To Sports Acro fans out there:
Emily
Crocker and Neil Griffiths (GB) have won a silver medal for there
Tempo
routine
at the recent world champs. Emily
who became World Junior champion at
the Moscow event
in 1993 will now be a base in a trio due to her getting too
tall to be a
top, and her base retiring.

La Cirque du Soleil
Here a query for all you Sports Acro. people out there.
I
was watching the Royal Variety Performance on the TV last night. ( This is a
is a show for
charity performed in the presence of HM the Queen ).
Half way through
there was a real class act by a French circus group ' La
Cirque
du Soleil '. One part was a two man sports acro. routine which had to
be seen to be believed. In the main it consisted of some
incredible strength
moves combined with a degree
of contortionism on the part of the guy
underneath.
In one move the
supporter was lying prone on the floor with his
heels above his knees. The other was in handstand on his
heels. He then slowly
lowered his feet to the floor, rested, then slowly ( and agonisingly
) raised
them again. All this
with the other performer in handstand on his heels. Both
were of equal weight,well built,
around 15 stone each. Until I saw it I did
not
think this was possible !
So, if you get the chance to see this act,
and you are into sports acro, then
this is the one to see.
Does anybody know who these
two guys are ?
Yours amazed
!

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 26 Nov 1995 - Special issue
Maria asked the
question why the average age of retirement for girls
at
her gym is 15.
This also
happens at our gym for three reasons that I can suggest.
1) Social
reasons. Out of the gym she is doing more things independently. She
has her own circle of friends and increasing diversity of
activity including
BOYFRIENDS. She finds conflict between going out and
training.
2) Education. At 15 the pressure of school
work becomes very demanding. In the
U.K. studying the GCSE exams
becomes her life, leaving little time to
concentrate
and allow time for training. In fact many of our National gymnasts
elect to delay them for a year. This is a big decision for
herself and her
parents.
3) Physiological
change. At 15 the girl is changing physically into a woman
with the onset of puberty. Moves she could acomplish when she was a mere waif
at
the age of 12 now takes much conditioning and strength to maintain. The
mechanics alter. A simple cast to handstand on the bars
becomes a major
obstacle. Some girls are able to
adapt and make it through but the majority do
not.

December IG
Well, it's here, folks. The December IG has been released.
:) Lots and
lots of Worlds coverage, plus a huge
amount of spectacular pics. Hats off
to IG for putting Pods on the cover, and there is an
absolutely stunning
photo of Dominique Moceanu's pak salto
on bars. You have to see it to
understand, but I
didn't know you could get such an awesome pic of her.
Only complaint,
IG has once again decided to put the results on the
poster,
which is of Mo Huilan, BTW.

Assuming
these are the same ones you saw on TV, they are Paulo and Marco
Lorador. The
brothers are from Portugal. Paulo
(the blond guy) was
born Dec.3/65 and Marco (dark
hair) was born April 20/67.
Their act is from the "Saltimbanco" show and btw, it was from the
souvenir program of this show that I got the info.
I've
seen the video of the show and their performance *is* amazing.

Re: TV alert
In response to the last message about the Gymnastics
broadcasts on Saturday.
NBC is showing the "International Invitational
from Atlanta" on Saturday from
1:30-3:30. At
3:30 there is something on called the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. I
am not sure what that is. I don't see any gymnastics listed
on CBS at 3:00 on
Saturday. If anyone has a ny further information about the broadcast timnes
of the Subway
challenge, please post it.
Thanks in Advance,
Shari ;^)
Can't wait for Atlanta !!!!!!!!!

