I received the following from USA Gymnastics:

I have been trying very hard to get additional rooms in our already
extablished blocks of rooms. I have not been able to do this.

So, I have contacted other hotels which are within walking distance to the
Hynes. So far I have this information that can be given out to callers.

OK, I don't know anything about Boston, but all of these hotels
should be within walking distance of the Hynes Center. In
addition, they should all be cheaper than any I have seen listed
so far. I have not checked availability of any of them, I leave
that as an exercise for the reader. I would also recommend
double checking on the location.

Boston has a great subways system. I guess that the HOtel MUST be on it,
since if must be part of the convention center in the City. If you
can locate a map of the city and subway, you'll be able to locate a
hotel on the subway which will get you there. I suggest you get what you
can off the WWW about Boston. I am sure that there MUST be a page about
the city and hotels and maps.

When the new code and rules come out for 1997 it will no longer be possible
to skip level 7. It is becoming a modified optional level. Levels 5 and 6
will still be compulsory levels and 7 will be a novice or prep type optional
level with certain required skills or skill families on each event. So, fall
of 1996 will be the last chance for level 6's to score up to level 8 without
going through 7. If you want to know more about what will be required for the
new level 7 I'd be glad to tell you what I know at this point.

Someone (sorry, i forgot who!!) mentioned that the USGF is planning on not
letting gymnasts skip level 7 anymore. Is this true? The gym I go to was
small, and there was really no need for level 7. If you get a good enough aa
score in level 6, why shouldn't you be allowed to move straight to 8??

Subject: Worlds: More UB Finalist Changes

Yesterday's uneven bars semi-finals were incorrectly judged as
Competition III instead of Competition II (even though the judges were
all sitting around watching girls vault 2 same vaults before they
came to bars %)). Video review confirmed that some start values needed
adjustment.

Henceforth, there are now ELEVEN girls competing on bars today.
Italy's Ilenia Meneghesso was added to the list.

Somebody just yelled "Press Conference!". Gotta go.

What a mess. The addition of Ilenia Meneghesso (ITA) to the UB finals
is wrong. She didn't even qualify for semi-finals. The name on the
working order is wrong - it should be Anna Mirgorodskaya of UKR.

World Championships 1996

San Juan, Puerto Rico April, 1996.

It is that time of the year again and I'm gonna try to do live
commentary like for Sabae Worlds :) the info below is what I see
from TV (thanks to DSF who are braodcasting this live) and therefore
the info may not be correct especially since I don't know German
and do not understand what the commentator is saying... I'm sure
those who are there at San Juan will be able to provide more
accurate information. Please excuse any spelling errors I try to
type as fast as I can during this live report, and also trying to
operate two VCRs at the same time...

Event Finals (Day One) (Part One)
======================

The TV programme starts as Grigori Misutin of Ukraine is already
performing his floor exercise. Misutin is definately one of the
tips for the medal and he scored 9.625 to set the pace.

Ivan Ivanov of Bulgaria is next (the commentator is again emphasising
that this Ivanov is not the same as Ivankov of Belarus...). He put
his hands down on the last pass and would have thought that would
put him out of a medal... 9.450.

Thierry Aymes of France doesn't start well with a foot (or maybe
both feet) stepping out of the floor mat for his first full-twisting
double layout pass... It was just one foot out, looking at the
replay... 9.525.

Sergei Fedorchenko of Kazakstan is next. Very tall lad he is, or so
it seems. Quite solid throughout. 9.562 and second place in the half
way stage.

Alexei Voropaev of Russia. Good high full twisting double layout to
start. This guy is fast.... having said that he's slowed the routine
down... :) finishes with what looks like a double twisting double
back... can he take the lead... oh yes indeedy 9.700.

Ivan Ivankov of Belarus. He's had a dissappointing 1995 and looking
to put things right in this Olympic year. Arghhh a little stumble
right at the end of his landing of the last tumbling pass... only
9.550.

Evgeni Podgorni of Russia... the young lad is performing some good
tricks but is not very steady on them... hands and knees all down
in performing a triple back. But good on him for trying! 9.125 and
probably will finish last.

Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus is last up. Hmmmm looks good with quick
movements of hands and feet. No problems so far with just the
last tumbling to go, and a stuck double layout! Can probably take
the gold, the crowd definately think so with their cheers! The
score... is...... 9.787! Yes it's gold for Scherbo yet again!

I just read on the USA Gymnastics homepage that the event finals for women
will be using competition III rules. What does that mean?

