On June 30th on PBS, there is a special on PBS called America's
Greatest
Olympians. Mary Lou Retton was shown in the preview.

Re: Floor Music
Howdy, GYMNers:
Excuse
my lack of musical knowledge, but I do not know many titles...
One of
my picks for Best Floor Music would have to be Omelianchik's
1985 Worlds
piece with the birds chirping. It was so, well, *happy,* which was undoubtedly
enhanced
by her 'stage' presence (an example of a FINE dancer, and a finely
choreographed routine on FX). I also loved Olga's '72 music, but again
this
could be enhanced by her obvious love for
what she was doing at the time, not a
disaffected,
disinterested glaze in her eyes which is, sadly, common today.
Another Best
Floor Music goes to Shushunova's '88 Olympic
piece-and we saw her
express herself in that piece
like never before!!! Also Silivas' '89 Worlds
Swan-type piece--loved it (she was
even flapping her arms like a swan...)!!
Let's not forget Mitova's '91 Worlds funky, soulful floor music, also
*very*
well interpreted!
As for Worst
Floor Music, well, Phoebe Mills did 'Venus' before the '88 Olympics
and at the '88 Olympics she did this 'Addams Family' mix
with some goofy song
spliced in--I hated them
both!!! Perhaps a more expressive
gymnast could have
'sold' the 'Addams' mix, but
'Venus' is just too difficult to find something to
interpret. Don't get me wrong, I loved Mills on BB
and also on UB, and she is a
very accomplished gymnsast, but whoever allowed her to use these pieces
didn't
allow her to reach her full dance potential
(sound familiar...?). I also,
like
many of you on the list, am disappointed with
Milo's PUR Worlds music (did she
change the music
at Euro's?), and I *really* disliked Gogean's old
('93 Worlds)
floor music. Chusovitina's
'91 FX was a brilliant choice for her (I know it as
'The Lone Ranger,' but
I know it has a 'real' title) but she didn't express
herself
with it, so put it on my list of Worsts.
Just a
little input in an interesting thread.
Ciao,
Michele

This is what Khorki does on UB: from a front giant,a straddled
hecth
1/2 turn to catch the bar.

Here's a stupid question, but something I've always
wondered about: why is a
front giant called a front giant when your swinging
backwards. Same thing
for back giants.
I've never *done* gymnastics so there must be some
mechanical thing I am missing.

Olympic Trials commercial
I
just saw a commercial on NBC for the US Olympic trials to be
broadcast next week.
The only two gymnasts shown were Moceanu and
Miller.
Doesn't NBC know that these two gymnasts aren't even competing in
the
meet?
If I weren't on-line and didn't know about their petitions, I'd be
pretty upset to see them in the commercial and then tune
into the meet
only to discover that they weren't
even competing.
Chris.

That's NBC (or most any other network) for you. Unless they're
showing
canned footage of a meet that already occurred, they'll most likely
show shots of whoever's hot/most recognizable at the
time. This happened
with another meet shown on NBC in the past year that Miller
wasn't competing
in...strange
seeing her in the commercial, no?

Re: Articles on Women Gymnasts
I read the Ladies Home Journal article
on Jaycie Phleps and her
family
and I agree that it was done quite
well.
One question though, it says Jaycie
will *never* perform the Yurchenko
style vault.
Anyone know why?
Also, the Elle article on Dominique Dawes was
interesting too, although
too short IMO. It's nice to be able to visualize her as
a grown woman,
driving around in her own car,
living in a dorm just like other people
her
age. We've really only seen the
emotional side of Dom lately (96
Worlds coverage, 95 & 96 Nationals)
and it's not an accurate picture of
the mature
young adult she has become, so kudos to them for the
flattering
article and accurate portrayal.
I am afraid to read the upcoming
Newsweek stuff, they might as well just
cut and
paste from the job they did in 92.

The commercial I've seen lately though only shows
Dominique Dawes and Jaycie
Phelps and has
"scheduled to compete" written in small
letters... I think
someone clued them in!

Oksana Fabrichnova
I was disappointed to
read that Oksana Fabrichnova won't be in
Atlanta. She
has
some great skills and I was really beginning to enjoy her gymnastics
when she grew a bit and gained some elegance. I certainly will miss her
three back layouts on beam (it beats Miller's and Dawes'
hands down), as
well as her double double off bars (I think that's what it is!).
I
wish her luck with whatever she chooses to do in the future.
