Hotel's North of Boston
Sorry for the delay to those of you who wrote

This highway goes into Boston, with an

I haven't had time to get prices (Little League
started for my son,
plus driving to the gym for my
daughter who has States (L5) next
weekend), so
please accept my apolgy.

No Marinescu?!
I am
just a tad annoyed that beam silver medallist
Alexandra
Marinescu was not shown in either ABCs
or CBCs broadcast. She was the
only women's medallist not to be
shown on ABC. In total in their
broadcasts, they showed 5
non womens' medallists, so
why they didn't show
Marinescu really puzzles
me. I really wanted to see her ff-full again.
Oh well. Maybe she'll exact revenge by winning AA
in Atlanta?

Scherbo's interview
For
those who do not get CBC, I thought you might be interested
to hear what Scherbo had to say
during a profile during CBC's world
broadcast. He seems very bitter at his home country
in Belarus, which he
says hasn't given him
anything. He says he only wears the
Belarus
colours on his
shorts because it is required to represent a country; he
can't
compete just for himself. He said
that had his wife's car accident
occured
in Belarus, she would be dead now.
He is very greatful for the
United States
and he said basically that the US is his favourite
thing in
life (or something to that effect). I had no idea the degree of his
bitterness.
Honestly I'm surprised that Belarus would let him continue
to compete for them given his attitude. Does Svetlana Boginskaya
have
similar sentiments? I had read originally that her comeback
was at the
urging of the Belarussian
federation.

Worlds
>7) I don't know if anyone on the list can answer this
question, but I was
>wodnering
if anyone knows if Kotchekova is trained by Schevchencko (a.k.a.
>the
Pink Panther of the late 80's) still? I heard about this two years ago
>but I haven't heard much since then.
I'm pretty sure
that Kotchetkova's head coach is Leonid Arkayev (sp?). I
heard this about a year ago.
A couple of comments
about worlds:
1) I can't believe that ABC showed Gina Gogean's routine where she fell, but
did
not show the silver medalist's routine, Alexandra Marinescu!
2)
Although I was impressed by Kui Yuanyuan's
routine during the floor
competition at worlds, I
didn't like the fact that she had five tumbling
passes. Of course it was amazing, but IMHO, too
much tumbling takes
something away from the routine. I think four passes are more than
enough
because it still allows a nice balance of
acrobatics and choreography.
What
do you all think?

Jaycie Phelps on NBC Tonight
Dear Gymners,
I saw in my paper today that at 1:30 in
the morning tonight (Saturday) there
will be
another installment of "The Road to U.S. Olympic Gold." Among the
other
two athletes featured is Jaycie Phelps.
Unfortunately,
it's only 30 minutes long. If I
can't stay up for it, I'll
record it and tell
everyone about it if it's interesting.
I'd like to echo several
comments that GYMN has been much more enjoyable
lately,
with positive comments and real information being shared. Let's
keep
it up!

Liu's Start Value
To
the judges out there: I know that
Liu's start value was only
9.9 in compIII finals
in PUR (it had been 10 in qualifying under compII),
but I have an interesting thought here. Had even one of her giant-fulls
been givent
the D value (which is the value when the pirouette occurs
within 10 degrees on handstand) she would have started from
10, even with
the low value for the one arm
giant. Now I have seen her routine
before,
and from the angle I've seen it at, her
giant fulls are always right on
top of the bar.
It was hard to tell from the angle of the broadcast, but
does anyone think it is possilbe
that the judges purposely didn't give
her the D
value for the giant full to keep her start value down to
further
the message they are trying to send about the one-arm giant? Do
the
judges out there think that her giant full was worthy of the D-value?
Chris.

I
was equally amazed... more so that they showed Gina Gogean's
routine
which landed her in 8th place but skipped Marinescu.
Even more annoying to me personally was
the negative, onrunning
commentary
by Kathy Johnson Clark regarding the romanian floor
routines.
Now I will not deny there are routines being competed out there
that are
true works of art (Khrkina)
in terms of tumbling and dance. But
enough
is enough I fail to see how the other
routines shown on ABC were so much
more superior
in dance quality to the romanian ones shown.
I
don't think Ms. Johnson-Calrke ever fully recovered

with Emilia Eberle of Romania...

Just a quick note to let everyone know that
uploading (or reproducing in any

the publication -- *ANY* publication -- is a violation of
copyright law.
Also uploading, or using in *ANY* way, an unpublished

no-no.
This also applies to using photos in your local club

On
vault, a Hristakieva is a Yurchenko
entry (round off onto the
boardh,
back handspring to the horse) follwed by a half twist
to a front
layout. On UB, the Hristakieva
is the same as a Def (or Gienger
with a
full) on men's HB. In other words, it's a flyaway with 1
1/2 twists to
regrasp.

Mareniscu's beam
Perhaps they showed Gina
since she did win Vault and FX and they probably
wanted
her on the broadcast since she'll be in the hunt for AA in Atlanta.
But, I havce to say that Mareniscu's my bet for AA gold from Romania.
As
for the broadcast:
1) Lui's beam was great.
Anyone else notice that she used Yang Bo type jumps
three
times?
2) Dina deserved to win in my opinion. Lui
had a couple of questionable
balance checks. Who
knows how Marinescu stacked up.
But, just PSYCHED
that Dina finally got a score
that she deserves, considering the fact that
she
was so underscored in Sabae on beam.
3) Were
the two chinese in shown on
the Sabae team? If not, the Chinese look
unbeatable.

ABC Coverage stinks!!!
I too was VERY annoyed that ABC "chacked" Marinescu's beam
routine,
especially when it became apparently that
they had skipped right over
here. Grr...I would also have preferred
to see her to Gogean, or even
to
Phelps.
On another note, what is with this hyperactive, overly-jumpy choreography
that
is predominate, or least appears to be at the international level?
None of

Oh, and NCAA event
finals are over. I'll post the complete results when
I get them, but winners
were Heidi Hornbeek and Kim Kelly on floor (10.)
Leah
Brown on vault, Stephanie Woods on bars and Summer Reid on beam.

I agree with
Michele. The magazine cover was nice. But for everybody
to
assume she is an Olympian is a little presumptuous. We haven't
even had the nationals yet. It think
all of this hype puts a lot of
pressure on her.
It's too much for someone so young.
I have heard many people say she
is going to win gold in Atlanta.
Suppose she doesn't win gold in Atlanta?
Suppose she doesn't even
make the Olympic team
(heaven forbid)? I know she has a lot of
potential
and is very talented, but we haven't seen enough of her to
make such grand expectations. Besides who should? She has
been on the
national scene one year? 2? She won a
silver medal on one apparatus
(balance beam) at
the '95 world championships, and of course the all
around
last year at the nationals. But we must be careful to not to
make her out to be the next Nadia Comeneci.
Not just yet. Those are
some big shoes to
fill.