Will the finalists be starting each event with a clean slate or will the
final round of scores be averaged with the semi-final round?

Mens floor medals ceremony still going on... again the usual
"finding where the flag is going to be raised" confusion as
the lads look around for it... they finally settle on looking
straight ahead :) More confusion as the 4th to 8th placed guys were
led off before the Belarussian anthem was broadcasted... Scherbo
shrugged to indicate that he doesn't know what's happening. More
looking around for the flag as the anthem is played... and the
anthem finishes with only half way through it. Hmmmmm. Oh that's
Eileen Langsley I think trying to grab the lads for a photo as
they walked off the rostrum. And someone is trying to get an
interview off Scherbo...

Oh I hope Gymners who are actually there at San Juan such as Grace
who's been giving us great and very up-to-date reports don't
mind me writing this up... I'm only watching it on TV so I'm
sure you'll be able to give us more detailed and accurate reports
from the arena itself!

The gymnasts march out for the next rotation, which is of course
womens vault and mens pommel horse. The gymnasts are being presented
to the public. Octavian Belu is giving some instructions to Gogean
while she is in the line-out... strange...

Warm-up time! Have to say that the womens vault line-up is rather
unfamiliar, apart from Khorkina and the two Romanians, the others
are quite unexpected names for this final. Hmmmmm, sometime tonight
I'll probably confuse the VCR "record" button with the "stop"
button... hope not!

The crowd seems very quiet. Oh not anymore as Leyva Bermudes of cuba
goes first on vault. front 1 and 1/2 I think (I'm really terrible
in naming vaults except the Yurchenko ones! sorry) 9.637 for first
vault.

Ivankov on pommels. Very quick and precise and no mistakes! He punches
the air as he lands. 9.650.

Bermudes second vault scores... dunno

Khrokina's vault is her characteristic one. 9.662 first vault.

Pae Gil Su's pommels. Welcome back to the North Koreans and he'll
probably win this 9.825 yea,

Khorkina's second. A tiny little step back. She doesn't seem happy
but what with the "pains" that we've been hearing about her, I'm
not surprised that she is not smiling.

Another Cuban Annia Portuondo on vault. no big mistake...

And the camera's back to pommels with Li donghua of Switzerland.

And no, we're back with Portuondo again. stuck landing! the crowd
cheers more. A bit slack in the legs though during flight (looking
from the replay).

Li Donghua's pommels routine is backed by more cheers... no doubt
Portuondo's score comes up and her second vault is 9.825. Average
9.756.

Amanar vault... oops what happened to Li Donghua? She sat down after
it and smiled at the cameras... don't you have to do a second one
Simona? Or have I missed something... gee its difficult to do several
things at the same time.

Nemov on pommels. flares and flares. Happy Nemov. not many mistakes
in this rotation at all. 9.787.

9.787 average for Amanar. Valle of Spain on vault. not bad either.
9.700 first vault. A step sideways on the second.

Oh I missed Grigori Misutin's pommels

Tsavdaridou's vault. Happy she as well, Two well landed vaults.
9.518 but she's really smiling very lovely.

Patrice Crasimir on pommels. Quite good too. Everybody is having a
good day today. 9.725 and he waves and smiles.

Gogean vault. Little skip on landing her 1 and 1/2 twisting
Yurchenko. Similar second vault as there is also a little
skip. Gogean is congratulated by team mate Amanar. 9.825 and 9.775
gives Gogean a 9.800 average score.

Kim Hyon Il of North Korea on pommels. This guy is as quick as Pae
Gil Su on the flares! 9.762 only though

Joana Juarez of Spain on vault. 1/2 twist yurchenko. Again well
landed, Only a double front second vault.

Eric Poujade of France onto pommels. Seems a simple routine compared
to others but then hey, what do I know. 9.700.

Oh the rotation is over and the camera's on Gogean as it seems that
she won the vault again. And Pae Gil Su not surprisingly also won
the pommel horse.

A little rest whilst waiting for the next and final rotation
of the day, which will be womens uneven bars and mens still rings.

As Grace said, there'll be 11 starters for the womens bars. There
should be a few cool skills to be seen though, espeiclaly from
the French and Ukrainian girls so it should be very enjoyable.
The Rings should be Chechi country but we'll see.

OK here goes. Good old Lavinia Milosovici of Romania goes first.
Typically Romanian Geinger and Tkatchev. Plus a double front
dismount. No mistakes but don't think it'll get her a medal. A
little hop on landing.