Collegiate Fans: Important administrative info!
Attention collegiate
gymnastics fans, two items of interest.
1) A new home for collegiate
gymnastics links.
In addition to Rachele's GYMN-L
Collegiate Gymnastics page
(http://rainbow.rmii.com/~rachele/college.html),
there is a new page
in town. While the aforementioned page will
remain the home of NCAA
history as well as
rankings updates, the list of collegiate homepages
has
moved.
It can now be found at
http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~poser/collgym.html
Note that each of these
pages contains a link to the other, so finding
them
won't be too hard.
More importantly for Rachele's
mailbox, this move also means that you
should send
newly-discovered collegiate homepage URL's to me rather
than
Rachele.
I am Patrick Tower <poser@leland.stanford.edu>, and I
welcome your help in making this page extra-large. If your favorite team
doesn't have a homepage but you have access to a schedule,
please email it
to me, and I will add the text
file to my home directory and link it
on this
page.
2) Coming soon to a mailing list near you (that'd be this here
GYMN-L):
The GYMN-L Collegiate Update
(That's the working
title for now. I welcome
suggestions for a more
creative title.)
This
will be a semiweekly (twice a week) publication to update people
on events concerning collegiate gymnastics. Once the season starts, this
will mainly consist of results from the previous weekend,
but injury notes,
recruiting updates, etc. will
also have a home here.
Note that this will not replace Rachele's mailing list for people who are
interested in receiving the weekly rankings.
The
current plan is to post one issue on Monday containing most of the
weekend's results with a supplemental issue on Wednesday to
include scores
from late meets (mainly Utah's
Monday meets) as well as slow mail that
doesn't
make Monday's deadline.
To make a submission, send email to
poser@leland.stanford.edu (not the list)
with
something in the subject line to indicate that this is for the
Collegiate Update (or whatever it will be called). This mail will be
digested
(urp!) and sent to the list on Monday and Wednesday
morning.
An archive will be maintained and listed on the Collegiate
Gymnastics
Links page (see item number one for the URL).
Until
the regular season gets in full gear in January, one issue a week
should be enough to cover the volume of submissions, so let
us hear
about your team's intra-squad meets,
etc. The first issue will appear
next Monday (Dec. 4).
I hope there won't be a need
to enforce a limit on length, but to keep people
from
having an absolutely enormous amount of text to wade through, I would
recommend that you try to keep the length around two
standard screenfulls
(48
lines).
The purpose of this endeavor is to minimize the amount
of posts which have
to be
deleted by those on the list who see collegiate gymnastics as a mere
training ground for the men and a retirement home for the
women (Believe it
or not, there are some among us
on whom the magic of collegiate gymnastics
is
lost.), or who don't live in the U.S.
Therefore, please resist the
temptation to
send such submissions to the list instead of or in addition
to sending them to me for inclusion in the Update.
I
welcome any suggestions for improvements to this publication.

Re: ACRO

Acro was a sport I was in for the last 5 or so years of my
life. If you are
talking what we called acro you
will get 3 events:
Tumbling
Trampoline
Double-mini Tramp
You
can have syncronized trampoling
too. Which of course is two tramps
obviously :) Anyways, then there are
Sports Acro.
This is where you have a group
of either guys and girls or mixed and they
perform floor routines, and for example, the guy holds up
the girl (or other
guy) and they can perform
handstands on their partners hands, or heads even,
and
they can also get thrown in the air and do double backs and fun stuff
like that.
Anyways, I loved training the
sport. The young dominated that
sport.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Krista, I live
in East Hanover, New Jersey,
and I am a
newcomer to Gymn. I was a competitive gymnast for fifteen
years,
competing at
Gymnastics of Ohio in
North Canton through high school and at the
University of Denver
through college.
I currently coach gymnastics at Shields Gymnastics
in Mount Freedom,
New Jersey.
Recently, I
completed my second gymnastics biography, Shannon Miller:
America's Most
Decorated
Gymnast. My first book was entitled
Kim Zmeskal:
Determination to
Win.
Writing these books was very exciting and enjoyable. Please let me
know
if you have
questions, comments, or criticisms
relating to either of these works.
I love gymnastics and look
forward to joining in the discussions with
all the
rest of you
fans on Gymn.

Address correction
I noticed on the FAQ that was sent to the list a
group of addresses for clubs
and federations
around the world. The address for DYNAMO is wrong. I tried to
send a letter to the PO Box address that was listed on the
list, it has been
posted on the web site for quite
some time. Anyway, I got my letter back with
an
address correction sticker stating that the forwarding time had expired on
that address and the address they gavew
me was this:
Dynamo Gymnastics
3901 N. Tulsa Ave.
Oklahoma
City, OK. 73112-2936

I thought that you may
