Re: changing gymns
Does anyone know when and
why Marianna left Dynamo? She has
never really
looked happy when I've seen her on
TV, but I guess I thought she must
like Dynamo
since she was there for so long-guess I was wrong. Kelli
Hill has always been one of my
favorite coaches to watch interacting with
athletes,
and I wish Marianna all the best.
*Just another quick note about the
world trials- showing the Aerial's
girls (Strug, Thompson, Kulikowski) so
happy, and their coach so proud
(plus, the group
hug) really ended the coverage on a great note. The
Forsters
seem like excellent coaches, and I hope that Kerri Strug
has
finally found the perfect situation.

Subject: ?"fish jump"?
Gymners,
In Indiana high school gymnastics, a lot of
girls perform that so-called
"fish
jump". I will look it up in
the new judges handbook to see what they
call
it. Anyway, around the high school
competitors, it is simply called
an inverted pike
jump or a tuck jump with one leg extended.
The first name
is used the most. If it is a "fish jump", how in
the world
did they come up with that name. At least they could do is name it
after
something it looks like...

World Trials
Hi, I know this is a question pertaining to old news, but
I was just able
to watch my tape of the world
trials last night. I'm sorry if
this has
been addressed before, I don't remember
reading about it. The
question:
How did Moceanu's floor routine
possibly overscore Miller's? Both
routines
were clean, but Dom did a full in, layout front full punch
front, layout front full, and 2.5 twist. Miller, on the other hand, did
one of the best floor routines I've seen from her with a
whip to full in,
layout double front twist, front
1 1/2 twist, and full-in. It seems
like
each of her passes was a notch above Moceanu's. I
greatly admire
Moceanu's gymnastics, but in this
case, I think that Shannon should have
been the
one to score the 9.95, and go into the worlds as the #1
American. Were there any deductions in Shannon's
routine that I did not
notice?
thanks, Emily

I don't understand about how things are called sometimes. One of the
commentators
referred the hop-full on unevens as a Thomas
hop. In
the
women's Code it is a Chusovitina. I know he did it on high bar
but I don't understand why they refer to it as that. So, anyway, I
know
if you do a skill someone has already done, in another position,
you get it named after you. Khorkina vault
is has been done before,
but tucked. It's called a Mroz and tucked, it's worth a 9.9. So,
will, Huilan's Gaylord be called a Huilan?

Hi!
Hi Everybody! My name
is Suzi R and I've been on this listserv for a
few weeks now.
Since I had a few minutes I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm
a junior
at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL (I'm actually from
Pittsburgh,
PA) majoring in Biology. I'm not
pre-med and don't know what I'm
going to do! I'm 20 years old and was in gymnastics
for 9 years (grades 2-10).
I competed for 4 years (1 year class IV, I year
class III, and 2 years level 8).
I wasn't a very good level 8 but I did
okay. I've been out of gymnastics
for
about 4 years now and was going to begin
teaching at a community center but I
just haven't
had time for it, maybe next quarter.
Anyways, I just wanted to
say hi b/c I'll
be responding to comments everyonce in a while and
thought you
should know who that random person
sending email to the listserv is.
A few comments: I love front tumbling - it helped me a
lot in my floor routine
when I was a level 8. Khorkina is
amazing - I'm completely amazed at her beam
routine.
I can't wait to see the Chinese Women in Atlanta - what a treat!!!
And I
think we should try and keep comments on this listserv centered on
gymnastics... that is why we all subscribed!
thanks for reading and i'm
looking forward to hearing from you.

Kelli Hill would appreciate a Chunichi Cup
Poster
Hi All,
I spoke to Kelli Hill last night after our
Parents Association meeting (my
daughter goes to
Hill's and I'm on the Board of Directors) and was telling her
about the GYMN list.
I mentioned that I would look into getting a poster from
Worlds if
she was interested. She said that
the poster that she would like
the most would be
from the 1995 Chunichi Cup. Dominique (Dawes) was featured
on the poster and Kelli had originally gotten five of them
but unfortunately
left all of them on a train
during the trip.
If anyone can help getting one of these it would
really be appreciated.
Reasonable cost (I would assume) would be no
problem. I'm sure that I could
also get Dom to autograph a tee shirt or picture (or
whatever).
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I haven't forgotten those of you who
have sent email requesting
information about the
Maryland Classic. There was some
question about where
the meet was going to take
place this year. I'll will be sending you (and the
list)
email once things get straightened out.

Hop full on bars.
I don't understand the logic, though, of giving Chusovitina the credit for
a
move which is done essentially the same on both HB and UB. After all,
we don't call the Jaeger, Deltchev,
and Tkatchev different names just because
they are performed on one apparatus verse another. To me:
hop full = thomas
hop.

