Does anyone on GYMN know anything about the new gymnastics
video that was
advertised during NBC's coverage of
Nationals? I'd like to know
something
about it before I consider
ordering. Thanks.

Re: Australian Club Champs
Since there has been a lot of mail coming through lately about
USA Nationals I
thought I'd post the results of Australia's own
Nationals held
recently. I attended the Division A session
of
the Australian Womens National Clubs competition. It
was an Elite
All-Around session with Junior girls from
various clubs competing. All
Australian states were
represented except TAS and New Zealand also
competed.
Here are the results.
WAG Division A OPTIONALS
1. Kate Lam (Darwin PCYC) NT
2. Anne-Marie Williamson (Western YC) SA
3. Laura Robertson (New Zealand)
4. Rebekah Armbruster (Chandler Comets GC)
QLD
5. Sarah Prosser (Chetkovich GC) WA
6. Alyssa Harvey (Kanahooka GC) NSW
7. Nikki Orr (Olympic GC) WA
8. Ann Maree Vallence
(Northern Districts GC) WA
9. Julia Logan (Manicas GC) WA
10. Renate Marquis Nicholson (New Zealand)
11. Jessica Wilson (Cheltenham) VIC
11. Pauline Czarnecki (Cheltenham) VIC
13. Melissa Lawrence (Canberra City GC) ACT
14. Kirsty Pearson (New Zealand)
15. Brooke Walker (Cheltenham) VIC
16.
Jennifer Schaefer (Canberra City GC) ACT
VAULT
1. Rebekah Armbruster
2. Nikki Orr
3. Renate Marquis Nicholson
BARS
1. Laura Robertson
2. Sarah Prosser
3. Kate Lam
BEAM
1. Anne-Marie Williamson
2. Kate Lam
3. Alyssa Harvey
FLOOR
1. Alyssa Harvey
2. Kate Lam
3. Anne-Marie Williamson
Here are some notes from the competition:
Melissa Lawrence- nice twists on floor- clean. Scary front sault
on beam in warm ups. (Very, very low)
Alyssa Harvey- 9.9 sv on floor! Good twists-
double and 1 1/2.
Uses Hatagans 1993 Junior Europeans music.
Performed a yurchenko vault
seemed
a bit hurt on landing. Had two falls on bars- low 7's. Too bad
cos she has good difficulty. Trains
at the AIS. Australian gym fans
may
remember her from the Ju-Ping documentary on ABC a
while back.
Highest sv on beam-9.7. FF-FF-Layout(fall)
Katerina Frketic-
had to withdraw due to injury. On the topic of
injury,
the people next to me were saying that many QLD girls,
including
Jade Davidson have stress fractures.
Kate Lam- trains at the AIS with Alyssa Harvey. (Also in the
documentary)
Nice music on floor Handspring full twist vault. Full
twisting
Korbut on beam. Bars- two uprises
to handstand, bent arms
slightly
both times. Kate got so occupied watching Anne-Marie on floor
that
she almost forgot to get ready for beam! Her little sister
competed
level 7 here. Kate definitely deserved to win. She was the
most
consistent gymnast of the night.
Renate Marquis Nicholson- coolest hair of the meet-
just like
Tatiana Lyssenko's!!
All the NZ girls had good swing on bars.
Rebekah Armbruster- VERY fast tumbler!
Lightning quick whip
backs.
Best music- the NZ girl who used pan pipe
music. Different.
Anne-Marie Williamson- in great form (better than at state
champs)
Vault- handspring front Hands down
on first, better on
second. Bars- nice stalder on low, stuck double pike. Floor- got
the
loudest applause of any routine. Mature dance. She really
throws
herself into the routine. Nailed double tuck, handspring,
bounder,
layout, (whip)? double twist.
Beam-WOW!! Fronttuck on, front tuck,
ff-ff-layout (high, good
stepping out technique) double twist
dismount-tuck!
Clearly the best on beam.
Cheltenham girls-I think all three of them fell
off beam. Fairly
strong on all events. Cheltenham was runner up
National Elite Club.
Chandler Comets GC won.Sarah Prosser- high piked jaeger on bars.
Almost fell off when
reaching for high bar (Overbalanced, had to swing
arms
and make an extra circle) Lucky!!! I was very impressed with her
on
all events- she just made mistakes. Beam- excellent difficulty
-fall.
Wonderful flexibility! Double tuck off. Floor-good dance.
'Bummed' out of one
pass. I think she could have placed minus falls
etc.
Nikki Orr- didn't see her vault but I bet it was good- she has
the
right body type. Nice leo
with Olympic colours on it. Short and
powerful
girl.
I really enjoyed this comp. If any one wants individual scores
they
can E-mail me.

