Hiya

I'm  probably  re-iterating an old discussion trail and  seem  to
recall  posting  on  this subject about 18 months  ago  but  here
goes....

Seeing  Bogi compete again in the Euro's was really great  -  but
y'know  (! ) what let her down, the colour of  her  leotard.  The
floor  for the FX was a very off-white and Bogi in her all  white
sequinned  number did not look the part. Out of interest, do  the
gymnasts  get  to find out what colour the floor will  be  before
they  compete  in  the big comps? I seem  to  remember  that  the
Barcelona  Olympics  floor was a light royal blue and  this  went
well with the Romanian's leo's.

Any opinions??

In gymn,

Vick

The floor at Barcelona was a sort of rust shade of brown.  I remember
thinking the Australians' yellow leos, which I thought looked good
against the blue in Indianapolis, didn't look that great against the brown.

To imply that this was just another suit in a sue-crazy world is
cruel. The selection process in 1992 was beneficial to noone, unfair
to some athletes and put Kim Kelly out in the cold when she hit
at all three meets. She beat Wendy Bruce at both the Trials and
Championships.

Surely she has competed against better. Personally, I don't really
care for Moceanu's gymnastics but I am certaintly not going to go
around making rude comments about her or her gymnastics. Marinescu is
good too but how can anyone say that she is the best in the world? I
just think that you don't have a right to go around and put others down
just because their not as good as you are.

  Marinescu also

I would. Marinescu herself has a lot to learn. She's not as
high and mighty as she may think.

  In that IG interview

Than why did she make such a comment about Bogi?
What's the difference between Milo and Bogi? They are both terriffic
gymnasts who have beaten the odds. Oh wait, Bogi's from a different
country. I must have forgotten. Silly me....

Don't forget Betty Okino- she was also was injured and did not compete in the
Olympic trials and petitioned onto the Olympic squad.  Michelle Campi took
the alternate spot, but Okino took up a spot too that could have been
Kelly's....

Vicki, I have to agree with you that the colour of the leotard and the
floor shouldn't clash. It makes it hard to watch...I suppose Bog. could have
looked like she became part of the floor under certain lights or
something odd like that. The floor at Barcelona was both brown and light
royal blue. Not at the same time though. -Lisa

Subject: Former USSR republics in women's Euro Finals

Has there been a post about why so many pulled out from the US classic
after Comp.? Just curious...

I never saw an answer to the questions about whos record Scherbo had
broken. The record that they were probably refering to on the tele,
(which I did not see), was his own record. Scherbo beat his old record,
and that is probably why they did not give another name for the athlete
he originally displaced, the first time he broke it...

I just noticed (considering that I had posted about the Former soviet
medal count etc not to long ago in World Championships)that if you look
at finals (for women) at the Euros this year the former republics, which
would have only been allowed 2 spots before, occupied 5 or 6 of 8 (or 9
in one case).

Anyone else catch the Junior Olympic Nationals televized on the Sports
Channel last night? I only saw the 13 - 14 and then the 16 + people (I think
but not certain how it was grouped). It was really refereshing to see
faces I haven't heard of or seen before. One gymnasts (last name
Dixon) from Illinois did a really neat wrong grip front giant - immediate
wrong grip endo then a Tkatchev as a series. It looked SO COOL. Lots of
hops on the low bar jump to high transitions.

Stacy Wong of California (the 16 + AA champ) Threw an into-the-corner-without-
an-inch-to-spare AWESOME non piked double layout (NAILED THE LANDING!) and
a super high tkatchev on bars. Also, there were alot of triple fulls. A few
gymnasts even seemed to finish the twist priot to landing and just dropped out
of the move. Super cool.

Most impressive combination tumbling pass was Wong (again) for her second
pass of front-ro-whip-whip-ff-double full with so much power. She's
built like Mary Lou. She's SO STRONG!

Subject: OPRAH!

I saw the Oprah Winfrey Show here yesterday, and now I understand why
everyone was so angry!
It was terrible! I cannot believe that they could say some of the things
they did!
Julissa Gomez was injured performing a difficult move - Yurchenko. But, they
didn't mention that hundreds of other girls all over the world are competing
it successfully.
I wasn't impressed with Kristy Phillips much. She kept contradicting
herself. Betty should have spoken more, but what she said was good. She knew
she had a serious injury, but chose to compete, FOR HERSELF!
As for eating disorders, you must remember that millions of people, not only
gymnasts have anorexia or bulimia. (sp?)
Gymnastics is a risky sport, so is motor racing, rugby, athletics, all
sports! If you do not want to be injured or hurt you should stay in bed all
day!
Gymnastics is not the only way to get hurt!
What about the positive side of the sport? The fact that we enjoy it, it
teaches extreme discipline, it keeps teenagers who could be out doing drugs
etc. off the street.
The program overall, made me sick!
Please would someone send me the address where I can write to the show
(e-mail)

I don't know if this is true, but I thought I'd ask:

Was Einat Kedar's 8th place finish on vault the first time an Israeli gymnast
has ever qualified for event finals? I've never seen one before. Kodoos to her
if this is the case!

