did I miss that one! I love every
opportunity to delight in
the beauty of a well
defined body. Was this during the Champions
Gala last
night? Dammit, I fell asleep! I hate NBC!
For you and the
rest of the list...I was slammed for reporting my thorough
enjoyment in Greensboro of the men's shirtless display (The
objectification
of both sexes does not justify the
objectification of one). I must
agree
though, that when you're trying to gain
legitimate respect, it's best not to
draw the
focus of your activities away from that.
I've never heard Nemov
complaining
that he's not respected for his gymnastics...just that he has a
great body. I'm
all for freedom of speech, expression, whatever--it's the
American
way. Just don't be surprised when
you're hand is called and all
you've got is a pair
of fives. [which
by the way equals ten = USA
gymnastics:)]
Okay
then...question of the week:
What is the best way for the American men
to gain respect for their
gymnastics? Continue their display of gymn sans shirts?
Take the high road
like it's beneath them
to display the bods they've worked so hard for?
What's the opinion of the list?

eligibility
It is my understanding that when athletes pose for
catalogs and such
their payment can be made to a
"training fund" monitored and controlled
by
USA Gymnastics to assist with training costs. This does not ruin
their eligibility.
Where the line is for personal
money and Training money, I'm not quite
sure but I
believe the training fund is how they maintain their amatuer
status. Big
money such as the post Olympic tour would go directly to
them.
Does
anyone else know this to be the case?

I never received my
book either. Is there someone out

has some kind of connection or number
that I can call. Also I was
wondering who can give
a great account of routines.
Especially of the
non Americans. To much of America Games are are making me sick, even
though
I live here. There are 196
other countries,
11 participating in Gymnastics. I would like to know what
happened and
the events that have have surfaced.
According to a USA Today poll about NBC,
people are tired
of gymnastics. Especially people from track and field.

(including the Americans) are kissing
each other - you can see Dina
kissing Moceanu, and if you look *very closely* you can see Dina
...
smile :) - at least it's a first for me, and
very nice to see, she has
such a beautiful
face
Gogean's floor music is a Jewish folk
song called "Avenu Shalom
Aleychim" which means hello and welcome sort of. I'm
thinking there must
be a
Russian vesion or are they much more liberal there
now?

laughing when she

tune played at most bat mitzvah's,
including her
own

Champions Gala & event finals
The Champions Gala last night was
simply awesome! It was so great to
see
some of those gymnasts actually having fun out
there. And Alexei is a real
character. The
US-Russian finale was great and I thought the ending was so
sweet. And Vitaly
introducing Li, even managing a smile as he did so.
I ended up
watching the gala with a group of friends, one of whom
is almost
as enamored with Alexei as I am, and
ended up spending most of the diving,
Dream Team, and mountain biking
breaks teaching her Russian!
And about the men's event finals NBC
"showed" Monday night. . . during the
late night coverage they did show the three medal winning vaulters after all.
The only reason I saw this was because I
left the VCR running after I went
to bed in case
there was an interview with Shannon and luckily that also made
my tape!

Wasn't the champions exhibition just spectacular?!! I thought is was
so
great to see everyone perform in a cool, relaxed manner and just
have
fun. Nemov,
on the floor was really cool! And
of course, the
last floor performance by the Mag7 all
together! Seeing the different
gymnasts
introducing each other was really neat also, especially when
Scherbo
introduced Xiaxang! This entire Olympic Gymnastics
competition
has been truly excellesnt!!

Next
time, do not let any publisist / agent convince you
of anything
*they* want you to believe; check it
for yourself; watch the routines during
the
competitions. That is the lonly way to make up your own mind (i.e. based
on facts). Moceanu was sold to the
media as 'our greatest chance for a medal'
by a
well-orchestrated machine that made sure she was promoted as such before
the Olympics. We
have stay critical of what we hear and read. Dominique did
the
best she could under the circonstences of incredible
pressure. If she
failed, she only did so because of the expectations the
media put on her, not
because of lack of athletic
ability. Sportmanship
implies that you rejoice in
winning because of
your good performances, but also means you know how to lose
gracefully. She
did just that. Anyways, when .5 point separates the 1st 9
gymnasts of the AA, they are all winners in my book,
regardless of their
rank...
Your message
sounds like "if you do not win the gold medal, you are
worthless", which I think ruins the Olympic
spirit.
Moreover, it is possible IMO that people using flash cameras in the
Georgia
Dome may have played a role in (or at least contributed to) Moceanu
falling off the beam; we are not dealing with a long jump
where the athlete is
hardly 1 foot or 2 above the
ground and falls on a pit of sand; we are dealing
with
athletes who are performing acrobatics
'on-4-inch-wide-beam-4-feet-off-the-ground'
(for those who missed John Tesh)
and potential for serious injury if they get blinded with
flash cameras.
Certainly the number of flashes from the benches that night
(despite numerous
warinings
to refrain from them) was enough to endanger any performance...