Chechi to go first on rings. A challenge to the judges as to mark
him fairly being first up. Not a flinch from start to finish and
the familiar Chechi coolness on the apparatus, and aggression
after the apparatus. 9.825 difficult to beat indeed.

Kathleen Stark of Germany on bars (they didn't give Milo's
score...). A few reverse swings and the old lady is still going
well on what had always been Germany's best piece of apparatus.
9.725 for Stark and ahead of Milosovici (still don;t know what
Milo's score is)

Ivan Ivankov of Belarus. Nearly tipped over backwad on landing.
9.675.

Jaycie Phelps on bars. Don't particularly like how her feet loses
their pointiness sometimes especially during releases but that is
only a minor point ("point"! get it? Never mind...) :) 9.712 in
second place at the moment.

Damian Merino of Cuba on rings. He looks very serious. A step
forward on landing. 9.675.

Anna Mirgorodskaya of Ukraine. This should be good. Jaeger and
reverse swings galore a la Li Li in 1992. And a full-twisting
double back dismount. Legs a bit slack though during her reverse
swings as I look back t the replays... 9.725 joint first.

Dan Burinca of Romania who only appears in rings events (OK
that's not fair but I'm exaggerating). Not too convicning this
time. 9.712 though and goes second.

Svetlana Khorkina the defending champion on bars. Complex twists
and changes of direction her trademark. Very steady indeed from
start to finish. She still doesn't look happy despite having done
a good routine. Not like the expressive Khorkina I know from last
year. A very good score though 9.787 as she walks off the podium
(more treatment on her injury?)

Chris Lamonte of USA on the rings. This guy looks like he's gonna
die up there with his veins and facial expressions!
9.637

Isabelle Severino... going for her full-twist Geinger... and
catches it! (She feel during warm-up) A few hop-fulls and a
stuck full-twist double back to finish. This should be a good
score... yes 9.775 and second for the time being.

Jordan Jovtchev of Bulgaria on rings. Very good solid routine. I
don't know the ratngs are each of the elements on this piece of
apparatus but it looked very good.

Alexei Voropaev of Russia, Only 9.637.

Szilveszter Csallony of Hungary. 9.737

Dominiwue Dawes of USA on bars. She lost her swing in the middle
and had to do a stop-start on the bars. She's in tears yet again
and Kelli Hill went to console her. "You can do it" Kelli kept
saying. Replays showed that she lost the swing because her feet
touched the lower bar during a swing, and also on a swing on the
low bar her feet hit the floor so that's two mistakes to content
herself with. Only 8.787 and Dawes is still weeping.

Liu Xuan of China... here comes the one arm Geinger. Very well
done. Tkatchev. a whipped double layout dismount... "swimming"
a bit on landing but she's quite happy with it.

Meanwhile Kelli is still consoling Dom.

Only 9.700 for Liu xuan and the crowd boos. And Liu's smile has
gone completely.

Yelena Piskoun - two full-twist hops in a roll into Delchev, And
a full twisting double layout dismount well landed. Yelena huffing
and waiting for the score 9.787 it's joint first!

Elvire Teza of France. Should be cool. Jaeger. Reverse Tkatchev,
and a little release move (only releasing one hand... don;t know
what it's called,,,). Double front dismount with a little step
on landing. 9.750.

Lyubov Sheremeta of Ukraine. another cool youngster. Very quick
movements this little one. Similar to Pods. 9.750 also.

Piskoun hugs a tearful Khorkina! Svetlana must be thinking that
through all her injuries that she didn't have a chance of
retaining her gold medal but she did. Good on her. Yelena
herself is also very happy and those are chatting all the
while whilst waiting for the medals ceremony.

Chechi won the rings by a mile and a half.

Looks as though Piskoun herself is finding hard t contain
herself on the top of the medal rostrum. It's been a long
while she's been there! France continues its good progress
with another medalist in Isabelle Severino in the bronze
position.

Kathleen Stark standing next to Lyubov Sheremeta at the
finalist line-up really does look like mother and child
(no offence to either of them!).

Khorkina is finally smiling as she leaves the medal rostrum
with Piskoun. :)

Yuri Chechi is pretending to be scared of going up to the
rostrum. :) The crowd cheers loudly as his name is announced
and Chechi smiles back to them in return.

OK that is all from Day One of the event finals from Worlds'96.
Sorry if I didn't make sense at times but it is rather late
here at London now... it's 3am.

Do it again tomorrow.
