PEACHTREE/ KODAK/INTRODUCTION
In reply to Leeanne's
question re Jennie Thompsons vault.
She executed a yurchenko
- back layout =BD twist off which has a Start Value
of
9.7 in the Intl code. An easier vault than the one she would have
nominated a yurchenko =BD layout
front s/v of 9.9. This vault was obvious=
as
the back =BD , she was still turning as she hit the
floor. The turn is
supposed to be before(or at a pinch in the first =BD ) the salto.
I am surmising that she called the 9.9 vault
because of the scores posted.
9.525.
An unlikely score from a start value of 9.7
with her amplitude
problems as well as body
form.
There is also a penalty of 0.3 for doing a vault other than the
one=
nominated.
Steve Nunno
was he really wearing a microphone?
I was surprised to see such a recent
USA competition down here in New
Zealand. Its nice to keep up with what is going
on in Olympic Year. =20
Did Mina Kim really do a yurcheko
pike 1/1.
I am looking forward to seeing
more.
This is my 2nd posting in a week so I will introduce myself. I am a Brevet
Judge
living in Christchurch New Zealand.
I coach Elite and Levels female
gymnasts as
well as judge. I am NZ's Judging
Director. I am also an
administrator and ex
gymnast. My daughters have also
done gym so I think I
have covered all
angles.
I judged Vault at the Worlds in Sabae and
Brisbane recently and have held my
brevet since
1980.

special requirements
Hi all,
Recently I
had a conversation on the next code of points with
a
GB National Judge. She had heard that next year the
deduction
for special requirements will be increased from 0.1 to 0.5.
This was to
encourage special requirement to be worked at all FIG
events.
In the UK a full spin on beam for example is sometimes
ommitted from the routine because the gymnast falls
off. The coach
then weighs up the loss of 0.5 gainst the loss of 0.1 for not putting
in the special requirement. I persoanlly
think this could be a
good thing. Anyone out there
heard anything along these lines?
Barry.

A double back under JO rules is
a D. Collegiate gymnasts are
judged
under level 10 rules with some minor
variations.

This might be an interesting topic for any of you
in academia:
I've always been curious to see a study done on the
handedness and
turning/spinning direction topic particulary with respect to gymnastics
versus figure skating.
The fs community seems to believe that if
you're
right-handed, you must jump & spin
counter-clockwise, and vice-versa.
The gymn
community generally believes this to be ridiculous.
I haven't seen any
academic-based "proof" to this.
Certainly, there have
been many threads
about this topic here in the GYMN-L (see digests in archives)
as well as in rec.sport.skating.ice.figure. Plus, you could also look
at athletes in other sports like swimming (which way they
turn at the wall),
diving, and hockey, as well as
non-athletes and their natural turning
directions.
Since
I'm involved with both gymn & fs,
I'd be happy to provide further
information &
insights via e-mail.
Regards,
Grace

Interesting--last year (my daughter was 10 at
the time) my daughter's school
had the
Presidential Physical Fitness test.
My daughter go the second
highest number of pull-ups for her school--beaten only by
one person,
another gymnast from her team (who did
2 more than she did). Both girls
did
8 more than the highest ranked boy. Whoever said gymnastices
was a sissy sport?

Here's the thing that most sticks out in my mind...
Did
anyone else notice how incredibly NEGATIVE Andree Pickens'
coach, Debbie Kaitschuk(?) was
after her floor routine? The camera
did
not show her face, but the mike picked up her voice
hammering Andree
for watering down her last tumbling run.
It
really bothered me...

Thank you and apparatus and home country advantage
I
would like to thank all of the people who sent information
about IG delivery. It really helped.
I have a question about having an advantage at a
meet.
In Puerto Rican newspapers, many of the writers talk about how
the gymnasts from Puerto Rico will do well at Worlds because
they are
familar with
the equipment. I recall that
similar statements for the
Olympics were made by gymnasts at the US
Championships.
Is there is an advantage to be use to the equipment at a
meet or is this something that the writers use to make the
story
interesting? I know in skating sometimes people
talk this. At the
Goodwill
games in 1994 in Russia
many people wre talking about the
ice.
Why
do people say that teams benefited from high scores anyway
just because the event is in their own country anyways. I know
gymnastics
is not track and field where a photo finish usually decides
any problems. There are problems in track and field, but for example, why
should Austraila expect to finish in the top three teams
in the year
2000?

Help with AAU
Hi Everyone,
I am having a hard time
understanding exactly what purpose AAU is. I know
it
stands for Amateur Athletic Union.
But what is it? Where they apart of
USAG? Do they have levels like USAG? Are they judged like USAG? Do they
use
the same Code of Points. Some people I have talk to said they are the
international gymnist. Could
someone please explain it to me.
Thanks,
