Re: training for young gymnasts
In regards to Mike Mayzaks
post regarding the "sickening" approach of
team
coaches who are just after the revenue of extra training hours from
your young kids, it should be noted that, from what I've
seen, that
competitive programs very rarely make
money and often are supported by
the recreational
program and fund raising.
Competitive teams have a
lower per hour
rate than recreation. You know,
perhaps it's just a
matter of the coach seeing
potential in you your child to be a
competitive
athlete and they're offering you the opportunity. Maybe,
it's
not as self-centered an approach as you would like to think.

Re: Gymn Troubles Suggestion
Hello again,
Been awhile since I've posted to the list. But since
Kris has started the ball rolling with short intro's I'll jump in.
My name is Gene Leone. By day I'm a PC network administrator for a
software company in Research Triangle Park in
North Carolina. During
the evenings and increasingly on weekends, my
wife and I own and
operate a small gymnastics and dance business
in Wake Forest, which
caters primarily to recreational students. I've
been a member of the
gymn-list for about a
year and a half, and while I don't post all that
often I do read everything. I do appreciate all
the info that gets
sent out. The flame wars and fluff I usually
ignore.
Oh, and Kris thinks she is old,
...well lets just say that when I
competed spring floors were rare and uneven
bars only adjusted up
and down! :)

WWW: Olympic Preview (was Re: Olympics)
Since someone brought up the
NBC Olympic web page
(http://www.olympic.nbc.com) I just thought I'd add
that _International
GYMNAST_ magazine has written Olympic previews (both
for the US and the int'l
scene) for the site.
Written as a more basic overview than what is usually
published
in the magazine, it's stuff the average "Gymn-er"
might already
know but it might be worth a peek
anyway. They will be updated (and rhythmic
added)
as we get closer to the Games.
Feel free to direct any feedback or
comments my way.
Oh and, I don't have web access so I'm not sure if
NBC has uploaded the stuff
yet or not (they said
they would last week, but you never know about these
things).
If not, it should be coming soon.

Series Requirements
In Elite, J. O. Age Group and NCAA competition,
only 2 acrobatic series are
required.
The
rules are as follows: Of the two
acrobatic series that are required, one
must have
two saltos.
The other series must have at least one salto. Three
different
saltos must be shown within an acrobatic series. (An acrobatic
series
must consist of three fast flight acrobatic elements, one of which is
a salto.)
Note that these
are the Minimum requirements.

I like this idea! I'll join in. I'm Ilene. I competed Class I
(back when there was such a thing) until 1981. I've also coached
all
levels from recreational to L9.
However, I'm currently
nothing more than a
spectator and a fan (and a graduate student
which
takes up most of my time).
I have, at times, posted some critical
things about gymnastics.
Perhaps this would be a good place to say that I
have seen great
coaching which takes gymnasts'
health into account. Under
those
conditions I think gymnastics is an exciting
and wonderful sport.
However, I have seen (and experienced) coaching styles
that make
Joan Ryan's examples look positively ordinary. I don't see any
way
to love gymnastics, want it to be good for athletes, and not
comment on the bad things that occasionally happen.
Who's
next?

Re-introducing myself...
I'm 18 years old, a freshman at Purdue
University. I was the manager
for
my high school's girls gymnastics team in
Marion, IN. I have a license
to judge gymnastics here in Indiana, but I have yet to start
judging (no
time). I would like to be a coach in the future
and I plan on going to
the local gym and working
on coaching techniques and what to look for
when
judging. This summer, Brandy
Johnson will be at the gymnastics camp
that the
local gym holds (last year it was Amanda Borden and Mary Lee
Tracy). I have never done gymnastics
myself. I began to really get
into
gymnastics around 1992/1993. This past year, even though I am away
at
school, I still went to my high school team's
"big meets" and helped them
out when I
was home on breaks. I really enjoy
watching gymnastics and
helping out with it. I have learned a great deal from this
forum.
Unfortunately, much to my dismay, I won't have access to this forum
over
the summer...I'm done for this semester on
April 30...I'm going to miss
the
"expert" opionions and all the other
"stuff" that gets posted (boy am
I going to miss out on the
"inside information" during the Olympics...but
who
knows, maybe I will find a way to get back on the forum over the
summer...Okay, I've rambled on enough...Oh, by the way,
Dominique Dawes
is my favorite American Gymnast,
Svetlana Khorkina and Mo Huilan
are my
favorite foreign gymnasts...

Hi
Mike,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes my daughter is enjoying
herself. If it was just for her she would go to
the gym everyday. I never hear any complaints from her when
it's time to get
dress and to go train. And
believe me, I'm not the kind of guy who tolerates
whining
and complaining. My philosophy is when you start something you do it
100%
and you finish it (in that case she would have to finish her session).
If
you don't like it then fine with me, we will try something else at the
next session. But right now I am very happy with her
attitude. She likes
gymnastics and she works
hard.
My question was more oriented in terms of being able to progress
in this
sport. Not necessaraly
reaching the top levels but at least being able to
perform
and have fun doing good routines.
In terms of money, it's not a big
issue. In our club (and it's probably the
case in
most of the clubs), the participating levels are financing the
competitive levels. So while we are making money with the
participating
groups, we are losing money with the
competitive groups. Of course, the
total amount of
money spend is larger (I have to include the competitions
and the costumes), but the ratio money/hours of training is
less.

