Re: Italian Nationals and '92 O.G.
<< The Individual AA final
results consisted of compulsories and optionals.
They finished:
1. Galieva
2. Amanar
3. Boguinskaia
4. Piskun
5. Marinescu
I wonder what Marinescu
is thinking about Boguinskaia now?>>
Yeah,
I never understood Marinescu's boasting about Atlanta
-- I didn't even
think she'd make AA finals, since Amanar, Gogean, and Milo always seem to
place
higher than she does (even if they shouldn't). She's lucky Gogean
is
sick.
<< And what's been
happening with Khorkina lately?
>>
Does anyone now why she placed so low in this
meet?
Also, several people have written saying they dont want Moceanu to compete
at
Atlanta with an injury because they dont want
a repeat of Zmeskal in 92.
Hey, she may not have won any individual
medals, but Zmeskal had the highest
optional total in the world in team competition, which
certainly helped the
U.S. win the bronze. I like Amanda Borden, but there's no way
she -- or Kim
Kelly-- could have scored higher than Zmeskal
at that meet. John Tesh would
have you believe
Barcelona was an "Olympic nightmare" for Zmeskal,
but IMO it
was certainly worth it for her and the
U.S. for her to compete, even with the
stress
fracture.

Olympic Trials Tickets
I have a block of 4 series tickets left for the
Olympic Trials in Boston next
week. The four seats
are in Section 306, Row 9. We are
unable to attend due to
a family emergency. The series ticket includes admission to
each session, June
27-30, for both men's and women's
compulsories and optionals. These series
tickets
sold for $40 each, with Ticketmaster padding the total with their fees
to over $50 apiece.
I will cover those costs and sell them for the face value
of $40 each. I
have also split some tickets out if you are interested in only
men's or women's events.
If you are interested
please email to
***@Lilly.com
I am sending these via
overnight UPS, C.O.D.
I hope someone else can enjoy them since we
can't!

New stuff on USA Gymnastics Online
The pages for Olympic Trials are
up. It includes a press release
with
details on both Miller's and Moceanu's petitions to Trials. It also includes
the
full selection procedures document. Also, the online contest for June
(only ten days left) is for a free Trials t-shirt. If you visit the
"Competitive
Rosters" page for Trials, you will find
instructions for
sending good-luck email to
any athlete at the Trials (yes even Moceanu and
Miller).
Additionally,
Membership information is available online -- all of this info
went into effect May 1st (or later, or is a preview of stuff
to come). One
of the new membership categories, "General
Membership," caters to fans,
parents, etc -- and with a credit card, you can sign up for
General
Membership online.
Soon, the Lockerroom
store will be available. You'll be
able to buy videos
and other USAG merchandise
online with your credit card.

WAG-U.S. jr. Champs 84/85
Can anyone tell me
who the U.S. Jr. Champs were during the mid-1980s.
Even the top three or so gymnasts would
be helpful. I don't have IG
going back that far.
Thanks in advance.

DRINKING GAME: BETH/ELFI/TIM/JOHN
I almost forgot about this one:
Drink
if you hear any commentator say "take it away or
give it away".
I hated those phrases and they popped up in AA and EFs
galore.

Olympic Trial WebSite
USA Gymnastics has a
web site for the upcoming Olympic trials in Boston.
Looking over the site,
it seemed pretty good. The had
pages on the
competitive schedule, roster and procedures. Press releases pertaining to
athletes are also included.
Of interest to many
would be the pages that outline the selecting process
and
petitioning requirements and guidelines.
Check it out!

Re: Moceanu, petitioning etc.
HI,
Just my opinion here.
As a fan, but more importantly a human being, I
believe
usag should not allow Dom M. to compete in
Atlanta. All
alliances
aside. The girl collapsed trying
her first dismount home. She
has a 4 inch stress fracture. She should not be allowed to
jeopardize
her health and future.

Moceanu article in "Time"
Time
magazine has an Olympics special issue out... and almost
predictably
there's an issue on Moceanu in there.
One
blurb in the TV Viewer's Guide section (which does have a nice
table of when most events will be shown) does take the
Taking A Chance With
The Favorite Award: "For the women, Ukraine's world
champion Lilia
Podkopayeva, Russia's Svetlana Khorkina and America's Dominique Moceanu
will
try to outdo each other for the all-around
gold." (Scherbo
gets their nod
as a "presence" in
Atlanta.) This is the perfect
paragraph-long
summary...for those who don't know
much other than that there's this thing
called the
Olympics every four years. It makes
sense to have a quick blurb
like this for Joe
Average, but if anything, it has been and always will be a
toss-up in AA.
Legitimate nods to Pods and Khorkina for their
previous
performance, and the same could almost be
said for Dom M (the article was
certainly written
before news of the injuries), but it also falls into the
usual
trap of grooming a favorite... few stories ever mention Dom Dawes, and
Miller
isn't quite the press favorite of previous years. So the blurb is
typical
fluff.
The
Dominique article itself: Plays up
Dom M's normal
teenagerness--a
LOT. Emphasis, implied and
explicit, on how she's fairly
typical. Description of her room, some flattering
words about her looks
(I've never heard her looks compared to Audrey
Hepburn before) (but with the
usual
stats), describes how she isn't afraid to speak her mind or do what
she wants. The
rest of the article tells the story of her parents and how
she got to Karolyi's, and mentions
the downplaying that Bela's been doing.
It's
fairly nice to all the people mentioned.
I'm
trying to remember the Zmeskal hype, but this article
does seem
somewhat different, even though it is
written by the same author (Jill
Smolowe) that did the Zmeskal article in '92. Perhaps a bit more spin
control... there has definitely been more controversy this
time around than
last. It also doesn't really seem to hype her
that much... it could easily
go a lot
further.
Still pondering...

balletic and very interesting
to watch it is also
very difficult.

A lot of stuff
First, of all, I am sorry to hear that Gina Gogean may miss the 1996
olypmics with appendicitis. I thought that was a
minor ailment. Some
surgery, a few days of rest,
and you were back to normal. I guess not. I
hope
she recovers soon. The gymnastics competition would be slighty
diminished by the loss of such a good gymnast.
MY
REPLY: You usually are okay fairly quickly I believe ... In the sense
that you can be up and about leading a fairly normail life. I
had a
friend who was fairly alright after her
operation expect she couldn't do
PE for over a month ... including swimming
for risk of ripping the
stiches I believe. Some how I don't think gymnastics ...
especially the
olympics
would be doctor recommended. So
basically Gina will probably be
up and about fairly
quickly, but up a flipping will take a lot longer.
