Re: Catania Cup
I met Chen Cuiting at China Cup in 1993. It
was her first time
judging at an International event - she
received her FIG brevet in
the
Chinese FIG course at the beginning of that year. She is a lovely
girl,
and also an excellent judge - she topped the Chinese course.
She was studying Commerce,
or Economics at university at the time.

Bogie & 90 Euros

is completely right, but I just wanted to point out that Boginskaya
did
sweep the gold medals at the 1990 European
Championships, which is arguably
as much of a feat
as if she had swept it at Worlds.
There was still no team
competition. Why don't the
organizers of these meets
have someone that knows
something about gymnastics write up the bios?

Society's reaction to the death of an athlete
I thought of this when
hearing the news reports on the death of skating star
Sergi
Grinkov(sp?). Every news report I heard mentioned that there
weren't any
drugs or alcohol in his system at the
time of death.
Why is it that as a society, we assume that when an
athlete dies at an early
age that that person has
had a drug or alcohol over dose? This is the
impression
that I got from the broadcast. Please tell me if there is something
to my line of reasoning, because my family tells me that I'm
nuts.

Grinkov dying & '95 Worlds Results
I
know I must sound like the most culturally isolated person on this
earth, but could someone kindly update me or provide more
information
on exactly what happened to Grinkov and/or an address to send a sympathy
card to Gordeyeeva and family. I
think the whole thing is very sad
since they were
so young and just recently coming to the country. I know
this
is a gymnastics mailing list but also skatefans-l
people monitor
this list and if you want to email
me privately I would be glad to
hear more. Also,
if someone could give a quick review of top three
results
for the '95 Worlds, I would appreciate it greatly. I lost net
access during the worlds and had all my gymn
digests deleted because my
account overloaded. I
don't have cable and I have never received an
issue
of IG although I sent in my check six months ago. I also don't
have WWW access very easily. Thanks in advance. Hawaii

Korbut tricks
Korbut
did two variations on a layout back salto. On beam
she did a
back flip to a sitting position with no
twist. I think she introduced
this after the '72
Olympics, it wasn't in her gold medal performance.
A Rulfova
is a Korbut with a full-twist which
was pioneered by Jana
Rulfova in the early '80's. I think she was the '83 World Beam
champ.
shushanova also
picked up on this trick and really made it famous.
On bars from the top
bar, she would swing to a crouching position and
then
do a layout back salto. Moukhina
did indeed perform this trick with
a full twist, I
know she did this at the '78 Worlds, I don't know if she
did
this at the '77 Europeans where she and Comaneci shared the bars
title. Hope this helps.
