Re: Gymnastics in media
>>Anyone know of a time when a child on

gymnast? A movie? (Other than American Anthem).
I
don't remember the name of this TV movie, but it was about four kids
(different families) whose parents were all
divorcing/divorced. Lance Kerwin
and Kim Fields were
both in the movie, so it must have been early 80's. I
remember
(vaguely) a scene in which Kim's character was performing on the
beam. I think
the thrust of her part of the movie was that her family
situation
so upset her that she couldn't concentrate on her routines and
wound up getting injured in a fall off the beam.

Worlds TV Schedule
Hi,
I know there are two different air times
for the ABC worlds broadcast.
Does anyone know which parts of the
competition they will show on which days?
Thanks,

Re: pre-Worlds thoughts
I just wanted to put my
thoughts in about the upcoming Sabae Worlds.
In
the team competition, I believe Romania will lead the pack and will
be very hard to beat.
Behind them is very hard to guess.
Russia and
China will be very hard to beat. As for America, they should not be
counted out. It
will be harder with all of the injuries and replacements.
In
the All-Around, I think we all will be in for a treat. Without
a
dominant figure like Shannon Miller, it will be a great night. I think
the
following should have an impact:
Romania- Milo, Gogean, and Marenescu(sp.)
Russia- Khorkina, or any of other top 4
China- Mo Huilan, or an unknown
United States- Miller, Moceanu, and possibly
Kerri Strug
** There are others gymnasts from the
Ukraine, Belarus, etc. who of
course will be
factors. This list is a short and
an uncomplete list.
That's all for now. If anybody else wants to make formal
predictions,
I will risk being totally wrong and predict also.
See ya,
Mikester Bee

Rons shattered dream
I found Ron's post to
be the most moving peice I ever read of his.
I
recall the story of the athlete he described.
I remember the photo in
question.
Eastern Bloc used to do things like that at Olympics, if you
blew it,
you got sent home early.
Major
differences of opinion with Ron have adversely affected my feelings
towards Ron, and now I feel so sad for his plight.
Kinda brings us closer is a WIERD
way.
Ron's plight is mildly parallel to a political battle I am having
elsewhere on
the net.
In my
life in reality.
What do you say when a dream dies?
There is
NOTHING to say.
Nothing can be said to ease the pain.
I just hope he
can find a way to trade tix for what he wants.
Well
Ron there are only 2 possibilities for what to do,
#1 go sulk
or
#2 chalk up and get back on
Hopefully you will go
with the latter.
OK, so its a tad off topic,
but i kinda owe the guy
after some of the barbs
I threw at him in the past.
HE WROTE SOMETHING
THAT I REALLY LIKED !
(Sad subject, but good
writing!)
I hit him with in the past

Re: pre-Worlds thoughts
I agree with Mike that the ROM women will be
hard to beat. RUS, CHN, =
and possibly UKR could place ahead of the USA's weakened
team. If BLR =
has Boginskaya, they could also be
a factor. As for the AA, I think
=
that Milosovici or Amanar might have a shot at the title (although I =
shudder at the thought), along with Khorkina,
Miller or Podkopayeva (if =
she
can go 4 for 4). As good as they
might be, I don't really think =
that Marinescu or Moceanu will be true
contenders this year. I'd like
=
to see Khorkina win,
since I think she's got the best combination of =
grace,
originality and artistry.

It's simply not true that a judge from a
country such as Peru will have
experience only in
Peru. Judges often travel to meets
outside their
country
with their country, and even whether their country is
competing
or not. In women's, to judge at
Worlds and Olympics you have
to have been a brevet
judge for a certain number of years and have
judged
a certain number of international competitions. Specifically,
the
lowest level is Category III, at which level you can judge "team
competitions", "international tournaments",
and "regional competitions"
-- basically
your average, dinky dual meet or invite, plus stuff like
Central
American-Caribbean Games. To
move up to Category II, you have
to have judged
two international meets. As a
Category II, you can judge
at Continental and
Intercontinental meets as well as Worlds.
To move up
to Category I, you have to have
been Cat. II for 4 years and have judged
SA".>6FZm9DFznOlympics. To
FxSkh)<si9go
HgvHfrom Cat. I to Expert, you have to be Cat. I for
4 years
and have
judged
6 international meets, including two FIG Competitions. As an
Expert, you can judge
anywhere, act as Expert judge at FIG meets, and
lead
judges' courses.
Wherever the judge is from, if she's judging at the
Olympics, she's been
judging for quite a few years
and has considerable experience.
I might add that IMO, the Olympics is
the easiest meet to judge (from a
technical, not a
political standpoint) because the level of the gymnasts
is
so high. It's much harder to judge
gymnasts who make a lot of DSUi0g

Oops
Looks like my last message got chewed up. Anyway, I think you get the
point. I don't
have time to fix it up now, but maybe I will later. It
looks
like the only important fact that's missing is that you can judge
the Olympics only if you're a Cat. I or
Expert.

Worlds predictions
Date sent:
28-SEP-1995 19:21:33
Why is everyone having such a fit about
the US women not medaling?
I will agree that they have probably no shot at
the gold, but I think
they have complusories strong enough to contend for the silver.
Really, I
have a gut feeling that complusories will decide the competiion
in
Sabae. And, with the 7-6-5 rule,
the US is going to be fine. I agree
the shot at
the gold is lost, but silver or bronze is reasonable. The group
needs to foucs on doing their
best, not medaling. I mean, look at Dortmund
last
year. Look at what so-called "inexperience" can do. :)
All-around
predictions? I want to see the US Trials first. I don't think
Moceanu can expect to do too much better than 7th or 8th,
because I
think the international judges will be
beating up her form on beam and
bars. But, if
Miller is as on as she was at trials (supposedly) I think
she will contend for the gold. Also, I expect Strug is going to have the
meet
of her life, and if she does, I would expect her to be close to
the all-around medals. Khorkina
could win, but she's going to have tough
competition
from Miller Milosovici Strug
and Podkopayeva. Someone said
they
wanted to see a prediction, and I've been playing with numbers, so
here we go:
1)Shannon
Miller
2)Svetlana Khorkina
3)Lavinia Milosovici
4)Kerri Strug
5)Lilia Podkopayeva
6)Gina Gogean
7)Dominique Moceanu
8)Dina Kochetkova
If you disagree, sue me. :) And make
your own prediction. :)

More on int'l judging
I would think that judges from a non-gymnastics "power" would be preferred
at
the larger meets to promote more
neutrality.
Also, I recall that Jackie Fie of the USA (now WTC president)
was invited to
judge at the European Championships
in the seventies as a "neutral" judge.
