An Introduction
Hi everybody. My name is Deb, and I just subscribed
this morning. I really
wasn't aware that I would
be recieving so many messages! I'm not a
gymnast,
just a fan, and some of the terminology
is kinda hard to figure out.... but I
am sure I'll pick it up in no time at all! I am a senior at
Indiana University
of Pennsylvania (IUP). I enjoy reading your messages, they are
very
informative. One of these days I'll
post something.
I do have a question though. I found Gymn on the internet, and I was
looking
through old digests, and I can't acess anything from before 93. Maybe it's my
server. Who knows.
Well,
that's who I am. Talk to you soon.

Rythymic Worlds
Just
a question to those who know a bit about rythymic
gymnastics. Do
you know what happened to Kasumi Takahashi of Australia
at
the Worlds in October ? Her talent
should have taken her into the top
20 or at least to qualify for Atlanta
but I didn't see her name in the
final
standings. Any information would be
appreciated.

USA Press Release: Death of Luis Lopez
PRESS RELEASE
USA
Gymnastics - Indianapolis, IN
Luis Lopez, a 1992 Olympian and former
University of New Mexico
gymnast, died of leukemia
on October 7 in his hometown of Mexico City.
"He was an
outstanding young man and one of the premier gymnasts at
the
international level," said University of New Mexico's coach Rusty
Mitchell.
Lopez,
26, took fifth all-around and tied for sixth on parallel bars
at the 1990 NCAA Championships. In 1991 he won the high bar event.
He
was the only gymnast to qualify for finals in
all six events during
the 1991 Pan American Games.
He represented Mexico in the 1992 Olympic
Games.
The gymnastics
community is saddened by Lopez's death and our
thoughts
and wishes go to his friends and family.

I've heard that US men's
gymnastics is having a bad time nowadays,
particulary at university competitions.
Why is
that?
Are universities cutting down previligies
to students who dedicate some
of their precisious time practcing instead
of studing?
I understand that sports should be
available and promoted in school but
shouldn't it
be continued for ever? I mean in university and after on in
everyones lifes?

Wait, wasn't Bo Moreno a wrestler who was also
anorexic or bulimic (or both)?
I seem to remeber
hearing that somewhere, but they never seem to mention
*that*
on these shows that talk about Christy...
(yes,
I understand that Christy died and Bo is alive, but still, it's
worth a mention)

Everyone
brought up Fabrichnova, and I got reminded of this
young lady.
She was supposedly one of the brightest stars for the Russians
in 1993,
until she broke her hand right before the
1993 Worlds and then both
arms at the Russian
Nationals. Does anyone have any information on her
current
whereabouts and whether she is still in the sport?

I'm looking forward
to seeing Fabrichnova again; she reminds me a
lot
of Boginskaya,
especially on beam--the same elegance and long lines,
and
even that same slightly skewed foot placement as Bogie.
I enjoy her bars,
too, although I think Khorkina's now my
current bars fave.

Maybe it's just
me, but the weirdest image of gymnasts competing
in
one of those huge, ornate Moscow subway stations popped into
my head when I read this :-). (Will the contestants get free
sandwiches?)

No, I don't find it cruel -
and this is not a recent thing either.
Those
of us who had the Triplecast
back in gymns earliest days (it's been HOW
LONG???)
will recall Bart sharing many such sentiments back in
'92 during
some of the roundtable discussions that
took place during the gymnastics
coverage.

I just wanted to say that I
think she is right that Bart wishes that these
men
competiting (the ones he's comentating
for) I know he wished that the
USA men were as good as his team in
1984.
I think he is upset about the consistency problem. Because that is what it
is. A consistency problem.

I am
the assistant coach of the University of Wisconsin -Madison,
club gymnastics team.
I was wondering if it is possible to find out about
other collegiate club teams so that we can compete against
them and
possible hold an invite. Because we are not NCAA affiliated we do
not have
access to these other schools. If possible, could you find out what
other
collegiate club gymnastics teams are around
and what their meet schedule
is. I greatly appreciate your taking time to
read this letter. This
information is very important to me and the team. If you know of anything
please let me know.
Thanks
again,
Amy

No, Bican was not at Worlds, which I thought was a shame. In
general the
Romanians are not my favorite team, but I've always liked Ana
Maria. I heard
there was a LOT of politics
involved in choosing the World team - the rivalry
between
the Deva and Bucharest schools is apparently something fierce...

Yekaterina's
injuries unfortunately forced her to quit gymnastics. :( It
was really a shame, since she was a gorgeous gymnast. I
don't know what she's
doing now, but maybe I can
ask a Russian team official next time I see one
(pre-Olympics?).
It was either Arkayev or the Russian team doctor who
told me
(in Dortmund) that she had to retire, so
the info is probably (and
unfortunately)
reliable.

Fabrichnova
was not at Worlds, to many people's disappointment. She did
grace the promotional poster though (which thrilled Khorkina's coach Boris
Pilkin!).
Oksana has had a sore back for a while now, and that's why it was
decided to leave her at home. Hopefully she'll be fully
recovered in time for
the meet in Ontario. I think
she also might compete in the pre-Olympics.
Interestingly, I just
read in Sovetsky Sport that Svetlana Khorkina was
nearly kept off
the Sabae team because she also had a sore back. Arkayev wanted
to leave her at
home, but she REALLY wanted to go and, obviously, won out. :)

Introduction
Greetings!
My name is Rebecca and I subscribed
only yesterday. I was a
competitive gymnast at the high school level in Apple
Valley, Minnesota
during the late 1980s and am now
in graduate school in NYC. I'm
thrilled
to have a place to discuss gymnastics,
since most of my friends here think
I'm a little crazy for following it so
enthusiastically.
One quick question-(forgive
me if this has already been discussed),
Female Athlete Triad is abreviated to FAT, is this or should this be
a problem?
I'd appreciate any responses. Thanks in advance,
Rebecca

Regarding Bo Moreno, I was under the impression that he
shared with
Christy about how wrestlers lose weight, telling her exactly
how HE did
it...So he is not so innocent
either. And from what psych I
have
studied, a lot of past sufferers of anorexia
/ bulimia can recognize it
in others also more
quickly than another. Not that it
is all his fault,
but USA
gymnastics is not the only one to blame, and his previous
interviews are proof of that.

Bican off of Sabae
Team.
This is odd, since I know that she won the bronze on bars at
their nationals
recently and she did not go to
Worlds. But Gogean, who fell off of BB and
UB at
their nationals made it. I guess that there was alot
of politicing.
After all, Hatagan
finished fourth, but only worked one routine in Sabae.
Why!
As
for Oksana Fabrishnova, I she finished second on
vault at their nationals
but I don't know how she
did in the AA.
It seems, at least for Romania, that picking the
gymnasts to compete is much
more nasty than what
the USA had to do in Barcelona. Rememebr THAT mess?

P.S. If anyone out

Olympics
Invitational, would they please EMAIL me privately. My source
at IBm who runs the Web Page avertiszing the meet hasn't responded to me.
