Growth plate Injuries-some general suggestions
Two thing
alert me to suggest that the 10 year old gymnast with a wrist
ganglion plus growth plate injury may need to look at her
training program.
Both problems are evidence of overuse. A ganglion can be
due to chronic
sprains of the wrist or a weakness
in the joint capsule or tendon sheath
that causes
a continous secretion if synovial fluid. The growth
plates are
situated close to the joints and
overloading or overusing the wrists
especially
during tumbling vaulting and bars may cause irritation and
injuries to these areas of bone that at 10 years old are not
yet fused.
A number of options are open to the gymnast with these problems, that are
not that
uncommon.
1 Rest until the pain and inflammation has resolved, as suggested
by the
sport doc.
2. Gradual return to
activities with a modified program that allows for
recovery.
ie alternate days rather
than daily workouts, ice post workout,
use of
wrist supports for tumbling and vaulting (you've seen some of the
athletes at the national level use them during
competition)
3. Thorough specific warm-up to fully stretch the joints
before training and
competition - never never miss
4. Participate in a long term strengthening
and conditioning program for the
forearms and
upper arms- but not by weight lifting!
Always treat swelling with respect
especially in a child it is an indication
that the
body does not like what it is subject to.
Growth plates in girls fuse approx 2 years after puberty so this little 10
year old has some time to go yet. ALWAYS listen to you
family physician or
sport doctor, get a referral
to a physio to assess each specific problem as
no two situations are the same. What works for one may not
for another. This
is only
an overview of some aspects of these injuries not designed to
replace a GOOD MEDICAL ASSESSMENT.

PREDICTIONS ON WHICH PEOPLE WILL MAKE THE MENS TEAM?!?
IF
SO I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THEM WITH SOME BRIEF EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY
YOUR CHOSE WHO?
I THINK THE MEN WILL DO BETTER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT!!!!

FLIP FLOPS AND MUSHROOOMS
Flip flops are the
same thing as flick flacks and a mushroom is gymnastics
tool
that is used for beginning gymnasts to pracitce for
pommel horse. Its
name comes from it appearance only it does not have any
pommels. Anyone
have any other questions feel free to ask, I am sure someone
on this list
can answer them.
