This is why young girls have eating disorders. There is absoluteley
no
reason for height and weight being shown. It just puts more pressure on
girls who want to become gymnasts. Should thin people be the only ones
doing
gymnastics?

If anyone has addresses (e-mail or regular) for relatively
popular gymnasts,
could you send them to me?
Thanks :)

Re: Gymn in Press?
Hi Gymners,
In
Rachele's overview of Gymn-related
articles, she happened to mention the
article I
co-wrote.
> Salto (Belgium Gymnastics Federation) [mentioned in Erik's
>
Gymnaestrada article last month]
Seeing it mentioned
this way, I feel I have to correct some details.
First of all, I can't take
all the credits for the article. The main story
(our
club's Gymnaestrada participation) is written by Luc Schaltin, our
club's
secretary. I just wrote a small part, emphasizing on the
Gymnaestrada being an meeting
place for gymnastic-minded people from all
over
the world. I explain how I got in contact with Helen from South
Africa, by means of our beloved Gymn-forum.
For
a full explanation on how to join Gymn and on the other
internet-goodies for gymnasts (FTP, WWW, lots of pictures,
etc.), the Salto
readers will have to wait for
another 2 months (Salto is a bi-monthly
magazine),
as I am still working on that one. BTW, since the deadline for
submitting articles was somewhere this week, our first
article (the one in
that's Rachele's
list) hasn't been printed yet. It will be in the
september edition (coming in about two weeks, I
guess). The article I am
about to write should be
ready for the november edition.
Another thing I need
to clarify, is that Salto is *NOT* published by *THE*
Belgian Gymnastics
Federation, but merely by one of the many federations
that
do exist over here: the "Katholieke Vlaamse Turnfederatie" (KVT)
or
"Catholic Flemish Gymnastic Federation".
I'll write something more about
these different
federations and about the general situation of Belgian
Gymnastics
in a seperate mail.
Bye for now and
... Happy Gymnastics,
Erik.

Need your Input
Fellow subscribers:
I am sending this post on
behalf of Lyn (***@enternet.com.au).
Evidently
Lyn is having some trouble posting to the list from overseas and she
had asked me to pass along her message. Evidently she is very interested in
our discussion of foreign gymnasts in the NCAA because her
daughter will soon
be joining a team hear in the
US. She is concerned about how
people (teammates
and the general public will
react to her daughter as a "foreign" member of the
team. She asks
for any comments or views that you may have (pro or con).
Please e-mail
directly to her.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: height and weight
Reading all of these comments about height and
weight brings to mind
my experience with a
"weight problem" when I was 12 years old. We
had just
moved to a new city and went to check out the (only) gym in
town. The coach
would not allow _anyone_ on his competitive team
that
was over 100lbs. regardless of height.
I was 5'2" and weighed
110lbs. My parents said _NO WAY_ was I
going to try to drop 10 lbs.
I was healthy as I was. At the time, I was a Class II
gymnast,
almost ready to move to ClassI. He said
I could be on his exhibition
team, but I wanted to
compete and wanted nothing to do with him.
The only other choice I had was to
compete for my junior high
school. Everyone had to do Class IV compulsories
(I started
competing those routines when I was 7). We were allowed to do
optionals in high school, but,
needless to say, I had lost several
years. By the time I went back to that
gym in high school for extra
workout time, the coach had a change of heart (sort of) about the
weight
thing. As his best gymnasts got
older, not a single one of
them weighed under 100lbs. , and not one of them was even a
little chubby.
Anyway, has anyone else heard of an absolute cutoff
weight for
competing, without taking height and
build into account? Or was I
just "lucky" to find this
wacko?!

Hooray!!!! How great
to hear that these parents got involved, and stood firm
on
what was healthy and appropriate for their child! I think this makes a
huge difference for the gymnast, who isn't necessarily old
enough to
understand when a coach is out of
line. I'm only sorry you lost so
many
years of gymnastics because of this
"wacko," as you put it, which is just
what
he was.

Visualization,dreams
I
know this may sound weird and everything but I discovered something
the other night while I was in bed. Well, sometimes at night, I
visualize doing a certain skill while trying to go to sleep,
for fun. I
usually
think about bar skills. Anyway, the
other night I was
thinking about doing a free-hip
full-piroutte, but I was laying on my
side, and I couldn't visualize it. I mean I couldn't perform it in
my head. I felt
like I was tilted. So, I turned
over on my back and
had no problem. Weird, huh! Try it. Thought I would throw out
something different.
And, does anyone ever have tumbling dreams? I
love
those. I like doing front tumbling,
and finally, a few weeks ago
I performed a double front(in
my dream). Funny ain't it?!

