The competition doesnt begin until 9:30 EST, so I dont think NBC promos will
tell us much about the results. I still dont trust Tom Brokaw, though

Subject: Will Moceanu have a new coach?

I have heard rumors that Bela Karelyi and wife will retire after Olympics.
Is this true?  If so, does that mean Moceanu has to find a new coach/gym?
She has really impressed me and to sum it all up, she's a sweetheart.

NBC suprised me - i didn't tape it...they showed in a "Dick Enberg
moment"  a story about Lilia!!! and they showed her on the medal stand
with her medal, as well as when bogi, khorkina hugged her....it was really
nice.  the point was to say that while we were all watching the US, Pod
was nailing everything and became the winner...that now she won't be
unnoticed anymore....

Good for pods!!!

Congratulations to:

US men for finally having a better All-around placing than the women.

Pods for winning the all-around - the most beautiful gymnast in the
Games.

US women's team on the Gold medal team performance and for really
pulling together and giving young    girls some good role models
(reminds me of 84 Men's Team).

Romanian women for placing 3 of the top 4 in the all-around (even
with a small,      unhealthy team)

Chechi for proving once again that he is definitely the "King of the
Rings".

Chow for getting the Silver on Bars (I thought Dawes should have
medaled as well)

Greece for finally getting a medal (and it's gold) in gymnastics
since the 1st Olympics  -  What a springy      guy!!!

Strug for finally living up to her potential.

Pommel horse gold medalist for waking up in time to perform
brilliantly  :-)

Subject: Re: Shannon a "quitter"??!!

Now I've seen just about everything.  What do some of these girls have to do
to earn respect?  It's hard enough to see that the American girls are usually
ignored when people on GYMN list their favorite gymnasts, as though only
Russians/former USSR countries, Chinese, and Romanians are worthy of the
highest praise.  But when Shannon Miller gets called a quitter because she
cried and because she didn't do the vault you (Jeff) would have chosen,
that's too much.  Like every gymnast in the arena Thursday night, this young
woman has trained for years, sweating out hours in the gym and all that that
entails.  She's dealt with pain and injury, gritted her teeth and competed
through it time and again. She's led two Olympic teams to medals.  She has
done so much for American gymnastics and represented America so well, both in
her gymnastics and in her deportment.  So she cried.  So did Khorkina.  So
did Galieva.  So did Dawes.  I'm sure there were a few others who shed tears,
too.  It's not a crime, and it's a very natural reaction to stress and
disappointment.  (Despite that, I also think Nunno said exactly what was
necessary for Shannon to hear at that moment.)  And then Shannon chose to do
a vault with a lesser start value.  There are a lot of possible reasons for
this, and I'm sure that "I can't win a gold medal now, so why bother" didn't
even BEGIN to figure into that decision.  Maybe, for one, she and Nunno felt
she had a *better* chance of scoring well if she used that vault.

Shannon a quitter?  Shannon doesn't know the meaning of the word.

Subject: NBC

Since NBC seems to be monitoring these messages I have a suggestion to
make.  Kim Zmeskal is a great gymnast, even if she didn't win the
Olympics.  As she said herself, she is not 'the girl who fell' but every
time her name is mentioned that's all that can be said about her.  And
could John Tesh please stop saying her Olympic dream was over when she
fell from the beam?  Don't forget that it was the compulsory competition
when that happened.  There was still the optional portion of the team
competition, where she performed beautifully.  She did qualify to the all
- around.  If she hadn't qualified, then it would be right to say the
fall ruined her dreams.  And although she was the media (and my) favorite
to win gold, tenth place in a field of the thirty-six best in the world
is nothing to sneeze at.  Stop making her sound like a failure.  Thank you.

Actually, the terms I would pick are 'overblown' and 'hilarious'.  Her last
two routines were rather tasteless, IMHO, and I'm a big Bogi fan
