Subject: Where is Kerri?

Hi there,

First let me give a little introduction for this must be the first time you
hear from me. As you can see, the fame of this gymnserver has even
reached Europe! My name is Bart, 22 years old, and I'm currently studying at
the Universities of Nijmegen (Holland) and Lille (France). I am not a gymnast
myself -but participating in windsurf-competitions-, but I really love that
sport. My favourites are Selk (Nl) and LeGros (F), though you possibly may
not know them, and Kerri Strug, who of course you should know!!
Well, Kerri is the main reason for me writing this message; Since about 5
years she's my penpall too. Untill now she and me had to move a lot, wich
resulted in many changes of addresses. Now I'm afraid I've lost track of
her; The last time I heard from her she was staying in Edmond, Oklohoma.
Does anybody know at wich club she trains actually?
Besides that I was wondering if any international gymnastic-tournaments
are going to take place either in France or The Netherlands. Anybody knows?

Subject: Moceanu's jump

I don't thinkj Moceanu should be deducted for her jump after her first
front tumbling pass. It is clear to see that it is controlled. After
she punches up into it, she lifts her back leg a little, kind of like a
sissone. Then, as soon as she lands, she is solid. I do remember seeing
her have trouble with it I think in Sabae, but it wasn't a landing
problem. When she punched up into it, her momentum was so great that she
flew out of bounds, she still stuck the landing though. I like it
personally. It adds a different flare to the routine (all her moves add
a different flare). People who have seen Dominique compete her floor
routine before know that is there on purpose, not because she can't stick
it. Her other front tumbling doesn't contain such a leap/jump, so what
do you say about those landings that she "sticks" without a leap/jump.

Before I end this, I would like to say that I am very impressed with this
young lady. When she is on, she is ON. I would like to see her upgrade
her floor routine to some more difficult tumbling and/or 4 passes,
instead of just 3.

Subject: Bill Roth

Bill did compete in the preliminaries during the West Point Open. I
don't remember if he competed in the all around or not, but he did not
make finals on vault (one of his better events). Bill managed to final
in Pommels, Rings, P-bars, and High-bar. High bar was byfar the most
exciting event to see him on. He scored a 9.9. He did a beautiful
Gaylord 2 into an imediate jam straight body invert. Very nicely Executed.

Subject: Olympic accom. and Moceanu's jump

I wrote a message last night about information I have about Olympic
accomodations, but I haven't received it, so I don't know if it got sent or
if I accidentally deleted it. Somebody please e-mail me and let me know if
it was posted.
I know everyone is sick of hearing about Moceanu's jump, but since I can't
recall anyone stating the reason that I have always assumed she jumps, I
thought I'd write in.
Since judges want to see gymnasts perform skills as if they were easy, I
think Moceanu is showing off her power. Not many gymnasts can punch a layout
front out of a front-full, especially not with room to spare, so I think
she's saying to the judges and the audience: "No problem!"

I met Erika Flammer last year at high school nationals and my friend and
I were curious about the same thing. We asked her about it and she told
us that she was not related to Monica Flammer. Erika is from someplace
in Pennsylvania. I don't remember where she placed last year at high
school nationals, but I think that she did well. I think that she might
have been in the senior division of J.O. nationals (or whatever that meet
is called), but I'm not too sure. I went shopping with her and she was a
very interesting person.

Bill did not compete the all-around, he is protecting a few old injuries,
he only performed on Pommels, Rings, P-bars and High Bar. and made all 4
finals. His next competition will be at Winter Cup in Colorado in Feb.,
where he will be competing all-around.

Subject: Newsweek

In this weeks issue of Newsweek magazine, there is an ad for Visa on
page 11 that has a small (very small) picture of Kim Zmeskal, Dom Moceanu,
Jessica Davis, and I can't tell who else. It isn't much, but its nice to see
something with gymnastics in it. It also has a guy standing on a vault with
a weed wacker in his hand.(You'll have to see the ad to see what I mean)

Has anyone ever dislocated their elbow? Mine keeps popping out
because it is very hyper extended. What should I do to fix or
strengthen it to stop this from happening?

Why? She's just as good as anyone else and in my mind
better. She has the expierience that the youngers don't and the drive
and determination that no one can match. Shannon Miller fell of the
beam in the nationals and still came away with second. Kim hardly ever
falls especially under presure. Shannon has fallen a lot lately but no
one counts her out.(I do like shannon so don't worry)

Actually she only took off 2 years. She started working out
again in May of 94.
And in reference to your comment on her level of
difficulty, I saw her in an exibition soon after her knee surgery and
she performed on beam and bars and she had as much difficulty as anyone
else if not more. You saw her floor routine yourself on the R and R
Challenge.
You have your right to your opinion but i just do not
agree.

I was watching a tape of the dual meet between the US and Ukraine men that
ABC aired awhile back and aws curious if anyone had heard more about Oleg
Kosyak. He looked like a real up-and-comer. I know someone asked about his
teammate, Igor Korbchinsky, but I never saw a reply. Also, what has
happened to Alexei Nemov? He was supposed to be the next Scherbo, but after
his less than successful meet at the European Championships last summer he
seems to have disappeared from the scene. Does anyone else out there keep
track of the men, or does *everyone* watch only the women?!?

What if the gymnasts tumbles and lands out of bounds, instead of
landing in bounds and then taking a step out? In the second case I can see
two tenths being taken, but I've seen the first happen (a layout that
started to close to the corner), and would suspect that this should only
lose 0.1. The gymnast has to take a step to get back in bounds, but I
don't know if that should really count against them.

may be awarded for that skill (or for any combinations into or out of that
skill). Difficulty may be awarded (say in Competition II or III where a D
is required) but not bonus (The bonus possibility totals .6, .3 for
extra D/E and .3 for combination bonus at the Elite level--it's different
in JO)

Anyhow, if a routine had a D + D it would get .2 in combination bonus on
bars. So, in Shannon's case, I assume she had a D before the overshoot (I
don't remember her routine without looking at it again.) If she did a
planche on the overshoot, it was likely a .2 or more deduction. So, she
"lost" her bonus connection and also .1 for an extra D.

If she did a "B" overshoot (no deduction, but no handstand--the judge has
to determine based on what athlete does in competition) and intended to do
a D, she would still be short a bonus connection and an extra D. (So her
Start Value would be down .3 assuming she had no other "back-ups")

Whew--when I write out the rules, no wonder it's confusing! Hope that
clarified something.

Actually, they never said during the meet why Kim wasn't there and
clearly, young Kim fans everywhere were extremely disappointed. I just
assumed that Kerri Strug was there in Kim's place, but no mention of why
there was no Kim.

Remember they are VERY structured in their program there.
I would expect EVERYone on their team to do EVERYTHING identically.
China does not seem to reward diversity, so all the women
rouding off leftie does not surprise me.
I hope they dont just cut people who try to do it with their rights....
