Subject: new to list
Hi! I'm another newcomer to the list. I have 2 daughters in competitive
gymnastics. One of them just turned eleven. She is in level 10. She
informed me that she will be "testing before the elite judges" in January.
What exactly does this mean? She's apparently also learning new routines
that are compulsory for this. Can someone give me an explanation of this

Just surprised that gymnastics, though highly popular with viewing at OG
and as small article feed in the newsprint, never makes it into entertainment.
Anyone know of a time when a child on a television show was depicted as
being a gymnast? A movie? (Other than American Anthem).

P.S. This team to Sabae- I don't know why anyone is guessing about who
will make it to AA. Given a perfect outing, maybe you could speculate. BUt
we know that everyone can be less than perfect at times. Look at Shannon

Subject: internet outages
As many of you know I am working at the LISA conference this week in Monterey.
Last night, internet connectivity to Los Angeles was spotty.
This morning, a MCI hub in Denver CO lost power and switched over to
a UPS. SHortly thereafter, the batteries died and transcontinental
internet connectivity was totally botched up all day.
If your mail is wierd for the next few days, please dont be surprised !

I'm a British coach...are there any other BD's out there?
I coach womens artistic at Spelthorne gc, the one that Sonia Lawrence trains at.
WE also have a Rhythmic section, and a Sports acro section.
I have seen results and write ups of artistic and rhythmic comps, but not a
mention of sports acro. Does anyone know of any?

Hmmm... let's see. There hasn't been many gymnasts portrayed on TV or in
movies, but ...
- Julianne McNamara in "Charles in Charge" - I think she was a cheerleader...
- Drew Barrymore in some movie where she sues her parents, Shelley Long and
Corbin Bernsen - showed her getting driven to gymn class
- Darryl Hannah in "Blade Runner" - probably a stunt double ...
- episode on "Seinfeld" where Jerry goes out with Romanian gymnast who came
second at 1984 Olympics - as if ... ;^)
If there were to be gymnast characters on a television series, they
wouldn't be around much (because they'd be in the gym all the time).
Putting a gym in a studio would be pretty expensive, I imagine. Then
again, if you're in a gym enough, the last thing you would want to see when
you go home are more gymnasts or badly-portrayed gymnasts.
Our worst nightmare would be if some fool makes "Pretty Girls in Little
Boxes" into a movie or TV series.
I'd rather they show *real* gymnastics at least on the same level of
exposure as figure skating.
Hey, does anyone know if there will be another Olympic Triplecast next year?

Tickets this year for both men's & women's sessions were about $100.00 for
one person.
There is generally a meet hotel, that if you are associated with a
competing group than you can ask them to tack another room onto their
reservation for you. The hotel was $60.00 for those competing. The
congress hotel was $109.00 for participants and most of the other hotels in
the area were about $90-120.
There aren't any packages with hotels and tickets.
The nationals are definitely going to be held in Knoxville and then the
olympic trials will be in Boston in mid-june.

I remember watching the 1995 OF on CBS, and it they interviewed a USOC
bigwig as filler. He talked about the USOC's lack of money, and the
difficulties of finding a city to support a large event like the Olympic
Festival. He did mention maybe having each of the different sports
governing bodies have their own Olympic Festival, and bring in foreign
competition to liven up things. He used the swimming team as an example;
have a lot of the U.S. swimmers go up against Russia or somebody like
that. Kinda like a dual meet or tri meet kind of thing.
My idea is sort of like that. I would like to have maybe an "Olympic
Month" or something, but not all in one city. You could have a
different Olympic sport competed in a different city each weekend of the
month. One weekend, maybe Indianapolis could have the aforementioned
swim meet, plus diving and water polo or something. Also that weekend,
there could be a wrestling meet in Texas. The next weekend, gymnastics
in North Carolina, and so on. That way you spread the wealth, as they
say.
Yeah, and maybe CBS will cover ALL of the Festival, too. ;]

Aside from a American Anthem, here are a couple of other gymnastics movies:
-"Nadia" the movie from 1984
-"Flying" (stars Olivia D'Abo; I think it is a Canadian flick from around '86)
-"La Championne" (about a young Romanian girl who rises to the top; '90/'91)
-"Reach for the Stars" --- is the English version of "La Championne"
-"Dolly" which I haven't (yet) seen
-"The Gymnast" which is about a gymnast named Ginny who moves away
from home to train; from the late '70s I believe
-"The Gymnast" is from the mid '80s and was on the show "True Confessions"
it stars Julianne McNamara and Kurt Thomas
-"Gymhata" with Kurt Thomas (if that's classified as a gym movie)
As for TV, I don't really know of any series devoted to gymnastics, with
perhaps the exception of a post I saw on Usenet from someone asking about
a British show from the '70s which was about a gymnast(s).
After the '84 Olympics there were several shows which featured some of
the American stars. Can anyone add to this? It was *so* long ago... ;-)