GYMNASTICS IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED
HI everyone----
Robin & Jayce Phelps made Sports Illustraded's
"Faces in the Crowd," for
winning the Jr & Senior Divisions from the US Classic. Other than
that, the
article didn't say much else but their
grades in school (Robin going into
8th, Jayce going into 10th) and that they were not related.
I
also got a letter from Robin today saying that No, she's not related at
all
to Jaycie, and she
thinks it's "pretty cool" that she & Jaycie
go to the same
gym. She said she thinks of Jaycie as a sister because they are good friends.
That's
all 4 now.

Fan Mail #2
Hi again-----
I'm back. Since I recieved an overwhelming response to my previous post,
I
thought I'd add another one with some more
letters. Today we will feature
Jamie Dantzscher,
Kerri Strug, and Doni
Thompson.

USA Gymnastics
Dear Jessi,
Thank you for your letter. Here are some
things about me that you might like
to know. I am
13 years old, and I started gymnastics when I was 7 and a half.
I am 4 foot
9 inches tall. My favorite event is floor exercise, and then
bars. My near future goals are to make it to Worlds and the
96 Oympics.
For now and the next couple of
years I will be home schooling so that I can
be
flexible for my gymnastics training and traveling. I am planning to me an
emergency room doctor like my dad. I think it would be
exciting and ever get
boring!
I have two
brothers and one sister, two dogs named Bear and Wolf,
and deer
and skunks and racoons
that visit our yard. They are lots of fun to watch.
Well that's everything
there is to tell about me. Please send me a picture of
yourself,
becuase I am collecting the pictures of everyone that
writes to me.
Thanks!!
(she signed her
autograph with USA '96 underneath it, and wrote good luck in
gymnastics, too)

Dear Jessica,
Hi!!! This is Jamie. Thank you for your
letter, I love getting mail!!! Now
I"ll
answer all of your questions. I have been elite for 2 years, and I am 13
years old, also. Bars is my
favorite event. I have an older sister Jennifer,
she's
16 an older brother Jeremy (14) then me (13), younger sister Joanne
(11),
younger brother Johnny (9) then twin sisters named Jayline
and Janelle
they're 7. My whole families innitials are JAD, even my mom and dad's. My
mom's name is Joyce, and my dad's is John. I think having a
big family is
fun. I don't have a picture at the
time, but I will be getting one soon, and
I definatley
will send one to you. May I have a picture of you??? Do you have
any brothers and sisters?? What are your highest scores on
every event???
Well, good luck in gymnastics, hope you do great.
Your
friend,
Jamie Dantzscher

Dear
Jessica,
HI!!! Thanks for your nice supportive letter.
I
switched to Colorado Aerials because I needed to have a consistand
coaching
situation and because I wanted to be
around other top level gymnasts. I'm
enjoying
Colorado Aerials.
My favorite event is probably floor.
Good
luck this season!!! I'm sure you'll do fine!!!!
Thanks again for your
support!!!
Kerri Strug!!!!!

Not weird at all, in my opinion! I was told my a coach once that to
prepare
for competition, I should visualize first
the best routine I've every done in
my life, in whatever
setting I performed it in, many times in a row, and then
after
this, I should visualize myself doing the routine in the place in which
I
would be competing. I usually do
this when I can't fall asleep in bed -
again, bars
is the easiest to visualize (any ideas why?), and even if it
hasn't always made me do better in competitions (o.k., I'll
admit bars is my
worst event), it does give me
more confidence in workouts. Has
anyone else
heard about this method? Any ideas on its
effectiveness, or similar methods?

GYMNASTICS!!!!!!
Yeah!!!!!!!
While I was working on my boring
biology homework I was flipping
through the pages
and I saw a picture of Kathy Johnson on the uneven
bars.
Thay had some type of caption under it saying what
her name is
and I think something about nerves and
her being flexible enough to do
that move.
Also,
last year I came across a picture of a male gymnast on rings
(possible Kurt Thomas?) in my math
(actually pre-algebra) book and a
few story
problems about gymnatics, I think having to do
something with
scores.
Last year there were
also some sentences that we had to correct or find
verbs
in or something about Nadia Comaneci.
In our spelling book in 6th grade
there was a picture of a gymnast and
a whole
section of sentences having to do with gymnastics.
We just thought that
maybe a few people out there cared. Bye!!!!!

cartwheels on beam
Does anyone know how much a cartwheel is worth on
the balance beam, one
handed? How about a one
handed round off? has anyone ever done a
forearm cartwheel on the beam? Or a one handed round off?
Also how much
is a front handspring or roundoff w/ a half twist or roundoff
dismount
worth?
Thanks for your help!

I have some more questions about hw much things are worth butthis
time
on the floor exercise. How much would a front
handspring be worth or
more than one in a row? How
about 3 front walkovers in a row? How about
the
gym-acro series- split jump, roundoff-double
turn in the air? or a
split
jump-cartwheel-hitch kick?
Just wondering! Thanks!
