TV Alert (Canada)
The documentary show "Rough Cuts" on CBC Newsworld channel will
be
airing a one-hour gymnastics documentary.
The program will
be aired Monday Feb.26 at
10pm EST and Saturday Mar.02 at 9pm EST.
Check your local listings, as
usual...
>From the CBC Newsworld web
page:
>>"Competitive Gymnastics"
>>(Premiere)
>>Woodfall Comm. (John Thomson/Beth Stewart)
>>Pressures
on tiny athletes
>>Feb.26 & Mar.02
It sounds like
it might be the usual anti-gymnastics (eating disorders, etc.)
though I'm told it focuses on Kim Allen of the Omega Gym
Club in Vancouver
preparing for Elite Canada held
December '95 in Toronto.

Oops! I meant to say Saturday, February

Sorry for any confusion! Time is going by so quickly that I'm
lost
track of the date!!

NBC's "stride to glory"
Well, I think that is what it was
titled. It was a salute to American
african-americans
who competed in the olympics and won medals.
Anyhow,
shame on NBC. While they managed to mention Charles Lakes for
Seoul and
Dominique Dawes in Barcelona, they completely ignored
Betty Okino, who made event and all-around finals. *sigh* If they
were gonna do it, they could've been complete.

Please make note of the following
information, some of which was not
widely
circulated previously and is in effect currently.
1. The following
change on Pommel Horse was approved by the JOPC at
the
May Nationals in Oakland Ca:
In Class 3
Pommel Horse, the Stockli B required skill has
been
changed to: "Any 3 hand-placement skill
on 1 pommel (the same
pommel), of B or greater
value, performed behind the back." Examples
of
some skills that satisfy this requirement are: 2 pommel loops,
Stockli B, Bailie, 3/4 Bailie, or pommel circle. A Russian on 1 pommel
does not satisfy this requirement since it is performed in
front of
the body.
Additional
clarifications:
1. There is a general requirement in optional pommel
horse that all 3
parts of the horse must be
worked. Failure to satisfy this requirement
results
in a 0.2 deduction from execution. To satisfy this
requirement,
at least 1 whole part of "A" value must be performed on
that part of the horse.
General
1. In
Class 3 and Class 4 competition, an exercise that is short parts
will incur a 0.8 deduction from execution for each missing
value part.
This is not the case for Class 1 or Class 2 competition.
Missing value
parts in Class 1 and Class2 will
result in a deduction in "difficulty"
as
per FIG. There is no deduction in execution for missing value parts
in Class 1 or Class 2.

I'm not going to make too much commentary, but there are
a few things
I wanted to say.
1) Jennie Thompson looks good, but
she has a lot of form stuff to clean
up.
However, I've got to say she had some terrific tricks, most
notably
that bar dismount. Y8ikes...
2) No doubt I will get flamed for this,
but the more of Steve Nunno I
see, the
more I dislike him. It seems like he does everything for the
sake of
the camera. The athletes are on display, not him...
3) I finally got
to see Alecia Ingram. I liked her alot.
Nice form, nice
grace. As for most of the atheltes
here, I'd like to see them at
full difficulty.
I know most weren't

Peactree
Just a few comments about this
competition:
Mina Kim- I thought that she looked good. I wonder what would have happened
had she not fallen on beam?
Does anyone know what
Jenny Thompson's floor routine was worth?
It seeme4d
that it wasn't even worth a
9.825- how could the judges think of that score.
The Dynamno team is full fo
depth. WOW
Shannon looks
good and happy, but it seems that Steve doesn't seem to think
that she is able to win the Olympics.
I am going to
kill Maura Driscoll. How does she
breathe? She is the most
unknowledgebal person I have ever
seen.
Just my 2 cents,

Nadia in New York
I, too, heard about this PR thing, and happened to
find out that my gym
rented a beam to Lord and
Taylor to use for the exhibition. A
particular
little story about the exhibition which
I thought everyone might like was
that during the
show, someone told Nadia to stand by the beam, and she
thought
they meant "sign the beam", so she took out her marker and signed
the
beam in giant letters. I heard about this when, on Friday
night, I was
walking by the beams and I happened
to see that one of my gym's beams managed
to end
up with a giant "Nadia Comaneci" signature on it!

Jennie Thompson's Vault
I just finished watching the Peach Tree
Invitational and I was wondering what
her vault
was scored as. Maura Driscoll, who can never be counted on for
accurate information, seemed to think she was doing the Kristeava (I know I
spelled
that one wrong.) vault, but the twist came far to late
for it to be
technically correct. Is the vault
Jennie did harder or easier? Does anyone
know if
that is the same vault she did at the American Classic?
Thanks,
LeeAnn
PS I was amazed to see that Maura Driscoll
is a much better interviewer than
commentator.

John Naber commentary at Kodak Invite
JN's
comment that Shannon Miller was "an inbred competitor" had me
ROTFL! (He meant "inborn
competitor".) I like him
though, as the
nonexpert
commentator, he's much more unobtrusive than John Tesh
(ick) or
Dan Hicks.