Actually, I thought that Kristy Phillips left Bela Karoyli because she
thought that the teaching style of Bela "just wasn't her thing". She
almost "threw in the towel" for gymnastics when she found Tom and Laurie
Forster. At least that's what the commenatators said at the 1995 McDonalds
American Cup championship which Kristy Phillips won.

Subject: Injury prone!
My best friend has had a number of serious injuries. In 1992-1993 a
recurring knee injury kept her out of competition. In 1994 a broken foot
kept her out. This year she didn't compete all 8 routines because of a bad
tissue damage to her arm. She has also dislocated her elbow 4 times!
Luckily I have never had a serious injury!

Hey Gymn!
I'm sorry if this is out of date, but I was just scanning through old
digests because I was disconnected for a few weeks (problems w? AOL
server, going to college, etc.) and I noticed that Shannon was enrolling
for the year at U. of Oklahoma and Dom at U. of Maryland. Is this
temporary for Shannon? She is not eligible for a sports scholorship, but
I remember hearing that she wanted to go to Stanford for the academics.
Anyone know about this? As far as Dominique is concerned, how did she
lose the scholorship to Stanford????? Does she plan to continue at U. of
Maryland after the Olympics, or maybe still go to Stanford w/out the
sports scholorship.
Just curious.

think I was the only one.
I coach both men's and women's artistic at Lincoln Gymnastics Club ( East
Midlands Club of the Year )

I think you are referring to Kristy Powell who won the 1995
American Cup. Before she moved to Colorado she was at Cypress in Houston
(I know she was at least there in 1993). Didn't they say on the
broadcast of the cup that she was hurt in 93 and that's when she almost
gave up the sport.

Subject: NPL Spot
I'm almost sure that I was the only one who heard it today, and even that was
by accident, but National Public Radio did a spot on "All Things Considered"
today on Dynamo.
I was actualy very impressed with what a good job they did. It featured
interviews with Shannon, Marianna Webster, and Jennie T., as well as Steve
and Jennie's mom. Although they did occaisonaly drift to the height/weight
thing, most of the time they stayed focused on what really mattered (like,
the gymnasts themselves!)
So, I would just like to congratulate NPR for a job well done, as well as
Steve for doing a wonderful job defending the sport (again!).

Subject: Mary Lou and "The Book"
I turned on my car radio this morning right in the middle of an interview
with Mary Lou Retton. It seems she's in Columbus to participate in some kind of
event involving how to cook chicken (I'm not kidding!). But anyway, when I
tuned in, one of the DJs had just asked her about all the "bad press" that
gymnastics has gotten lately, evidently referring to "Little Girls in Pretty
Boxes." Mary Lou said that a book had recently come out, and she called it
"bull." She pointed out that the author had gone out and interviewed only
gymnasts who had lost or were bitter for some reason, and didn't bother to talk
to anyone with anything positive to say. She said something like, "I have
nothing but good things to say about Bela and gymnastics, and *I* certainly
didn't get a call from this journalist." She also said she would have no qualms
about letting her daughter get involved in gymnastics when she's older. At one
point, one of the DJs was going to say the title of the book, and Mary Lou
jumped in and said "don't even say it!" She obviously didn't want people to go
out and buy it and get all sorts of misconceptions about gymnastics. At the end
of the interview, the female DJ asked 2 questions: (1) What was more thrilling
for you - winning the Olympic gold or having a baby?" Mary Lou responded
"having a baby, no question about it." (2) Which was more painful - doing those
beats on the bars and other gymnastics moves or having a baby?" Mary Lou
laughed and said "definitely having a baby." I couldn't help but wonder if Joan
Ryan would think reproduction should be outlawed because giving birth is
painful! So anyway, that was Mary Lou's take on the book, and I agree with her
100%!
BTW, for anyone in the Columbus area, Mary Lou will be at Northland Mall
this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, but I don't remember
the times. I think she's also scheduled to be here next weekend at the
Convention Center to take part in some sort of promotion for Revco. I don't
know if the Revco thing has an admission price, but the cooking demonstrations
at the mall are free. I'm not sure if I'm going to go, but curiosity may get
the best of me!