I have another *Whatever happened to* question....

I came across an old IG magazine (1977), and saw some pictures of Nelli Kim
in it....what has been going on with her?  I always remember her from the 76
Olympics, and the commentators talking about how she always seemed to be
pushed to one side because of the *competition* between Olga and Nadia.

Thanks for any help on this!!

Michal Schahaf won the vaulting title at the 1993 Junior Europeans (over
Cacovean and Rusan of Romania).

Also, Maya Shani of Israel won the silver behind Milosovici and ahead of
Vandisheva of Russia on bars at the 1993 European Cup.

Does anyone know:
1. Is Kim Kelly the only gymnast to score three 10's in
a single NCAA Championships?
I think Hope Spivey-Sheely may have done it in '93, but not sure.

2.  Is there a web site where you can find out the current NCAA
records, like team and apparatus records?

3.  Has any NCAA gymnast scored over a 39.80?
I know Kristen Kenoyer, Dee Foster, Agina Simpkins and Jenny Hansen
have scored 39.80.

Thanks,

I remember a gymnast by the name of Elena Naimushina (or something similar)
from the late seventies.  She was adorable.  I remember at that time she did
a back handspring sideways across the beam instead of down the beam.  I
think she also did one armed back handsprings on beam (innovative stuff for
the times).  Next to Nadia back then, she was one of my favorites.  Anyone
know what happened to her?

Hi all:

I wanted to alert all of you golf players, raffel ticket buyers, and

Maccabiah Games in Israel next summer.

a      Golf Tournament
on        June 6, 1996

to help raise the necessary funds to send the USA Gymnastics team to the
prestigious Macccabiah Games.

These games are designed to provide an opportunity for athletes who are of
Jewish faith descent to come together and compete in their respective
sport.  Because the games are for a particular segment of the population
the selected teams need to finance their trip.  Your assistance through

Subject: L5-L10 Fundraising

I'm going to start posting regularly the results of fundraising efforts in
our *very* small gym.  Currently, we have @ 22 gymnasts on team and are a
"quality rather than quantity" effort.

Having been behind in fundraising the past three years following a *massive*
parental burnout four years ago, the Berthoud School of Gymnastics parents
have realized that we need to raise funds in order for the kids to get a
quality competition experience out of state.  Last year, we had to decline
invitation to a meet because of a short time line coinciding with a very
close after Christmas set of expenses.

We've set up a committee to set the fundraising budget in coordination with
the coaches.  Early guesstimate is that we'll try to raise $10 - $12
thousand dollars this year for competition expenses.  That's roughly $500
per kid.

I've arranged for the local (Colorado State University) NCAA rep to brief us
in September about what we can, and can't do, regarding NCAA eligibility for
our gymnasts.  This was at the advice of NCAA, where their compliance office
said that we need to set up a relationship with a trained NCAA rep because
even a lawyer would have problems reading and interpreting the NCAA manual
as it applies to qualification.

Our fundraising committee is separate from the fundraising budget committee.
We'll be posting our successes and failures to the group in hopes that
other folks can get some value out of it.

This summer, before competition season, we will be putting on two car washes
(the last one netted $558.23), participating in a craft show and doing a
raffle.  We hope to raise $7,000 of our required funding through these
efforts in order to provide for the compulsory team.

We also have two consignment leo sales per year, one at the start of the
fall season and the other @ Thanksgiving for Christmas present leos.

We'll probably be doing a Christmas wreath sale in November and hope to
raise $2 - $3 thousand dollars on that.  <If> we're running behind on
fundraising, it'll be time to stage the dreaded Christmas bake sale.

The key to a successful Christmas bake sale is to have it the weekend before
Christmas in a very successful public shopping area.  Our local WalMart lets
us use their vestibule.  We have everybody involved bring in special
Christmas cookies, breads, pies, etc.  We may raffle off a gingerbread
house, a Happy Holidays Barbie (if they're in short supply again) or other
desirables.  All of the goodies are weighed, put on decorated trays and they
sell really quickly.  Much better than any other form of bake sale I've
participated in but realistically figure that $3,000 in income is the most
you can make from this fundraiser.

Then it's on to optional season.  By the time it starts, we hope we'll have
our basic funding accounted for but that still leaves special events
fundraising for regional and national competition.  We've got several
possible fundraisers on the agenda...a silent auction and Valentines' Dance
are under consideration.

How's everybody else doing in terms of planning for their gym's seasons?
What expenses do you try to cover?  We're going for coaches fees, meet fees
and some other incidental fees in this year's budget.

Regards,

Cindy
