Trials coverage?
I've gone through the ESPN and NBC listings for this
week, and can find
only one listing for Men's
finals and one for Rhythmic - when is the
women's
artistic and when is it being aired?
P.S. Maybe NBC had Miller and Moceanu on the commercial because they've
'already won'
;)

Probably because she is scared, and it is a hard vault

Does anyone have a copy of the Newsweek Magazine
from the week of June
10,1996
I believe it said the year of the Women
on the cover (about the Olympic
women) it had an
article about Shannon Miller, and Dominique Moceanu.
I was
unable to get it. I would be willing to pay
postage and the price of the

If
you ignore the bar and just look at how the body is rotating relative to
the
center of gravity, you will see that a front
giant rotates the same way as a
front somi. The same
holds true for a back giant. The
sensation as you rotate
around the bars is also
the same (at least it was for me).
By that I mean that
a back giant feels more
like back tumbling.

NYC happenings: torch, Bart&Nadia, Chelsea Pier, intro
Torch:
-----
In response to Nicole Avellina's post, I also saw the Olympic Torch when
it came by New York City. I was at Rockefeller Center in the
middle of
a crowd to the right of the stage and
didn't see it until it was almost
on stage, right
before they lit the bigger torch that was there. Everyone
was
cheering and in good spirits.
Bart&Nadia:
----------
Last
Tuesday, I had the day off and decided to drop by Macy's to check out
the special appearance by Bart and Nadia. They were promoting the new line
of Swatch watches, whose theme is Olympic legends. One is based on Nadia -
the watch band has some pictures of Nadia on bars and also
the famous 1.00
score from '76, and costs
$40.
They spoke for about 10 minutes about the Olympics and their
marriage. The
interviewer asked a question about Dominique M. (just fluff,
nothing about
the stress fracture). One interesting bit I remember is that
Bart says Nadia
did not recall their initial '76
American Cup meeting where they both won
the
competition. At a photographer's
request, Bart gave her a kiss on the
cheek on the
awards stand but Nadia only remembered, "It was a little blond
guy."
There was a little exhibition to the
theme from "Mission Impossible" by
gymnasts
from Sutton Gymnastics located in NYC.
They performed handstands,
flipflops,
tucks, layouts, - nothing crazy since the ceiling was not too high.
Later
on, two male gymnasts did a series of circles on two mushrooms while the
others did cartwheels and walkovers. Each gymnast was presented with a
Nadia
watch autographed by both Nadia and
Bart.
Afterwards, the two gave out autographed photos of themselves as
well as
signed newly-bought watches and personal
memorabilia. There was quite a
sizeable crowd.
Unfortunately, I had to answer several questions such as,
"Who's
the guy?" Bart's longtime
coach, Paul Ziert, was also onhand.
Thanks
to the list member who posted about their appearance. I would not
have
known about it otherwise.
Chelsea Pier
------------
Does
anyone in New York know anything about the gymnastics program at
Chelsea
Pier? It's been open about a year
but I hadn't actually been there
until last
week. The facilities looked great,
with foam pits, spotting
belts and at least one of
each apparatus.
Intro
-----
I may as well do an intro while
I'm here. I started gymnastics in a
junior
high club and joined my high school team in
the Bronx in my sophomore year,
competed for a few
years; competed and worked at Big Apple Games a few years,
where I met Ken Achiron, who
occasionally posts here; went to Cooper Union
college
which did not have a team although I started up a club there for a
year with a few mats and a mushroom. It's been about seven years since
I've
been in competitive gymnastics but I try to keep in touch through IG,
televised meets and this list. The strength, coordination, and
discipline
has definitely helped me in all the
other sports I've been playing since.

Olympic poll
Hello all:
Just checked out the NBC poll
pages
http://www.olympics.nbc.com/bbs/poll10.html - the question for this
week
...
"U.S. gymnast Dominique Moceanu
recently suffered a 4 inch stress fracture
in her
right leg. She will try to recover
in time for the Olympic Games,
but
doctors say competition could leave her with a broken leg. However,
the
olympic trails are next week and she most likely will
not be able to
compete. Do you believe she should be given an
automatic berth on the U.S.
olympic team?"
First, I don't think NBC
knows about the petition.
Second, I recommend you read the responses
from the June 10th poll about
Dan O'Brien, they are very interesting and
have some application to this
situation. Major difference Dan was ranked #1 in
the world going into
trials in 1992, and Dom M. is
not in the top 3.

