Let's see if I can get this right...

It's the producer's job to select which pictures get on the air and it's
the director's job to technically get them there (as in which shot is shown
when).

In NBC's case, the former task falls to David Michaels; who has posted
"from the parking lot of the Georgia Dome." Nothing like watching the
events from a truck! (But that's where all the non-camera/microphone
technical equipment is.)

I'm posting this thinking back to the Triplecast, when the commentators
(very) often said that they never know which replays (if any) would be
broadcast at any given time. "It all depends on what the producer
selects," they said. Generally, replays and routines not shown in real
time would be shown at the end of a rotation; when athletes were moving
from one apparatus to the next.

Subject: Moceanu after AA finals

Not only was Moceanu's attitude impressive, but so was the way she
handdled Beth Ruiak (sp)'s interviewing. I'vce quit ripping on
NBC for the most part, basically because their coverage Thursday was
just about right on, but Beth's first interview question really
showed a trend with NBC. Their interviewers have been asking questions
which have no place ending up on television. If you want to ask
Dominique Moceanu about losing, do so in a way which shows respect.
The question about "winning, then losing, how does it compare,"
was one of the worst I've seen. Moceanu handled herself like a pro,
and I was so proud of her.

Not to start the crowd controversy all over, but take a look
at what happened with Bama this year. Their crowd was LOUD.
Nichigan hit beam during Bama's floor. OSU hit beam during Bama's
vault, as did UCLA hit beam during Bama's vault. Noone
there complained. In fact, in the past, people have asked about
it and coaches say it is a fact of life.

Subject: what's this exhibition thing

Gymnastics exhibition is scheduled between 4 and 6 pm on Tuesday.
Does anybody know exactly what this entails? I imagine it will be
similar to the exhibition in figure skating - with all the top competitors
performing routines. I wonder which gymnasts will be selected to
perform.

I was thinking of some things that they could do for this that I'd really
like to see:

- A mini skills competition, with events such as who can hold an iron
cross the longest (I think we all know who would win that), or who can
vault the furthest, or who can perform the most consecutive release
moves. For some reason I can't think of a lot of cool things for women.

- A display of the most innovative and original moves/routines in the
compeition. Gymnasts could perform moves or passes that they
were the first one to do - like the "Mo" salto, the "Teza" on beam and
the "Phelps" and "Scherbo" vaults. Gymnasts with particularly different
routines and/or combinations could also perform.

- Groups of several gymnasts (not neccessarily from the same team)
performing synchronized passes on the floor. This doesn't really have
to be practiced - they could just decide to do a certain pass at the same
time.


It is listed in CBC's Tuesday night schedule - I can't wait to see it!!

Don't get me wrong, I like her a lot, and think she is a wonderful gymnast,
but it seemed her routine to be a little too seductive and sexy. Anyone

Who is Elfie, anyways? Is she an ex-gymnast, or just another
announcer who tries to act like they know more than they really do?
Also, it seems to me that Tim Dagget has fallen behind in the
gymnastics world. He didn't even know the names of half the moves in the
men's competition. All he talks about is everyone's downfalls and their
dismounts. He barely talks about the routine itself. It seems like all he
knows about gymnastics anymore is the stuck landing (that's all he ever
comments on). We need someone a little up to date in gymnastics, and not
so condescending to the athletes.
Any volunteers? ;-*

I believe the maximum is 2 per country.

Speaking of event finals...
1. Maybe I missed the original discussion (I haven't been the most
dilligent in keeping up with this group over the past several months.), but
whose bright idea was it to mix up men's and women's events?

2. If a gymnast is unable to compete in a particular event final, is
his/her place taken by the next highest qualifier (assuming it doesn't
affect the max. 2 per country rule), or a gymnast from the withdrawing
gymnast's team? I think I saw a post indicating that Miller and Dawes
would replace Kerri if she were unable to compete; which is leaving me a
bit confused. I would think that the next highest qualifier would be the
replacement. Help?

I believe that NBC and CBC will have minimal coverage of the Rhythmic
competition. Is there anybody with access to the satellite or from Europe
that can tape the routines from the different countries? I don't worry too
much about incompatible format because I know people that convert for very

Subject: About Efli Schlegel

To Kovacs and all others wondering about Elfi Schlegel:
Elfi is a former Canadian National Champion and Canadian Olympian from
the early 1980s. After her Olympic and National career was over, she earned a
full scholarship to the University of Florida, where she was ranked as one of
the top three NCAA women's all-arounders in the country for her entire
career.
Following UF, she began her broadcasting career, first starting with
Sports Channel, then SportsSouth, then up to Canada's sports channels. Of
course, she is now with NBC.
Elfi is extremely knowledgeable about the sport but, at the same time,
knows when to keep quiet. She once told me that if a beautiful floor routine
is being performed, she'd much rather shut up than sully the performance with
silly comments.
Elfi has also distinguished herself as a rather good coach. When she
finished up at UF, she came back a few years later to coach beam, and I'd see
her in there every day, perched on vault, for several hours straight,
coaching the gymnasts on the nearby beam.
That year, at NCAA nationals, Florida had the highest beam scores, two
nights in a row.

