Introduction
Hi -
I have been lurking for awhile
now, but feel I should introduce myself.
My
name is Sarah and I'm from Washington
State. I'm 22 (almost 23 !), married
for 4 months now :),
and I work as a system administrator and database
developer.
I also have plans to attend law school next fall. (2 years in the
"real world" was enough to make me want to go back to
school...) As far as
gymnastics background, I took
four years of recreational gymnastics when I
was
in elementary school/junior high, blew out my knee in a ski race and
haven't been in the gym since. However, I am a big fan and
have followed
gymnastics and the
national/international scene since the early '80s. As far
as other athletic interests - I ran track and cross country
and played
competitive tennis in high school and
college (still run the occasional 10K
and play
tennis recreationally), and I have also ridden and shown horses
competitively since I was 6 years old. And in my
"spare" time I love to read,
especially
mysteries, and write poetry. I have really enjoyed reading gymn
(I've
gone back to read a lot of the older digests), and look forward to
contributing in the future.

Re: Eating Disorders...
As a new poster, I hate to jump in the middle
of this discussion, but it is
an issue I can
relate to very personally, so I will anyway.
>Hmmm. Since we can't ethically do a true
experiment, the next best thing
>might be to
compare rates of eating disorders in sports that require
>attention to detail, striving for perfection, obsessive
behavior, _and
>extreme thinness_ with sports
that require the first three but not the
>last. I nominate running. (I was going to nominate power lifting
which I
>actually think is a better comparison,
but I thought some of you would find
>it
unfair). Does anyone out there have
access to information on rates of
>eating
disorders among runners? Power
lifters? Swimmers?
As far as runners go - I have seen statistics,
which I will try to dig up,
but I believe the
number for competitive runners is startlingly high. (At
least
it was startling to me.)
As a former competitive runner, I would attest to
the fact that it is
certainly a large
problem.
But I would tend to agree with the premise that eating disorders
may have
more to do with the type of person you
are than the sport you are involved
in. I offer
this example. I attended an elite eastern college, where the
student body was largely composed of vary academically
talented individuals
who tended to fit the profile
offered above - perfectionists, attention to
detail,
at least mildly obsessive, very driven individuals. (I was/am one
myself). You had to be to succeed academically. Well, while
I was there,
eating disorders became a major issue
after a number of surveys and studies
showed that
the number of female students with eating disorders was between
25 and 30%. That's not just athletes
- that's female students as a whole.
Responses to surveys seemed to
indicate that people who had a low tolerance
for
perceived imperfections extended that to their bodies as well. Anyway,
I'm
sorry this has gotten so long, but I tend to agree with the view that the
type of people who become elite gymnasts have much in common
with those
people who are prone to develop eating
disorders. Thanks for listening - I
hope this has
been clear enough.

Pod coming to Subway, and more...
Hi everybody! Thanks for all the messages regarding
the Subway World
Gymnastics Challenge. I'll try to respond to them all
here.
Sorry for my absence last night - I went to the movies. I also spent last
night
scanning in some photos that I picked up from CGF. They are now
posted
on the Subway Profiles page. Some
of the photos BTW were taken by
Dory Dynna.
Now... for the good stuff. While at CGF they told me that Podkopayeva and
some other Ukranians will be coming to Hamilton for the Subway
World
Gymnastics Challenge immediately after the Chattanooga, Tennessee frolick.
In the immortal words of Homer Simpson,
"WOO HOO!". I can't remember if
I've already
mentioned it, but Pod is featured on the Subway poster. I
don't
have the poster myself, but it looks like all the Ontario clubs got
one. I'll ask
about the sales possibility if there is sufficient interest.
CGF was
also expecting the US women's delegation yesterday afternoon. I'll
find
out today. Just hang on a bit,
ok? Nobody knows why they've taken so
long.
Roza or Rosa?
Anyways, I have pictures somewhere of her competing at '91
Worlds,
so she couldn't have been 15 in 1993 - must be someone else.
I was
also going through my gym photo buckets and found a nice photo of
what I think is Marleen Lavoie
from 1991 Elite Canada. It's on
the
Profiles page. If it's not
her, please let me know ASAP.
The Subway WGC will be presented by
Alberto VO5 on CBC pm Saturday December
2 from 3:00 to
5:00pm (Eastern). I don't
think they will show any old Rula
Lenska commercials, but you never know. Women's Elite Canada is also going
on that weekend at Seneca, isn't it?
I don't know
which newspapers with cover Subway, but will find out.
For those who
have bio's of the Americans, or anyone else for that matter,
I would like
their birthdate, birthplace, hometown, occupation, club, and
coaches, as well as a short paragraph of their career
highlights and if
possible, a photo that shows
their face. Any photos that you
have can be
ftp'd, e-mailed, or snail mailed to
me. I'll return the photos with
a
diskette of the scan, if you like. Proper credits will be given if
published on the Profiles page.
Thanks again for
all you support and interest!
Grace

Everyone is talking about the
Pre-Olympics. I have never heard of them.
What are they and how do they
select the athletes who go?

Recruits, Fantasy Gymnastics
Date sent: 27-OCT-1995 08:27:32
OK,
I'm trying something new here today. We're going to see if we can't
get this signature shorter without changing it. :)
Anyhow...I
mentioned the word "recruits." :) I know I asked a while
back, but I never could find the digest that someone told me
to look
up. I really am curious about only two
schools, though, so maybe some
one from those
could answer? Did Michigan or Florida get any good recruits?
Second, I
overheard a conversation about fantasy football the other day.
Anyone ever
hear of fantasy gymnastics?

