Proposed changes in 1997 Code (Women)
No one's brought up one of the
good points about the 9.0 Start Value
(International rules). That is, the gymnasts can get bonus from
extra D's
or E's OR from bonus connections. Right now, with the current code,
the
gymnasts start at 9.4 and are restricted to .3
bonus in extra D/E and .3 in
bonus
connections. I think the
"loosening" of the restriction of which
category
the bonus can come from will make more interesting routines.
For those
of you concerned about the JO (level 8-9-10) and college levels,
the committees will meet and decide how they may modify the
new code. So
don't
panic! There are still a lot of
unknowns.

rhythmic gymnastics questions
Hi! I'm Karen. Mother of a gymnast from
the gym formally
known as Karolyi's.
My husband usually sends my notes for me but he is
fishing
in Canada. So please excuse me if this note gets screwed up.
I'll do best I
can.
My daughter, Kirsten, has been told she has patellar tendenitus and
Osgood Schlatter symptoms in both her knees. She is seven
and
experiances a lot of
pain in the knees. Since vaulting may prove to be
too
much for her knees, we are looking for other ways for her to keep
up with what she loves. She is flexible, lean and very graceful on the
floor
and beam. She is also beautiful and very pleasent to watch. She
has
expressed an interest in rhythmics so this why I have
some
questions about the rhythmic gymnastics.
Kirsten
has competed one season level 4 and one season level 5 and was
training for her second season of level 5.
Is there a
level for the little girls to compete?
What are there ages for these
levels?
Is rhythmic any worse on the knees?
How do they train?
Are
there any gyms in the Houston area that train little rhythmic
girls? {we are in the Spring area,
FM1960 and 45. just a mile from the
old Karolyi gym}
Does anyone know if the man who bought the
Karolyi gym is planning on
bringing
rhythmic to the gym?
I have so many questions but I have to get one of my
sons to a T-Ball
game. So any other items anyone
could tell me about rhythmics and the
knee problems affecting my daughter would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kirsten's mom

97 CODE
hi, I'm
really surprised that everyone is still talking about the code
changes but since they are I thought I join in again. I
think what I was
trying to say was it wasn't so
much the lowering of skills but what they
lowered.
I agee with front tumbling
being lowered I'm tired of seeing
people do that
and get scores the same as the more difficult tumbling.
But a double Pike
worth the same as a full in on floor. I don't think so.
And repeated skills being devauled.
What about Chainey Humphrey's awesome
repetition of skills on the high bar. By the way I'm a Chainey Humphrey
fan I love
him! I think they ought to have gymnast that are doing or
attemping the skills have input on
what should be devauled. Who's ever
making these decisions probably have never attempted the
skills before.
Many women gymnast are doing triple fulls
on floor but I still think it's
a difficult skill.
How about rewardind the one who touches the
ceiling
when she does it. That will get rid of the
fluff.
I still have to disagree about injuries. I think there's alot more
injuries in the
sport you just never hear about them and the gymnasts
just
secretly go on there own way.
What do you think about having the same
scoring system as ice skating on
beam and floor? Divide the scoring into technical and
artistic? Just an
idea. I still love gymnastics no
matter which way it goes. Hi Rick.

Re: 97 CODE
I have to agree about disliking the fact that some skills
are being vauled at
the
same difficutly level even though to perform some is
easier than to
perform others. For example, to
have a double pike and a full-in on floor
have the
same rating is ridiculous.
One way to solve this would be to add new
difficulty ratings. Why just have
it go up to an E
level skill. I think it would be more accurate to increase
the number of skill levels, and have a more precise way of
differentiating
between the level of difficulty of
the skills instead of clumping them all
together.

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 24 May 1996 to 25 May 1996
I have some old
gymnastics tapes that were recorded on Beta, but since my
Beta has long since died, the tapes have
collected dust. They are from 87
and 88 for
the most part and include the 87 Worlds and 88 Olympic trials
and various other meets. If anyone with a Beta could dub them for
me
onto a VHS, they could keep the Beta tapes. I
would be willing to pay for
all costs and time.
Thanks!

