I spoke to my physiotherapist today, and he said a stress fracture, if it is
completely rested, can take from 6 weeks to 3 months to heal. If she is
trying to train on it, there is no way it will heal by Atlanta.

OK, now here are a few suggestions over which pieces of floor music are
good, and which are pretty awful, and the people resaponsible for them.
These are just my opinions, and I'm sure some of you will totally
disagree, so then, lemme know!

                        The TOP 10 Cool List

10. Gemma Paz's super bouncy, hyper salsa music
 9. Liliya Podkopayeva's souped-up Barber of Seville.
 8. Lyubov Sheremeta's cutesy piece (though I forget the exact name)
 7. Gina Gogean's staid Romanian folk tune (hey, whatever works for her)
 6. Svetlana Boginskaya's sultry Spanish guitar
 5. Dominique Dawes' Malaguena number (though it might be history now)
 4. Kui Yuanyuan's darling little Kalinka medley
 3. Dina Kochetkova's stirring Hungarian violin set
 2. Svetlana Khorkina's dramatic Carmen (OK, so it's been a few years...)
 1. Mo Huilan's typewriter set (patent pending on "Adorable")

...and the bad news: The Bottom 5 of the heap

5. Shannon Miller's own violin routine. It's only been like five years
now, with the Schindler's List theme, and it can't mask tumbling deficiencies
4. Kristy Powell's horrendous Aladdin number. What were you thinking, girl?
3. Dominique Moceanu's rock medley piece. Yea, it was cute when we first
heard it...done by Mary Lou Retton. Grow up!
2. Simona Amanar's jazzed-up Nutcracker piece. Great tumbler, but what's
this garbage? And such a shame, too, since her bluegrass set was quite
nice, good for Atlanta.
1. No question. It's unanimous. No abstentions. Lavinia Milosovici's
God-awful American medley-music concoction that sounds like an early
reject from Bela Karolyi's vaults. Ugh! Why must the Romanians always do
this?

OOPS! Silly me, I forgot to include the address in my post.  The address for
the USA Gymnastics site is http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/usag/

That is the homepage.  There is a link on that page to the Trials site.

There is an article on Jaycie Phelps in the July edition of Ladies Home
Journal.  ( with Christie Brinkley on the cover) Discovered it by accident
while waiting in line.  Article was mainly about the sacrifices her family
has made in Jaycie's quest for an Olympic medal.

Shannon has tumbling deficiencies?  WHat are you smoking- she just UPGRADED
to a double layout that is great.  A double twisting front isn't exactly
below par, nor is a 4th tumbling pass of a full in.

Actually, since Sincharoen was not even in finals, I doubt it was him.

Josh Birkelbaw was the gymnast in question.

Hi!  My name is Jordynn and I have just joined this list.
I have never seriously taken gymnastics except for
a recreational course I took as a kid.  I love watching
gymnastics, though.  My favourite gymnasts are
Lilia Podkopaeva, Mo Huilan, Yuri Chechi, Dina
Kotchetkova, and Yvonne Tousek.  I guess my
"connection" to gymnastics is just that I find it fascinating!
I tape every competition on T.V. and watch them over
and over again.  I joined this list so that I can learn more
about the sport.

Dohh! Amanda's right (a quick glance at my very own words in the Gymn
digest 4-29-96(2) attributes it to Birckelbaw... proving that I have
no mid-term memory...)

Now I'm not even sure which one is nicknamed "Puff"... =) and to think
I so carefully typed "Sincharoen"...

Rachele

From 4-29-96:

Josh Birckelbaw, 11th -- attempted a full-twisting layout Tkatchev
but missed (this was the first time he attempted
it in competition); remounted to easily toss a
layout Tkatchev (despite cheers from the Cal...

Subject: Foreign exchange gymnasts?

Coaches, gym families, and any other interested folk:

A few months ago, I posted a long story describing my January
1996 visit with the gymnastics team in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
While there, I had extensive discussions with Mme. Sosna, the
team coach and head of the Khmer Gymnastics Federation.
She very desperately wants to send one or two of their
gymnasts to train overseas for a year, since their opportunities
within the country are limited and she recognizes her own
limitations as a coach.  She says she could find some money
to do it, but lacks contacts.  Thus she implored me to find a gym
in the US where her students could train.  I explained that
the hardest part would be finding a host family--although
it has been done--but that I would inquire.

So consider this an inquiry.  I think I know all of the obvious
difficulties involved here, and that it's a long shot, but I am
curious whether anyone has any creative ideas of avenues
I could explore, or experience with finding host gyms and
host families.   Please e-mail me PRIVATELY since this
is hardly a topic of concern to all 600 of us.  Thanks.

Subject: Elle & re-intro

The July issue of Elle magazine has a really nice article on Dominique Dawes,
just talking about her schedule and her life at UMaryland.  There are also a
couple of nice pictures of her too.
Also, since I never got to re-introduce myself--my name is Alexis,  I'm 17,
and from the suburbs of Philadelphia.  I just graduated from high school two
weeks ago (geez it seems longer) and will be a first year at Wellesley this
fall.  My faves are Pods, Kerri Strug, and Dina Kochetkova.  Can't wait until
the Olympics--wish I could be there!

Subject: The new Dominique Moceanu book

Well, I got the latest scoop on Dominique Moceanu's new "autobiography". Of
course, I got all the details from the Dom Digest (AJC). The book is titled
"An American Champion".  It was described by the paper as "by Dominique
Moceanu as told to Steve Woodward". They really mean that old Steve talked
to Dom, he took a lot of notes, and he wrote the book. He later showed the
manuscript to her and mom and pop, for the final ok. It costs $14.95 and it
should be in your local book stores soon.

Here is the book report from the Dom Digest:

***
One of America's top gymnastics talents has also co-authored a book. At 14,
Moceanu was the youngest gymnastics champion in U.S. history. Writing in a
upbeat, conversational style, aimed at an age group of her peers, she
recounts her remarkable rise in the sport, beginning at home in California,
and then to the renowed gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi in Houston. She
ruminates on her rigorous training schedule, on fame, and on how the
discipline  and influence of her sport have carried over into her '"normal"
life, namely school and her post-gymnastics plans.

Supplemented with 32 full-color photographs, a gymnastics glossary, and even
a typically teenage list of "A few of my favorite things" (such as country
music, and her cat, Mitzy), this Olypmics story will likely appeal to and
inspire young fans and future champions alike.

***

How does that sound? Sounds like it would be a good book for kids. Happy and
cheerful. Full of pictures. Great. Ok, somebody go buy a copy, read it and
tell me if it is as good as it sounds. :)

Speaking of Kotchetkova, what's up with her?  How did she do
at Europeans this year?  (I didn't see her results).  Dina really
hasn't done much since she did so well in the '94 worlds (except
for her gold in beam at worlds this year).  Anyone have any
insight?

I'm also in favor of Dana's idea of having a get-together of GYMNers
who will be in Boston for Trials and Congress.

Breakfast or Lunch would be a good bet for me.

Hope to see you all!

Podkopaeva's new floor is to cuts from the overture to Rossini's  opera,
"The Barber of Seville." And BTY, the series of turns she performs near the
end are called 'fouette' turns, NOT forte turns. A forte turn would be a
loud turn.
