Whipbacks...
Hey gang,
I was
wondering if someone could help me.
I'm just starting to get
back in the gym
again and I have been having a problem with a
tumbling
pass that used to come easy to me.
I can't seem to do whip
to full any
more. I'm supposed to go RO, BH,
WB, BH, full.
For some
reason, once I finish my WB I
can't do the second BH. I feel
like
i'm planted in the
floor...I have no momentum (sp) left. I don't
know
what to do. It's really
upsetting...this is a pass that I used
to
compete. I'm trying to take into consideration
that I haven't
worked out in a year, but to lose a
WB?????? Anyway, if someone
could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Who
Get a grip, Garlfar. :-) I went to 3 of
Comaneci's NYC appearances
(Bloomingdale's in 1993, Lord & Taylor in
May, and Macy's last week) and
at no time was she
"rude and dismissive."
Quite the contrary; she
stayed and signed
autographs for every person in line and chatted with
each
person, as well. IMHO, she's quite
down to earth and friendly.

Re: The Drinking Game
While re-wathing my
tape of the Canadian Olympic trials, I noticed that the
announcer,
whom I'm fairly sure was Carol Orchard, kept saying "Now this
routine is physically demanding." She said that about basically all
the
routines. It was so annoying.
Aren't all
routines fairly physically demanding?

Two books on Dominique M.
There are two books on Dominique Moceanu. One is
a lighthearted
children's book which is called
Dominique Moceanu: An American
Champion. It is written by
Dominique and Steve Woodward.
It mainly
discusses her 1995 U.S.
Championship victory. The book
is
interesting if you don't know a lot about her or
the sport. I (and I
know of several others) was disappointed with the book. It seems
like
a media fluff piece that capitalizes on the pre-Olympic hype.
There were
several errors and inconsistencies in it, which left me
wondering
if Dominique and/or her parents reviewed the final copy.
This book is
available now.
The other book is titled Dominique Moceanu: A Gymnastics Sensation.
It is written by Krista Quiner. The book is a
in-depth look at her
life in chronological
order. The overall theme is positive,
but it
also discusses some controversial
issues. Over twenty people
have
been interviewed for the book,
including: Kim Zmeskal,
Betty Okino,
Kerri Strug,
Jennie Thompson, and many of Dominique's teammates and
coaches
from her previous gym. To date,
Dominique has not been
interviewed for the
book. She may not be able to
because of a
contract with Bantam, the publisher
of the other book. This book,
published by the Bradford Book Company, is due out in
November and
will cover the Olympics.

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 26 Jun 1996 to 27 Jun 1996
it
really upsets me when people dumps on gymnastics, and today i
just
read one such dump.
i have a good experence to
tell you about gymnastics.
i
was in a mall in norman, and i thought i saw achache and szabo formaly
of the romanian olympic team.
i
tried to act nonchalant, but pointed them out to my husband, who quite
loudly almost yelled. what would romanians be doing in oklahoma! that
cant' be ekatrina szabo
one of the woman walked up to my husband, and said yes i am.
szabo
was in oklahoma visiting achache,
who at the time was working for
nadia's
gym.
we walked out into the mall with them, and
had a good talk.
then achache
asked me didn't i want their autographs?
so i had my husband run out to my
car, and get a gymnastic book. and
they autographed it.
they were very nice.
i also went to the 1979 worlds with my local gym
team, and we got to meet
some of the competors. esp,
the british and other lesser known
countries. and they signed our
program books and posed for photos.
yes, someone
might not show up for something, but have you ever thought
there was a comunications problem?
perhaps they where told the wrong time
to show up, or they called someone to tell them they wheren't comming,
and that information never got passed on.

Not true, Mihai
has received several letters from his friends, family, and fans.
The
person who is running that program is Rachele of this
very forum, she also
happens to be the Webmaster
of USA Gymnastics Online. If you
knew her, you'd know she
would *never* setup a
program that would lead anyone on.
The mail is going
directly to her and she
delivers it.
So all of you who have written
to your favorite athlete, or friend competing,
Rest assured they received
the note.

spoiler: US men's compulsories (partial)
I haven't been able to get
results via usag or gymn
for some reason -- can't
get on -- but I found a
short reuter's piece on nando's
sportserver and
thought
that others might be having the same problem and could use the update
(below). None of
the other sources (espn and its ilk; the various olympic
gymn pages) seemed to have anything yet.

Results (apparently taking into account (I'm
assuming reuters has this
right)
that nationals are to be counted 40% and
trials scores 60%, so that today's
compulsories
would amount to 30% of the score? (unless, as with women,
there's
also a skew for compulsories):
1.
John Roethlisberger 160.683
2.
Blaine Wilson 159.460
(fall on PH)
3. John McReady
156.999
4. Jair Lynch
156.044 (6 for 6 to jump from 8th to 4th)
5. Kip Simons
155.710
The only other info was tht
Scott Keswick had a terrible time on PH to score
8.15, the lowest score in
the meet, but reuters did
not indicate what
this did to his place in the
standings, and did not provide any info on
any
other gymnast outside the top 5.

ap re men's results
(spoiler)
Finally got to one of my ap sources (the Washington Post, which has just
dropped its pay service in favor of a free one, at least for
now, so even if
you don't want to check out the ap story, you may want to check out recent
gymn articles (yesterday re
home-town girl Dominique Dawes; today re injuries
& women's
trials and also an article on rhythmic with pic of Jessica Davis).
Anyway,
I found the ap article in
the sports section, which includes a
subsection
carrying breaking ap sports articles, at the
following address:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/cgi-bin/displaySearch?WAPO+15709+%28sports%3Astory
%5Ftype%29%3AALL
That should
waste some space, but for good measure:
Roethlisberger
scored 9.7 on rings in first rotation to move into 1st; Wilson
fell further behind on PH with an 8.625. Simons also lost alot
of ground on
PH, temporarily falling to 8th, with an
8.35. Keswick, whose back
problems
were noted, finished 10th, .8 out of 7th,
but remained hopeful that making
the team was
still within reach. Waller never
got higher than 10th and
currently is 12th. No mention of Bagiu
-- if you're on, Kris, please pass
along best
wishes.

Stress fractures
Mary Lynne, Sorry one cannot avoid mentioning
overtraining in the same
sentence as stress
fractures as the two go hand in hand. Heres a
definition
I found for you.
Stress fracture
Fracture
caused by non-traumatic, cumulative overload on bone. Can be
caused by a number of factors including overtraining,
incorrect
biomechanics, fatigue, hormonal
imbalance, poor nutrition and osteoporosis.
Best investigated by Technetium
bone scan, as this will show up a stress
fracture
within 48 hours. Plain x-rays will show up a stress fracture, but
ususally only after 10 days.
Examination will almost always show up a
specific
point of maximal tenderness over bone, with possibly some global
tenderness, in the region, due to the reactive periostitis and soft tissue
irritation.
A
stress fracture starts out as a hairline break, if left untreated it can
extend into a full blown fracture.
Stress fractures can
occur almost anywhere in the skeleton though probably
most
common in the lower leg, feet and wrists of gymnasts. I don't really
think you can pinpoint specific moves that are more at
fault. A lot depends
on body type (those with more
muscle development), technique, intensity of
training
without adequate recovery time plus the other factors mentioned
above. Adequate calcium intake is important to maintain bone
density and
encourage bone cells to be laid
down.
