) regarding Mary
Lou Retton:

At the risk of upsetting many
gym fans, and Retton fans, in
America, I thought
I would put across the British point of view
about
Mary Lou. I remember watching the Los Angeles Olympics with
my friends and all of us found her demeanour
very embarrassing.
We cringed every time she grinned and punched the air.
In Britain
we respect modesty, and Mary Lou was
not modest. Nor do we think
of her as
"cute" or "bubbly". She was as subtle as a
sledgehammer!
I don't want to detract from her achievements, or what she
has
done for gymnastics in America, which is
fantastic and much needed
at the time. However she
had very little impact in Europe. If she
had been
British I would quietly side-step the issue whenever her
name
was raised. Of course I seriously doubt any British gymnast
would behave like she did when she "won the
Olympics". Just my
2 cents worth!

If I remember right,
Kristy Phillips left Bela to go to another
coach,
She
was doing great while she was with Bela but she did
not have to
work as hard on the new gym and lost her shape. When she decided
to go
back to Bela, she started to get
better again but it was too late for
the
Olympics. After that she retired.
The biggest difference
I see between Kristy Phillips and Dominique
Moceanu
is that Dominique's parents are friends of Bela and
will not
be taking her away. Like it or not, Bela
produces champions!

I
remember reading in IG that at the Visa Challenge Dominique Moceanu
was so
excited to hit her second toumbling run that she jumped for joy at the end.
The audience seemed to think it was
really cute, so maybe Bela decided to
have her do it everytime.
Also,
I think the comparison between Moceanu and Kristy
Phillips is very
interesting. I personally don't think Moceanu will last past puberty, and I
think what happened to Kristy could very well happen to
Dominique.

Eating disorders
I heard a rumor this weekend that really upset
me.
Since this was a rumor, I will give no particulars.
The rumor
involved a coach "teaching girls how to
purge." I guess I was under the impression
that
this kind of stuff was no longer happening in
the
enlightened times of the '90s. But this was alleged
to have happened in the last couple of years.
I think
that any coach doing this should
be banned from
contact with minors. It
reminded
me that parents have to be *very* careful
who they
trust to influence their children.
Sorry
to bring up bad subjects, but as long as it
is out
there, we parents have to be on the look out.

I was discussing Little Girls In Pretty
Boxes with a journalism professor
here
and he wants to use it in a journalism class as an example
of what happens
when well-meaning journalists with
a potentially good topic overstep the
bounds of
good journalistic practice and thus undercut their subject matter
and their own credibility. I'm supposed to give him a few examples
of
obvious inaccuracies or leaps in logic (ie. the statement about Michelle
Kwan that opens the
Epilogue and that I've already objected to on the list)
to
discuss in class. So, does anyone
have any particularly favorite
egregious examples
to share? They can be from skating
or gymnastics. Oh,
and
unless you feel they'd be
of particular interest to the list, respond to
me
personally at ***@inst.augie.edu.

I have a parent who has a
daughter that is pretty good and will probably go
far. But unfortunately the parents are not
that well off financially. Is
there somewhere they can get financial aid for training and
not effect her
amateur status? Also what are the requirements of
keeping an amateur status?

Yes. During a T.V. feature at the '88 Olympic
Trials, it was mentioned that
Luci had struggled
with an eating disorder.

This was Juliet Bangater (spelling?) of Desert Devils and she attempted
the
triple turn on beam during the event finals of
the 1987 Olympic Festival. I
attended this competition and even though she overrotated it and fell, it was
quite
impressive to see! She also performed one on FX during that meet. It
seems so
long ago!

TV Alert (for USA)
For those of you who get "Prime Ticket
Sports" on your cable outlet they are
re-showing
the '95 USAIGC Championships (held in Haines, FL) twice this week.
Check
your local listings for times and stations. Here in California it will
be on at 1 PM on Monday the 18th and at 2 *AM* on Thursday
the 21st.
The Monday show is listed as 2.5 hours and the Thursday show
at 1.5 hours.
Not sure which is correct or if Thursday will be an edited
version.

I'm confused about the procedures used to pick the coaches
for
international competition. I thought I read on the gymn page on the web
that the
men's Olympic coach was already picked, and yet the women's
world coach is still unsure. If it were to be Karolyi
and Nunno (each
with
only one athlete, granted that they are the top two), what rationale
would be behind the exclusion of Forster (with three
athletes, if Dawes
withdraws)? Also, do the athletes get any say in who
is chosen? If a
vote is used, is it by the coaches of the team members or by
USA
gymnastics officials?

Tanya was still at Aerials. She quit a short time after
the US Classic, after
she hurt her foot in
training. As of now, I don't have a reason for her
quitting,
but I should soon.

Dawes' stress fracture in her wrist must be
bothering her quite a bit. That's
the only reason
I was given for her absence.

rumors---
Theresa Kulikowski is officialy "in" Congrats to her for one of her
most
consistant meets of
the year.
---This moved Mary
Beth Arnold into Alternate, and Andree Pickens and Monica
Flammer into the 2nd and 3rd alternate spots------
Rumor
has it that Mary Beth Arnold *may* and I stress MAY resign, due to some
reasons I don't know as of now. That would make Pickens
alternate, and
Flammer 2nd alternate.
If