Men's comp. in Iran?
The NandO
Times reports that al-Iraq, an official Iraqi daily,
has
reported that an Iraqi men's gymnastics team will be
competing
in a gymnstics championships to be held in Tehran,
Iran
in the third week of November, and that this
will represent the
first exchange of athletic
teams between Iran & Iraq since the
Iran-Iraq war (ie, since 1980). Neither country, so far as I
could determine from the Sabae
pages, sent any athletes to the
world
championships; does anybody know anything about the quality
of Iranian or Iraqi gymnastics (I can't imagine training
conditions have been too good in the last 15 years in Iran
or in
the last 5 in Iraq, if they ever were), or
anything about what
teams will be competing in the
Tehran championships?
As further evidence of a possible thaw in
relations between the
two countries, Iran will be
attending something called the
Baghdad International Fair next week. I have no idea what that
is. N&O
didn't have much to say on the international affairs
context
behind this; they just basically set out the info
reported
by the Iraqi press.
For those interested, the brief N&O article
can be found at
http://www.nando.net/nt/nando.cgi; go to
sports; sports briefs.
No other news or sports services seem to
have picked up on it (at
least I couldn't find
anything), and (not surprisingly) it hasn't
made
the gymn calendar as yet, either. If there are any
subscribers
in the region, or with contacts in the region, I for
one
would love to hear more about this, though! (by
private
email if it seems too esoteric for general
interest).

Actually, as far as I know we're hosting Elite
Canada on the 8th and
9th of December.
It's
great to hear Pod's making another appearance this year in
Hamilton. I was on the floor last
year and spoke to Gina Gogean and
Anna-Maria Bican but I didn't get a
chance to meet Pod.
Maybe this year...

p.s. keep up the
great work, we all realy appreciate it!

Re: Eating Disorders...
Two thoughts, and then I'll try to get off this
topic:
1. Sarah, if you
can get the numbers on runners I'd appreciate it. I'd
especially
appreciate it if you could get the numbers on sprinters since
that's who I was thinking about when I posted, although the
info on
distance runners would be interesting
too.
2. Perhaps we should
be looking at teenaged female competitive chess
players. Nobody pays more attention to detail or
is more perfectionistic
or obsessive, but the body
plays little to no role in chess.
It would be
an interesting comparison.
Ilene,
who is tired of fighting about this and is going to try to make her
next post a bit more
upbeat.

Introduction of a new subscriber
Hi! My name is Christopher (you can call me
Chris), and
I have just
subscribed to gymn. I am 21 years old and have been a
serious gymnastics fan
for about ten years. I am from Brampton Ontario, but right
now I am living
on campus at York University. Students here get free access to e-mail
and
internet services, and if it weren't for that,
I wouldn't even know about
this service. I do prefer women's gymnastics, but I do
also enjoy men's
(rhythmic doesn't really interest
me at all). My favourite
all time gymnasts
are Daniela Silivas
(it is my opinion that she was robbed of the AA gold in
Soeul), and Yuri Korolev.
Does anyone know what they are doing now? I was
also
a big fan of Kristie Phillips (I cried for ever when she didn't make the
Olympic
Team; if
she hadn't gone out of bounds on floor at the trials, she
would have beaten out Rhonda for the alternate spot, you
know). Has anyone
seen her first movie?
It's called SPLITFIRE (I think), and I saw it listed
for pay TV (which I don't get). She plays a gymnast! Kind of weird for
someone
who is supposodly so bitter to the sport. I unfortunately missed the
60
minutes spot. Could someone post a
summary of what was talked about?
Anyway, that's all for now. I am looking forward to participating in
this
for years to come!

Looking for other
gym parents of level 5,6,7..... How are meets run
in your childs gym. What does the parents booster group do
to help
raise money, etc.
I live in Mass.
near the NH border. My daughter is
a level 5 and is
now in a gym in Mass. Last year she was in a gym in NH that
was
closer to home but she asked to go to another
gym. Has anyone else
had this happen? The ride is a lot longer but she is
extremely happy
in the new gym.
Next
month she is going to the Kingstown Tigers Invitational in Rhode
Island. Is anyone else going?
If you
would like to write please e-mail me at ***@prodigy.com
I look forward
to exchanging ideas with other parents.

Re: Recruits, Fantasy Gymnastics
Have never heard of Fantasy
Gymnastics, but with a husband who 'played'
Fantasy Football last year, the
possibility coincidentally hit me a few days
ago. How would it work? Would folks be able to field teams
encompassing
gymnasts from every country, every
'era,' or just one? Would they be
able to
substitute different gymnasts in for
different events? Yeah, a few days
ago
I definitely wondered about the feasibility of creating such a
game. But
then
I became overwhelmed at all the thought that would go into it and conked
out from the exhaustion of the thought (no, I'm not
narcoleptic -- just
overtired!). If you'd like to pursue the idea,
though, I'd REALLY be
interested in participating,
especially with the Olympics coming up!
We
could base our standings in Fantasy
Gymnastics upon what the actual competing
gymnasts
accomplish in the meet. Ooooh, I'm starting to like the idea more
and more...
