I just found out, kind of late notice, but Friday January 26 at 9:00 am on AM
Northwest, they are interviewing some gymnasts that are competing at the
Reese's Cup. Thought people might be interested.

In Illinois, at men's high school gymnastics competitions, we used
a FX strip instead of a 40x40 (it's something like a 5x52). Some high
schools would cover their strips with panel mats that alternated colors
between panels (like red, white, red, white). This made it really
strange to spot landings on skills. Nothing like a good optical illusion
while you're trying to judge the distance to the floor.

Well just to add my thoughts about this, I once competed at a gym whose FX
mat was light pink, with tiny white lines criss-crossing through it. Well,
how I do my handstand double piroutes---I pick a point in the floor to
concentrate on (it really helps) and I can stay up longer. (I also do this on
beam, with handstands & planches) Well at this floor, I couldn't find one
focal point, and the floor mat looked like a 3-D image!!! It was strange.
Then, when I was tumbling, it looked really strange seeing these white lines
go past!!!!

To Grace and anyone else who was wondering,
The two irc items I was talking about yesterday were completely
separate. The channel #gymnastics! that I registered on Dalnet can only
be accessed through Dalnet. I was just letting everybody know that
there was a gym channel on Dalnet, and that I am on fairly regularly, if
people want to talk about gym.
The weekly IRC gymn talk can only be accessed through Efnet. (I believe,
but no one has confirmed it.)
By the way, thanks Joe! It's amazing that Melinda can be such a
consistent beamer at her age! Thank her for me, and wish her good luck
in her quest for the games of 2000!

The air dates of all the events should be checked locally in your television
directory. The tiny little sport of gymnastics is always threatened with
more popular shows and sports! In fact, the Reese's Cup almost didn't happen
this year, due to lack of live audience participation (low ticket sales), and
lack of athlete interest.

Can anybody send me info on any newsgroups or gymnastics forums I can access?
I am just learning to "surf", so type slowly to me! :)

Subject: Olympic Coach/Kelli Hill

I am responding to the gentleman who wrote about Kelli Hill being the
head coach for the US Olympic team. I kinda forgot all about her. I
like her very much and think she is an excellent coach. It would be nice
to see her as the head coach. What got me thinking, was the point that
you made about the gymnasts she has (Dawes, Webster, Fontaine,
Thomasek). In my opinion, the only one that will be on the Olympic team
is Dawes. I haven't seen the others compete in quite awhile. They have
to contend with Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique
Dawes, Kerri Strug, Shannon Miller, Kim Zmeskal, Jaycie Phelps, Kristie
Powell?(1995 McDonald's Cup AA winner), and several others that were on
the Sabae team and those that finish out the top 15 in the US. I think
the 1996 US team is going to be an "older" team (Miller, Dawes, Borden,
Chow, Zmeskal, Strug) with a couple younger girls (Moceanu, Phelps-just a
little younger than the "old-timers", Kulikowski, etc.). I am expecting
a very mature team going into the Olympics, half of which being
second-time Olympians.

Hi There,

Quite right. Kevin and Rita have been divorced since 1993.
Kevin now lives in Minnesota where he is originally from. He
still coaches at a few clubs in the local area just to keep his
hand in the sport. Also does a little consulting from time to
time. My understanding is that he is quite happy out in the
country with his horses!

US Olympic Head Coach. Don't get me wrong, I love Kelli Hill. I think
she is a great coach, but I think Bela should be the head coach in Atlanta.
Nobody has the experience he has, and he can get the most out of gymnasts in
high pressure competitions like the Olympics. I think Kelli Hill should be the
assistant. She would provide a lighter side to the coaching staff, which is
also important. I think her and Bela would make a great team. However, Bela,
in my opinion is the only one for the job.

This may be a stupid question, but are the Atlanta Olympics going to
have the same rules as the Barcelona games? Specifically, the new life rule?

Perhaps I misstated what I meant here. No they are not different for level 8.
However according to the bonus charts for beam a sideward skill or forward
skill going into(in combination with) a backward skill, i.e. punch front,
flic flac; aerial, flic flac, etc. are considered bonus combinations.
According to the chart, the sideways skill of A or B difficulty must
directly connect to a skill of C value or higher for that bonus to be
appicable. In which case a cartwheel, gainer layout would get .1 bonus. Now
round-offs themselves are an entirely different matter. One can not receive
bonus for skills in combination with round-offs. At least not if it's C value
skill combo. like say RO, layout step-out. That would not get bonus. Of
course neither does your run of the mill FF, layout. My understanding of the
round-off thing is that they disallowed bonus for it in combo because of the
preponderous of round-off entry dismounts. They wanted to make it tougher to
receive bonus for dismount connections. If I'm wrong, please feel to correct
me, but I looked at my bonus charts and that's what they say to me.

Ok, I see. I think we were missing each other because I thought the
sideward or forward skill has to be combined with another sideward or
forward skill (for ex., front aerial-side aerial) -- not a backward
skill -- for bonus, as is the case in elite. Unless there's a counter
element (or direction change), as in your example of punch front-flic
flac, but that's a separate category of bonus altogether (and it also
requires both elements to be flight elements). If Level 9 allows for
sideward elements to be combined with backward elements for bonus,
that's another story.

Subject: Bela and Bogi

I was just wondering about the problems that might arise by Bella
coaching Bogi. I don't think I'd wonder if it was a coach who tends to
be a little less ... "conterversial" or someone not pretty much a sure
thing for a coaching position (possibly head) on the Olympic team. Isn't
there some sort of conflict of interest to be coaching girls who will be
competing for different countries when your going to be coaching for one
of the countries. To top it off one of his stars, Kim, was at one time
one of the rivals of Bogi and now he's coaching them both.

I'm not an expert of gymnastics so I'd like to hear from people who know
a little more about the sport and coaching.

selection. USA Gymnastics picks whomever they choose. By the way, Mary
Lee Tracy would be a great choice in addition to Kelli Hill.

I think Bela should definitely be the head coach in Atlanta. He will
most likely (IMO) have three gymnasts on the team (Dominique M., Kerri
Strug, and Kim), he has the most experience, and his presence on the
floor has proved crucial in the past. Although Marta is a great coach
also, it is essential that there be someone out on the floor who can
bring the girls together as a TEAM. I see Kelli Hill or Mary Lee Tracy
doing an excellent job in that respect. While I'm at it, I might as well
make my prediction for the team itself-Dominique M., Dominique Dawes,
Shannon Miller, Kim Zmeskal, Kerri Strug, Jaycie Phelps, and Amanda
Borden. About Amanda, I think she's adds some much needed leadership
along with great gymnastics. This would be an "old" team, yes, but their
experience and maturity will make them hard to beat. Not to mention that
individually every one is a potential medalist.
