I don't think it is
necessary to speak the same language in order to
congratulare
someone. A hug or a handshake can
say "Congratulations" in
the absence of words.

Kerri Strug:
She is a very strong gymnast and should of
deserved a little more recognition
before her amazing vault.

Sorry, the two judges are from Armenia and Gerogia.

9th in the World with a
major bobble on beam and she "didnt deserve to
be
there"? Come on, if the
3 per country rule didnt exist she would have
been
there, and if she had scored a 9.425 on her vault instead of a 9.200,
she
would have qualified ahead of Strug anyway.
The AA final is supposed to be
the Top 36 in the competition, but only 3
per team. Moceanu met the first
requirement, and
with Strug injured, she had earned her place.
I
think the problem many people have with Moceanu is
all the hype and
publicity surrounding her has made it cool to not like
her. With Strug
now
getting even more publicity will there be a backlash against her?

Female training
Hi, I know that in China, there are special schools to
train girls and
boys when they are only a little.
But what about
in the us? Where do they get those little girls? and What
kind of system is
that? a school? a temporary training center?
Anyone?

I am so happy for Shannon Miller. I'm glad she can leave these games
(and
possible the sport) with a good feeling.
HOWEVER...
I was thoroghly disgusted
with the reaction I heard when Roza feel on
her punch
front. I realize it is America, and
I realize that most of
the crowd knew that Roza's
error meant Shannon would win the gold medal,
and I realize that the crowd
is mostly comprised of people who are not
gymnastics experts. None of these facts can explain why
there were
CHEERS when Roza fell. I was so ashamed and very upset for Roza. What
else
can happen to her in these games?
It was pure disrespect from the
crowd to a wonderful gymnast. I give her credit for remounting the
beam
after such a reception.
Thank god for Dick Enberg. As
annoying as his commentary can be, he
"introduced" Podkopayeva to the world in his feature on her last
night.
I can assure you that many people had no idea who she was, or that
she
was even regarded as the best gymnast at the games. It is funny that
Tesh
and company never mentioned the fact that her grandmother had
died...that
certainly is an important change in her life and makes her
victory all the
more admirable.
About the lack of sportsmanship shown by the US women... It is my
belief that after the 1991
World Championships many of the other teams,
namely Romania and the
then-USSR, found a common ground in that they
were both "against"
the advantage given to the Americans in the
competition. So I can imagine that the gymnasts from
other countries
aren't too eager to talk to the US girls; but I think that
the US girls'
actions do not make it possible for other gymnasts to feel
comfortable
congratulating them.
The US gymnasts are not the most inviting in terms
of warmth towards
other nations. The language is not
a factor--I see
gymnasts who do not speak the same language communicate
through body
language and facial expression at many competitions, and it is
really
great to see it displayed so often in the USA. I'm not sure what the
cause of the
US women's "chilliness" towards other competitors is, but
it
obviously exists. (Although I do
imagine Amanda and Jaycie would
prove this wrong
were they in the event finals.)
For a long time, however, I have
noticed that the US men are much more
cordial not only among one another
but with other gymnasts as well.
Why
is there the difference among women and men of the same
country?
Again, congratulations to all of the competitors at the
Games. We, as
members of the
gymnastics community, must continue to strive to improve
the sport for
future gymnasts and future members of our community.