Yes, the
2-3pm slot is women's compulsories.
Just FYI,
the two live sessions will be joining the competition in progress.
Men's
actually starts at 3pm EST and women's at 5:30.
As for the past few
USAG meets, I will be hosting the "Quick Hit" web pages
on USA Gymnastics Online during all of the artistic
gymnastics sessions.
(Apologies to rhythmic people; results will be
uploaded ASAP after each of
those sessions.) Both
compulsories and optionals will be covered with
"Quick
Hit" pages, which means that the latest standings and
competitive highlights are
uploaded after each
rotation. I am going to try to
actually upload more
often than that for Trials,
so keep your fingers crossed! The feedback to
Quick Hit has been
fantastic--thanks for everyone's "thanks".

WAG: FX Music.
The Best:
Natalia Shaposhnikova, Davidova, and Filatova's 1980 pieces.
Szabo's 1984 piece (worked for me).
Shushunova's 1986 World Cup medaly
Bogi's 1988 work
Zmeskal's
1991 'In the Groove' (It really worked for her and the
timing
of the three whips to a double tuck *with* the music is a real
feat!)
Miller's 1992 - 1994 routine (Again, she could
sell it)
Kotchekova's 1994 Worlds routine. (no wonder why she became world
champ!)
Chutsovitina's
1994 piece. (This is the best example of music for
a gymnast who can't really dance. It went straight into
the
tumbling and emphasized that- not her
choreography. Alot of
choreographers
could take lessons for those gymnasts who aren't really
dancers
but more tumblers.)
Worst:
Anything Kristie Phillips jumped about
to during 1987- 1988 (perticularly that
mess at USA vs. USSR in 1988.
That
stupid phone ringing routine that Pauca did in LA
'84.
Mary Lou Retton's 1985 American/Karloyi Cup Music (hint: see last of the
good!)
Most of the things Moceanu
'jumps about to' now!
Oh yes: Add
one more 'good piece': Milo's Godl medal routine in
Barcelona.
Again, it worked for her so well, feed into her tumbling, and
she got the
most out of it (and I would say that
the FX gold in an Olympics and a 10.0
is the most
you can get out of FX Music!)

and
Nadia Commaneci ones. I think they are both on beam and I know
Olga
was doing a handstand and Nadia was too. Anyways, they are $7.50 each
where we saw them and I think you could probably find them
at most toy
stores.
Well, Bye for now!!!!!!!!

The reason is that in a front giant your body rotates the
same direction as
it does in a front flip and the
same for a back giant.

growth plate injuries
Guys,
I know everyone is caught up in olympic fever, but any
opinions. I sent
this out a week ago, and suspect it got caught in some mail
problems locally.
My daughter has been working hard at maintaining
flexibility, and practicing
beam skills, but she
is concerned that I will make her take a year off or
quit
entirely (more for social reasons than anything else).
Thanks,

Subject: growth plate
injuries
My ten year old is supposed to be competing level 5 open next
season (after
a fun but not outstanding 5 novice year). In Feb she started complaining
about her wrists, but since she has a ganglion cyst and her
pediatrician said
the other one shows a little
insignificant soft tissue swelling, we ignored it.
Well I had her at a
sports doctor looking over her ankles and her wrists
(she
twisted both ankles right before her dance recitals). He said the
ankles
were fine, take some ibuprofen, and have fun at the recital. However
he xrayed both wrists, and said there is growth plate injury
in both wrists,
take three weeks off the wrists
and come back...
Well, she is working on week one of no bars, no
vault, and no tumbling. She
is doing tramp, beam (no hands), and floor (dance, leaps,
aerials). However,
I am of the
opinion that she may have to give up competitive gymn,
she just is
not genetically as strong as the other
girls on team. She will be
devastated,
but bars are hard for her anyway, and
now she will be taking a month off
(at least), and
I am not willing to risk bone development on a sport.
SO am I being
overprotective? Do any of you
coaches or parents out there
have any experience
in dealing with this? Knowing that
this growth plate
injury happened in February,
could resolving it actually help her bars?
DO these things actually really
heal? Is her lack of upper body
strength
be partially responsible?
Thanks
sheri