Cdn. Women's World Trials (IA)
Here are
COMPULSORIES results which were faxed to me over the
weekend.
Hopefully optionals & final rankings
will show up in the next day or two.
Just a guess, but this meet *could* be
televised on SRC (CBC-French) for those
of us
"up north" ... all 15 of us! ;)
Keep an eye out the next few Saturdays.
**NOTE: These results do not reflect the final
team. Last I was told, the
top 9
will go to a couple of
training camps before Sabae and the final team
will
be selected from there.
Thus we can
assume that the majority of gymnasts are not peaking for this
meet, but rather slowly improving as we get closer to Sabae.
Ranks 3 through 7 look tight ... the girls
aren't gonna make it easy to
pick
a team!
Btw, for those of you wondering where Lisa Simes'
name is, I've been told that
she retired from the
national team this summer and will compete for Michigan
this
fall.

hello
Hello, all! My name is Stephanie, and this is my
re-introduction. I was on gymn for
a couple of weeks at the beginning of
the summer,
but then left for my summer job as a camp counselor and have
only now gotten back to my computer. So here i am-and i'll try to keep
this short!
I am
now 18, from seattle, and
will be attending the University of
Washington in the
fall. I started gymnastics at the age of 12 (an
old-timer, i know) and
then competed for my high school. I
sort of
plateaued at a USGF level 5/6 and didn't
get much further than that; a
combination of a
fear of tumbling into back tucks and the lack of a
really
good place to train hindered that. But i'm not
complaining a bit-i
loved
every minute of being out there on the floor! (or
beam, or whatever.)
I
also coached for about a year and a half, mostly level 4-ish,
although i did coach a small
recreational-optional team (about level 6)
as well
as being the informal other coach for my high school team. I am
looking to get back into coaching after the summer off, but
that might be
on hold for a bit while i settle into university life.
Well, i guess i've
taken up enough space already, so i'll just
say i'm looking forward to being
back on this list, and if you're from my
area (seattle) or just want to say hi, drop me a line!
Solong!

to injury. Spain was superior in the group

I am not sure, I am not really an expert
in rhythmic gymnastics.
But I do know that the first score given on Sunday
was a 9.95
I thought that was a bit much to set a standard (it was
Elena
Vitrichenko though)

they could of put so much more coverage on Also, what is the difference

Rhythmic Gymnastics
I created a mail list of people who have written or expressed
interest in
Rhythmic Gymnastics when I first subscribed to GYMN, but I
haven't kept it
up. My intent was to have an address list I
could send an E-mail question
that specifically
addressed an RSG issue (like parents going to Classics/JO's
etc) without flooding GYMN. General topics, discussion-related
issues meet
results etc., are excellent for the
larger GYMN forum. But
specific
inquiries about a special interest might
be of value too. Does anyone else
agree?
Many
INet services charge per E-mail over a certain
amount, and for other
reasons, this seemed to make
sense. I could see GYMN having value in tracking
specific
interests of subscribers who want to volunteer the info and making
it available as a download. Is this a feasible
suggestion?

Re: TIME article
Perhaps one of the best ways to take the emphasis off
of weight and height is
to stop the stupid
television networks from playing it on air. There
really
is NO reason to tell people this information except to remind people
of the "elfin" image of a gymnast. I don't CARE if
someone is 5 feet or
4 feet tall. You can tell
they are small or medium or tall by looking at
them
standing near an apparatus. They should stop this. After all, are we
constantly reminded of how tall and how much Monica Seles
weighs? I think
not.
Jeff
My two cents.

since this was eliminated, the
information was not
available to reporters, or am I wrong?

To
answer your question a reverse hecht
and a takachev are the same. Also in
response to the over the hill comments if Shannon was 12 and
made the same
mistakes it would be because she was
young and inexperienced, no matter what
people
always seem to think that age is a measure of how good a gymnast you
are. Which we all know is false.

Hi
again,
Got final results today.
There were a few changes in the rankings, the most
drastic being Jamie Hill's drop from 7th to 10th.
Again,
"these results do not reflect the final team. Last I was told, the top 9
will go to a couple of training camps before Sabae and the final team will
be
selected from there."

Or how about a double twisting front, punch back?
I've
never seen or heard of a front punch back.
The only way I've
seen things continue into
a back flip is from back tumbling (i.e back
punch
back).
I think it would be really hard on your lower back to go from front
tumbling immediately punching backward.

Plus, it would be almost impossible to stop your
momentum from going foward.
Now a *gainer* somi would be okay, since you would be going in the
same
direction (forwards).
Back tumbling
suits itself for reversing direction, since your hands are
*above* you and you can easily through them forward to somi. It would be
really
awkward to go from arms above you and try to throw them back and
your hips while your chest is still going forward. Violates
inertia rule.
BTW: I have seen mani barani punch backs, so
it really depends on where
your hips are
going.

height and weight
I agree with Jeff and others about height and
weight. What is the point of
saying it, and do you hear it in other sports? Imagine if you are a young
girl and your height and weight is being broadcast on
national television!
That in itself is a tremendous pressure to be smaller and
lighter.