I will be
posting the results of the NCAA Championships(W)
immediately
following the meet. I will try and post after the first
session,
which includes Georgia and Michigan, but
I'm not sure if I will have
time. Definately all the scores after the last session.
I will probably
post the results first, since I know a lot of people will
be anxious to hear, and then a brief summary of what
happened later on.
It will be a little tough to follow everyone but I will
focus on
the top teams contending; Bama, UGA, Utah, Michigan, Florida,
UCLA, OSU.
Practice
is today and there are 5 sessions.
I will try to attend most
of them so I'll
know about what to expect and who to watch.
Anyhow, good luck to
everyone.

Hi Again!!!!
Well, Kris said that we should introduce
ourselves
again so here goes....
Hi. My name is Laura McMahon. I live in
Delaware,
the second smallest state in the US. I am 14 years old and
being on this list w/all of these older people intimadates me at times
although
I think I have done a fairly good job of *acting* mature. I
have been doing gymnastics since I was 10 years old. I got
started
right after the 92 Olympics because my mom
saw me watch Kim Zmeskal and
I was mezmorized. I was on the Level 4 team for a whopping 3
months and
then I quit and went back to classes.
All of the girls there were so
young and the
teacher was really mean to me and I missed my friends in
my
classes.(We are all extremly close) I go 3 times a
week for about 2
hours and love every minute of
it. If you haven't happened to nootice,
Kim Zmeskal is my favorite gymnast and my idol.
Hope that that's good enough....

Re-Intro, Judging in NJ
Hi all,
I've been quiet on the forum for a
while so I thought I'd use the recent
trend as a
chance to speak up. My name is
Emily and I'm
finishing up my freshman year at
Princeton University in NJ. My home is
in
Cooperstown, NY (baseball, anyone?) I'm
thinking
about majoring in history or political science, but also will be
doing lots of science classes because I want to go to
medical school
after graduation. I have never done gymnastics (unless you
count the
year of recreational class when I was
5) :-) but I was active in dance
(ballet especially) throughout high school.
So, I'm
here in the role of "fan" but would like to add
"judge" to my
list of involvement in
gymnastics. Are there any judges or
coaches on
the forum from the New Jersey area who
might be able to tell me how I
could get involved
with judge training? I'd be really
interested in
judging women's gymnastics and help
in doing that would be
greatly appreciated.
I
will be attending the Nationals in Knoxville and the Olympic Trials in
Boston
(and spending the rest of the summer working to fund the
trips...). Hopefully some of us gymners
can meet face to face at those
events :-)

Worlds and Olympic All-Around (women)
A few months ago, someone made
reference to the fact that in the
last Olympics,
the person who won was the 5th oplace finished
from
Worlds the year before. So, just for giggles,
I'm going to compare the
1991 Worlds placings and
the 1995 Worlds placing through seventh place
and
then list what places the 1991 competitors occupied at the 1992
Olympics.
1991
1995
1) Kim Zmeskal (10th)
1) Lilia Podkopayeva
2) Svetlana Boginskaya (5th) 2) Svetlana Khorkina
3) Cristina Bontas
(4th)
3) Lavinia Milosovici
4)
Betty Okino (12th)
4) Simona Amanar
5)
Tatiana Gutsu (1st)
5) Dominique Moceanu
6) Shannon
Miller (2nd)
6)
Mo Huilan
7) Lavinia Milosovici (3rd) 7) Kerri Strug
So, if this is prophecy (grins) Dominique
would win, Mo
would be second and Kerri third.
Hey, with the olympics
as much a tossup as it appears to be at the moment, its
as good a theory as any other.

Well,
it sound like a good idea to me. I don't remember seeing intros for
a
lot of people (probably b/c they posted before I
joined). Also, I don't
think I ever posted a real intro, so here goes:
I'm 14 (15 in July), and I've been doing gymnastics for
almost two years.
At my gym (The Gymnastics Training Center of Rochester),
I'm in the
"Developmental" program, which is sort of Level 5. What I mean is
that
we work on the L5 routines, but don't compete them yet. The competition
team
has people Levels 5-10, but very few L10 girls. I live in Penfield, NY,
and I'm a freshman in high school. I competed for the school gymn team this
year- it was a
small team, in our rebuilding year, with real *gymnastics*
coaches for the first time since 1992. I've found the people on GYMN-L to
be interesting and helpful, so I hope this listserve sticks around for a long
time!

Worlds never seems to
correlate with the Olympics. The last FEMALE to win worlds
then the NEXT occuring Olympics
was Tourischeva in 1972. Retton
didn't compete in Budapest in 1983, Davidova
didn't compete in Fort Worth,
Dobre should have
walked through Seoul like a breeze, etc. I think that
the
big picture should be who will be the new star who is coming on
fast for the Olympics. I would put Marinescu
up there on the list, along
with that new
Ukrainian girl. But what about the established elite?
I
really don't think that it will easy for them to
get into the
top five.
Also, I think that
one thing is real dangerous with USA gymnastics. MOst
of the
stars and medal winners will be out of the
picture after the games. Is another
1984 in store for USA gymnastics, when
everything came to a halt as the team
rebuilt for
the future? Think about it. The top 5 gymnasts (argueably)
are
Moceanu, Miller, Strug,
Dawes, and Borden (no sepcial order given) All of
these
gymnasts will drop out of the international
seen after Atlanta. Who will
take there place?