Kim Kelly Article
As some of you know, I live in the Lehigh Valley of
PA, about 15 minutes
away from Parkettes. The local paper ran a rather lengthy and
in-depth
article about Kim Kelly. In it, she gives her opinions about the
trials
(both '92 and '96) tells about some
incidents and college, along with
some other
stuff. Although it is very Pro-Kim
(being told from her
point of view, obviously) I
found it rather interesting and surprisingly
thorough. If any of you want a copy of the article
(over e-mail) please
send a little note saying
you'd like me to foward it to you to this
address: 73357.1271@compuserve.com
The article also
mentions that NBC followed her around for a day this
years
and is going to have a segment about her during their broadcast of
trials.
One last thing--most of us really don't
like Amanar's new floor music
(the
techno-Nutcracker thing) but I was watching old tapes and Kristie
Phillips
used the same music for her 1986 (I think) floor. Go figure.
I really liked Kerri
Strug's routine that she had on floor for '93
when
she was at Dynamo's. I think it suited her style better than
any of her
other routines.
Between Strug, Larissa Fontaine, Chelle
Stack, and Jamie Martini, I
think we have every
gym in the US covered. Maybe they
could all get
together and help USAG with the coaching
techniques...

Olympic Trials Commercial, Nadia
Hi Everyone!
Ok, first, when I
was watching the diving trials (since I've gotten my
tickets
and travel stuff for Atlanta, I've been obsessed! I'll watch, read or
buy practically anything that has to do with the Olympics)
there was an ad
for the gymnastics trials, and it
showed Dominique Dawes, Jaycie Phelps,
Kerri Strug and I think also Amanda Borden. I guess someone
finally did their
homework
and checked to see who was actually competing....
I didn't get to go
to see Nadia and Bart at Macy's this past week, but I went
to see Nadia in February at Lord and Taylor. She was there promoting Danskin.
She
performed a little on the beam and floor and signed autographs. Did she
and Bart perform themselves this time? I had a really good
spot, right in
from of the beam, and although she
only did simple moves, (I think the most
difficult
thing she did was a back walkover) she had her legendary perfect
form, beautiful lines and, well, perfection. She's beautiful
to watch,
especially so close. It was such a
thrill to see the gymnast I idolized when
I was young, right in front of
me. Paul Ziert was there with her and when I
got up there to get her autograph, and he wouldn't shut up!
All I wanted to
do was say one or two sentences to
Nadia, like what an influence she was for
me, the
usual stuff, and I barely got to. He started talking when I showed up
there with an old IG for her to sign, and asked me how long
I've been getting
it, etc. I started to tell Nadia
how I had the picture she was signing for me
(THE floor pose) in a poster
when I was little and now Paul couldn't believe
I was old enough to
remember Nadia when she competed. (I'm 24 but look about
17, especially
when I'm not dressed up in my teacher outfits). He went on
saying how then gymnastics has been good to me.(I should
have showed him my
permanently swollen ankle and
cracked my back for him) Anyway, it was a great
experience,
and I hesitated to post about it then, because I know it seems
cheesy to go see the greatest gymnast sell bodysuits. I've
been to baseball
card shows where you have to buy
something, they are mean to you, they shoo
you
away after 2 seconds, but this was not like that at all. Besides, who
ever thought then that you would someday be able to see an
Olympic champion,
especially one from Romania and
go up and talk to her ? Anyway, I'm sorry
this is so long,
I didn't plan for it to be................Ellen

1) I would like to thank Beth for the
Update on the Belorussian and Russian

gymnastics. (Like the info about Dina's leg injury, particularly.)
2)
Anyone else see there system as the 'way to go' for tema
selection? I don't
doubt what they do is harsh,
but it seems that they are looking for results.
I do doubt, that regardless
of their talent, any former USSR nation will
be
atop the platform when the chalk settles. Thus, ending a dynasty of
sorts in both the men and women's gymnastics history.
3)
This is kind of an aside, but I was wondering what will
happen to Russian
athletics (not that it's a high
priority compared to other problems in the
country)
if the system went back to communism? There was talk of rebuilding
the round lake facilities. Anyone know what is up with them? Are they state
controlled
again, or privatized?

more per
hole. To demonstrate my
commitment, I have sponsored myself at $1.00 per hole and
strive to play
100 holes. Below
is a pledge form
which you can e-mail or fax back
to me.
Whatever amount you decide to pledge will not be due until two
weeks
after the golf marathon is played. At
that
time, you will receive a letter informing you of the number of
holes I played and your total contribution