Hello............MOCEANU QUALIFIED for FX finals!!!!!!!!

She didn't cheat, forget the rules, put the decision in her coaches hand, lie
about an injury or any other unfair tactic the Europeans pull to get what
they want. She got to FX finals by her own scores.
Why in the world, would we take this away from her? To get the gold????
First of all, this isn't a team event. This is for individual glory.
Dominique Moceanu will light the arena up, whether she finishes in 1st or
8th. This is for her pride now, not ours. To take it away from her
because you think she is not qualified (a 9.837 in team is not qualified?
This isn't '92!) is just plain foolish.
I don't mean to blow up at you, but why should we start playing games like
the Romanians and the former Soviet's? This is the land of the free. (And
Kerri's put new meaning to the home of the brave!!)
I wish Moceanu, Strug, Miller, Chow and Dawes a successful, prosperous, FAIR,
and golden event finals. No matter what they still are the beat team in the
World. Not just in my book, in THE book.

I hereby apologize to the list for calling Shannon Miller a
quitter. I have been informed that it was Nunno's decision for her
to do the half vault and not Shannon's, so it was out of her
control and she did not quit. At the time I thought it was her
decision to do the half and I felt that she should have gone for the 1 and 1/2
since she might have had the outside chance of getting a medal.

I do not, however, apologize for using my rights as an American to
express my opinion. I do not apologize, for also following up with my
opinion with my 'defence' post. I do not think that anything that I
meantioned was inappropriate to this list, since I have seen MANY a things
which do not belong on this list since they have NOTHING to do with
the sport (figure skating and diving talk, etc).
I am also entitled to look at things differently than others on
this list and to speak out when I feel like it.\

If you don't like my opinions, comments, etc, then please deleted my email.
If you get it in digest, I do not know of a way to prevent you from seeing
them. Perhaps you could email Rachelle and she might know how. I will not,
however, leave this list.

Nothing in my post about Miller was meant as malicious. It was criticism
that I had given my observation of the situation. But again, it was
up to you to decide and you claimed it was. I have seen worse things talked
about, discussed beyond reason, and I just shrug it off.

Maybe next time you should get your facts right before you send such a rude
letter. However, I did consider it malicious. In my opinion, there is no
point in criticizing her. Shannon has been criticized enough in the past
four years in her attempt to make this Olympic Team. Now that she's here,
it's time to let sleeping dogs lie and be happy for her. This is most
likely her last Olympic Games, couldn't you just be happy for her? I'm just
tired of all of the criticism and rude comments on this list. Why don't we
start focusing on the positives of the sport? Your post not only revealed
your lack of empathy and respect towards Shannon, but also a lack of
knowledge of what a great gymnast truly is.

I do not think this is such a good idea.

In holding an (inverted) iron cross for too long a time perhaps veins can
burst, muscles can tear or the gymnast can become short of breath or loose
consciousness and would fall down from the apparatus. Very embarassing for
the gymnast himself and no good advertising for gymnastics in general...

BTW: it always seems te me the men are holding their breath or are breething
very shallow (only chest or abdomen) performing power skills - perhaps
someone can explain this.

Vaulting the furthest or performing the most consecutive release moves can be
dangerous and embarassing too.

I find this a very good idea.

Also a good idea, something like this is already being done in synchronized
trampolining, I believe it also a competetive element in this sport.

I have seen at a display in Brussels some years ago two gymnasts from the
Russian team performing synchronized moves at opposite ends of the same beam
to ballet music.

It was lovely to watch the girls moving towards each other and away again
performing various moves requiring power close to the beam and athletic
moves in slow-motion to the music, all perfectly synchronized. I dont recall
exactly if they were able to pass each other to change ends however.

I would like to see this kind of display again.

Hey all!
Well, although I would love to see Kerri compete in college, I also think
that she has a great opportunity to make tons of money and be set for
awhile. She has suddenly become America's sweetheart and is very, very
marketable. There is alot to be said for financial security, and if Kerri
plays her cards right, she should be very secure. If all she wants is a
college education, she can get that will all the money she makes from
endorsements, but if she wants the experience of competing in college, then
she should stay strong and not let the money persuade her. Yikes, what a
hard decision!

Hello,

My name is Michelle. I am a 24 year old located in a small town called
Hanford, CA. (very near Fresno - for other Californians out there). I am
self-employed as a massage therapist.

I started gymnastics when I was 5. I trained and competed in tumbling in
both Denver City and Odessa, TX. Unfortunately, I had to quit the program
when I was 13 when we moved to Mississippi. However, gymnastics has remained
a major part of my life and hope to coach someday.

I look forward to being a part of this forum.

Well, NBC just showed her "story". It wasn't bad - we've seen it
before. it almost seemed like a bio of her past 4 years to educate non
gymners....in case she does "take the money". It showed Barcelona and
how she switched gymns but remained in the shadow of others...it included
interviews with her, bela, and her parents.

right now they said she is deciding if she will do fx...i don't think she
will. We'll see.

I love how NBC advertises tonight by talking about Dawes, but not
mentioning that Miller qualified also...makes you wonder about the
"plausibly live " issue.
