1997 World Championships
The 1997 World Championships will take place
in Lausanne, Switzerland (the
home of the
International Olympic Committee) on August 31 to September 7.
The new 6-5-4
team size and format will be used and, of course, no compulsories.
The
tentative schedule is:

Unfortunately, I
seem to have misplaced
that issue. {:-< However, the jist
of the
interview was that she had moved back to Karolyi's because her brother
was
miserable in Oklahoma. She then
moved back to Dynamo because she
was happier at
Dynamo. At the time of the
interview, her ankle was in a
cast, but she was
planning to get back into international competition in
the
European circuit (DTB, Swiss, Arthur Gander). That didn't happen,
but I'm assuming that she is still training for
Atlanta.

Reese's Cup Live
I would like to congratulate Rachele
(sp?) on a terrific job
last
night on Delphi.
She was at the Reese's Cup with her lap
top commentating and giving
us the blow by
blow of what was going on - as it was happening! She
managed
to give us scores, tell us the routines, commentate and
answer
our questions - all at the same time!! She gave us the feel
that we were almost there.

Some of the judges were celebrity judges:
Kim Zmeskal, Kathy Johnson, Kathy's husband (an actor), Kurt

The first 3 judges didn't have any favorites did they? (Kritie, Bogi
and Brandy have all trained at Bela's)
There
was also some exhibitions by Rythmic
gymnasts.

site for the following -- 1999 -- Worlds has yet to be choosen
but
Budapest, Hungary, Paris, France, and Indianapolis, USA are some of
the
cities making bids.

Fellow gymners,
I am watching the NBC show saved by the
bell, and the show is about saving
the gymnastics
team...that works our in really nice leotards, doing things
like cartwheels on the beam, with the crowd going wild...she
just got a 9.5
for her stuck roundoff
dismount. It seems like it is
things like this that
explain America's wrong
stereotypes for gymnastics

Well I did just that and mailed
Adriana back privately. So now I must
publicly
admit my error. I ran through my handbook last night and you are
indeed right. I
had been told by someone at a code of points clinic that
certain
sideways skills leading into backward skills of C or better value
would receive bonus. I have corrected my interpretation
after re-reading my
book. Thank you though.

I know
that some of the teeny tiny gymnasts that I have coached over the
years would probably resent that comment. I do agree that it
is a very easy
way to get from one bar to the
other, and that creative transition moves are
few
and far between these days. I would love to see more creativity here from
our elite athletes. But this comment I fear is way too
hostile for me to just
let go by. My beginning
level and intermediate level optional gymnasts do
that
move only for two reasons: 1. They have not developed the stamina
necessary yet to do more and (2) They are really short in
many cases and have
difficulty getting to the high
bar from a jam or hecht as yet. Most of my
kids work a bit wider than the FIG spread that is allowed.
So allow them to
learn and work up to those levels
of difficulty without the spectre of a gun
toting spectator taking aim at them. As for elite athletes,
again I agree,
but please, this is sport after
all.

voice your concern about cheap moves without advocating the execution
of our athletes.

There was an article in the
Houston Chronicle today about Bela and his
'96 hopefulls. There has been a
rumor that Kim didn't even train this
past week
and his response was printed. He said that she has been
experiencing
some soreness lately and they felt she should slow down.
That's what she's
doing. He also said she's not in Olympic form yet, but
not
to count her out because there's still time. The writer of the
article predicts Kim won't be in Atlanta though. That's
merely his
opinion, we'll see....
As far
as the talk about Bogi and training athletes that
represent
different countries goes he likes the
idea. He says it allows Kerri, Dom,
and Kim to see
what the "others" are competing and the same for Bogi.
It's
kind of a "checks-and-balances
situation".
We'll see how it comes out...

Nelli Kim--1980 Olympics
I got to judge with
Nelli Kim today at a local meet :) :) :)
We got
her talking during the break time, and thought I'd share this
story. I
commented to her that we here in the U.S. don't know too much
about the 1980 Olympics due to the boycott.
She
said she didn't place in the all-around there (was 5th) because during
the all-around competition, she looked up just before her
last tumbling
pass and saw Nadia falling off the
bars. It apparently shook Nelli a
little, and she fell
on the last pass. She did, however,
win the gold
medal on floor in the event
finals.
Nelli has been talking with Minot
Simons about his second book.
(She'll be
in it of course, so he
interviewed her. She said, "he
knows more about me
than I know about
myself!") Anyhow, run, put out
the money and buy "The
History of Gymnastics" which has been
mentioned here in the forum
previously. It's an awesome book, and I can hardly
wait for the next in
the series. Ultimately there will be 4 books as I understand.
The first
book is for 1966-1974 and so
includes the 1968 Olympics (Vera Cheslavka's)
and 1972 Olympics (Ludmilla Tourisheva, Olga Korbut).

Ice Skating Interrupted
Oh I could scream at ESPN.... I was enjoying a evening of ice skating on ESPN
The Legends... it was
great....and what do they do...in the middle of
the
broadcast the break for a special ESPN
broadcast which interupts and they do not
intend to go back to the ice skating...it was bringing the
results of the Super
Bowl and interviews....who
cares.....if I wanted to watch it I would have put my
TV on a channel which is was broadcasted....

I thought
Nadia's fall on UB was in prelims?
If so, Nelli wouldn't
have
made EF on FX, if she fell in prelims too.
Please correct me if I'm
wrong.