I actually think both Bart Conner and Kathy
Johnson-Clarke do a great job.
I especially appreciate their commentary in
the men's competition where I
know less about
scoring and need their comments more.
I love that both
Bart and Kathy have so much respect for originality
in gymnastics.
BTW, was it just my mood or was the television coverage
of the AA great?

retired due to the large amount of injuries she

posters...?
Hello again. I
am looking for some information on posters. The ones
listed
in International Gymnast don't necessarily interest me. I was
wondering
if anyone could send me some information about maybe a catalogue
that contained a lot of posters (US girls preferably). I am extremely
interested
in Dominique Dawes, Amanda Borden, Dominique Moceanu,
Shannon
Miller...I appreciate any information that will help. Thanks in advance!
Gymnastically
Yours,
Aaron
P.S. Did ya hear? Marianna Webster went to Hill's
Angels!
Now maybe we will see her re-emerge into the spotlight.

Simona Amanar
Am I
the only one on this list who LIKES Simona Amanar?? I agree that her
beam
is a bit lacking but her other ruitines are
great! Everyone says how
bad her coreography is on floor,
but I think she just doesn't have time for
great
dance with 4 huge toubling runs. Her floor at the European Cup with
three runs had really cute dance, I thought. Nothing compared to Miller or
Khorkina, but
certainly comperable to, say, Dominique Moceanu.
Her double
layout off bars is great, and
her double twisting yurchenko is HUGE.
Just
my 2 cents,
Liz

Re: Oksana Fabrichnova
Oksana was unable to
compete at the Sabae World Championships due to
an
injured back. Apparently, this is an old
injury, which just flared up again
due to another
illness (Arkaev described it as her having a
"cold on her
back").
Despite
her absence, the Russians were pleased to see her promiently
featured
on the promotional poster (the photo of
her on beam was the largest of the 4
or 5 used)
for the event and she should be back in competition soon from what
I
gather.
She, along with Elena Grosheva, is
on the list of "scheduled" competitors for
the
upcoming pre-Olympic event in Atlanta, but who's supposed to be there and
who actually shows up are often two very different matters
when it comes to
gymnastics meets.
Oksana
has been plagued by injury and illness throughout her career. In
Brisbane
she had a broken finger and could only perform on one event (beam)
and at last summer's Goodwill Games she was less than 100%
due to a bout with
the flu and an accompanying
fever.
To date her best result has been the '93 European Cup, where
she won the AA
gold along with fellow Russian
Dmitri Karbonenko.

IMHO, Simona Amanar
is a very talented and skilled athlete, who is exciting
to
watch. However, I agree that unfortunately she is not very well

Hard Copy
HI!
Here is the story they had on Hard Copy (a
tabloid news show) about
gymnastics. Enjoy :)
"Hard
Copy investigates the ugly side of the world's most beatiful
sport"
"Now the heart
breaking story of a young American gymnast. SHe
appeared
headed for stardom until she literally
starved herself to death.
Tonight some are saying that it was the pressures
of the sport that
killed her."
"She
got down to about 42 pounds at one point and the doctors were like
'how is she even walking?' but she could," said
Christy's mom.
"In the highly competitive world of gymnastics,
Christy's parents lost
a five year battle to try
to save their daughter's life. But it was one
fight
that their golden girl just couldn't win."
Christy was a hopeful
for a medal in the '92 Olympics. On July 26, 1994
Christy died of anoerexia.
She weighed less than 40 pounds.
"More
then anything I felt that she was robbed. Christy never had a
chance to live. The only thing she knew was that gym." said Bo Moreno,
Christy's fiancee.
He blames the death on a sport
that demands perfect and coaches that
put medals
before people.
Bo refers to gymnasts as victims.
It talks
bout Cathy Rigby and her anorexia. SHe say that she does think
the
coach plays a role n the eating disorders.
Christy's mom blames it on
the system that does anything to turn up a
champion
no matter what the cost.
Christy's mom would not let Christy start
gymnastics of she could do it
again. She would
just let her be alittle girl.
All her parents have left is
a room full of medals.
"All the medals and all the glory in the world is not worth it. My
beautiful
daughter, she's gone forever."
Now a reporter is talking about
it:
"Christy's death has forced USA Gymnastics into action. Now
steps have
finally been taken to educate young
gymnasts about eating disorders and
early warning
signs. But there is still a long ways to go in a sport
that
is already littered with broken bodies and shattered dreams."
That's
it! Gotta go now!
BYE!!!!!
You friends,
Margi and Mardi :)