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 24 May 1996 to 25 May 1996
I'm one of those people
who firmly believes the scoring system used in
gymnastics should be changed. When Nadia got her 10's, that should have been
the
signal that the system had serious limitations. An intelligent public was
thinking the ultimate had been achieved. No room for
improvement?
Since that time the scoring system (in an understatment)
is unmercifully
unjust. I firmly believe the
difficulty of an optional routine should be
judged
in a separate catagory and added to the outcome of
the former
catagories.
Yes, then it would be possible to obtain a score relative to your
potential to perform more difficulty. As it stands, we are
cramming more and
more difficulty into the span of
those elusive final 2 tenths 9.8 vs 10.0.
It's
not working folks...wake up!!! More
difficulty = higher score. Smell
the
coffee!!!

Sweat, and stoop on
Just a coupla quick points.
In Australia, we have a show
called "Sweat", which is a soap opera set at a
fictional
sports academy. Last night, the
episode concentrated on
gymnastics, and included
just about every cliche our sport has, including
:
* the older, taller, more mature gymnast
struggling to do the Comaneci
dismount from bars
she once found easy,
* the smaller, younger
gymnast suggesting to the media that the older
gymnast
possibly suffered from an eating disorder,
* the
smaller gymnast clutching her teddy bear as a security blanket, and
* the TV reporter suggesting to the head of the academy that
intense
workouts stunted the growth of gymnasts,
with the response being that as
soon as they
retire they undergo a growth sport (Joan Ryan, where are you??!!)
I
was so appalled I couldn't even wait for the credits to see who doubled
for the actors, and turned it off.
Regarding the
stoop on, I think this is a coaching issue. Yesterday I
attended
a judging course which occurred concurrent with Level 5 and 6
activities testing, which I got to see most of. Activities testing
determines whether a gymnast moves up to that level. For both levels, a
squat or stoop onto the low bar to reach the high bar is a
compulsory
element, but is clearly a preparatory
move for a harder transition at Level
7 and 8. My point being, perhaps some coaches
can't get past the prep move
because it's so
easy? In any case, I'm glad the FIG
has taken it out,
because there's nothing that interupts the flow of a bars routine more than
the stoop on low bar

Gym on Aus TV
Last night on 'Sweat' half of the show was focused on
gymnastics. The show is about a sports academy
and the
athletes training there as olympic
hopefuls. It was
interesting to see gym on Tv
in this way.
One of the gymnasts at the academy, who is about 17, was
having trouble with a bars dismount.( toe on
half) She was
frustrated because she could usually do the
move fine.
A 10 year old gymnast also at the academy was
being
interviewed by a TV station. When the item was
shown on TV
it turned out that the interviewer continued
taping after
the interview had 'finished' and the girl said
some things
about starvation diets and also revealed that
some of the
older girls had weight problems. She then let
it slip that
one girl, the state champion, hadnt
had her period for
months. All this went to air and the girl who
was state
champion (the girl at the beginning) got really
upset.the
academy also got bad press because of
this.
Later in training, Tats (state
champ) wanted to prctice the
dismount again. The coach said no and that she
didn't need
it for the upcoming state champs. Tats went
ahead and did it
and sprained her ankle on landing.
At this point Tats was still
refusing to talk to the younger
gymnast. The coach came and gave her a talk
about how she
should have listened to her and even though she
couldnt
compete at the states because of her injury,
the team still
needed her. The coach asked her to help coach
the 10 yo, and
finally they resolved their differences.
I really enjoyed the show for what it was. There was some
good gymnastics in it too. Some of the acting
wasn't to
flash but at least the injury scene was no
where near as bad
as the one in "Reach for the Sky"
That really is funny.....!
Btw 'Sweat' is filmed at WAIS and the gymnastics adviser is
Liz Chetkovich.