New low in NBC's coverage
Guess I spoke too soon. I praise NBC's Sunday night EF
coverage,
and they give us their sorry coverage of
the men on Monday.
Only the gold medallist on HB,
in a field that was obviously
spectacular, with 3
guys tied for bronze (you even got to hear
Daggett telling you what a great
competition you weren't going to see :-().
and,
past 2 a.m., 5/6 of the medallists in the men's vault
(only
1 of winner Nemov's vaults was shown). Good grief! Considering
they
didn't end their primetime show until about 1 a.m., they might
as well have gone another 30 or 45 minutes and shown us the
rest of
the men's gymnastics, instead of wasting
time repeating clips of
American track and field winners' medal
ceremonies. They also
showed a brief shot of the PB medal stand very
late--ecstatic
Charipov, happy Lynch, grim Scherbo.
John
Tesh hit a new low in broadcasting, telling us all
that
Amanar had run back from the ladies' room to
get to the floor
in time for FX finals. I suppose we should be grateful
that
he didn't follow up by telling us whether it was
#1 or #2.
Even inquiring minds don't want to know!
According to my
Russian teacher in college, unaccented o's tend
to
become schwas. If you're a typical American, that's the
sound
you give the two a's in
"America." So Daggett's ScherbO is
wrong, and Tesh's ScherbAH is closer, but ScherbUH is probably
still
closer to correct. Of course, now
that he's living in
the US, Scherbo
may have followed the centuries' old tradition
of
immigrants and adopted the inevitable mispronuciation
of
his name.
To add to the fun, the Dome announcer's been
mispronouncing
the names of Podkopayeva and Boginskaya,
along with many others, I'm sure. (Who is that announcer, anyway?
He
sounds familiar.) And Tesh continues to mispronounce Li
Xiaoshuang's
name, which I guess makes him even with Daggett.
Loved Nemov working the crowd in his FX exhibition. I still
wonder
what the non-Americans make of the crowd.

Gymnastics gala
I know I'm breaking Rachele's
1-message rule :( - but she's real nice
and
hopefully won't censure me, besides, with artistic over now the flow
should decrease.
I hope everyone got a chance to
see the Gala last night. I watched the
tape this
morning. It was great, the Russian men and the German highbar
gold winner (sorry, didn't see it so don't know his name)
were very
entertaining. The American gals were
great doing their floor routine and
Margarena and
YMCA - I'm Proud To Be An American brought tears to my
eyes
(yes, I know, I'm a patriotic sentimental fool). I noticed the
Russian
kissed Moceanu 3 or 4 times ;)

Jewel in the Crown
While the Olympic Gala was coming to its thrilling
conclusion I was filled
with joy to know that the
probably most prestigious medal in WAG will
shortly
be travelling home in the luggage of a very proud young lady.
I am
convinced, and hope that many of you will agree with me, that we have
seen the most magnificent Olympic Champion to date.
Think
about her expression, precision, power, amplitude, grace and dancing...
few, if any, could match her excellence.
To me she
is also the most beautiful Olympic Champion one could wish for.
Just marvel
at that perfectly sculptured body, powerful yet feminine, or
look at that lovely face, those bright eyes...
She also
was wearing the most elegant leo's,
the blue one at the Gala was
-very- classy, it
really showed her commitment to the ballet.
I am running out of
superlatives, and I haven't even revealed her name, but
you
have already guessed it right: it's LILIA PODKOPAYEVA!!!
She is the
most precious jewel in my Crown of Distinction, and she is in
good company too. Other jewels are Svetlana Boguinskaya, Henrietta Onodi,
Shannon Miller and some more.

Okay, now that we've determined that Scherba/Scherbo may be a matter of
taste,
does anyone have any idea how the NBC announcers (at least Daggett
and Tesh) got it in their head
that it should be Shwowshwong? And, if it's
definitely
wrong, why didn't someone at NBC (hint, hint, David) pass on the
message to them that it was annoying people? I do appreciate the fact that,
whether coincidence or not, the commentators added a bit
more tech. talk
(skill names, etc.) to their commentary after people on the list made the
suggestion.
A big thumbs up to Tim Daggett for
lamenting the fact that originality has
been
removed from the code. From Dean's
(I think) comments, it sounded like
the judges
were rewarding originality anyway, at least in event finals. But
it's
time to bring back the amplitude, virtuosity, and originality (or
whatever it was called) bonus.
A HUGE thumbs down
to NBC for stretching their "prime time" show until
almost 1:00 a.m. Monday morning (for you east-coasters) and
still not
showing more than one high bar
routine. Pardon me if my
recollection is
wrong, but didn't they manage to
fit in a Michael Johnson (and Shannon
Miller, I believe) interview before
going back to the local stations?
These
could have waited for the late
portion of the show; that's the kind of thing
people
expect from "Hyper Hannah" and Ambassador Ahmad. How can they not
show
more of the most exciting event in men's gymnastics, especially
considering the fact that five people earned medals?? (Two words: No
Americans!)
As
for John Tesh's comment about Amanar's
run from the restroom before
floor, I think it was
relevant and informative. I don't,
however, think it
deserved rehashing (one of
John's specialties) during the Gala.
That's all for now.
Here's
hoping that NBC gives a decent amount of airtime to the Rhythmics.
Note
to NBC: Petrova (world champ) and Davis (the
American) will not be the
only ones
competing. Please be sure to show
us some others.

Is the Post Olympic Tour the same as the Tour of World
Gymnastics Champions?
I am
going to that one, ROW 1 SECTION 2 at the Fleet Center in October. I
know that
the main people scheduled are Kim, Shannon, two Dominique's, John
Rothelisberger (sp.?), and Kurt Thomas. I got the info while at the Olympic
Trials.
So can someone tell me if this is the same thing,

Champions' Gala
I really enjoyed the Champions' Gala on TV last
night. I was pleased with
the Phelps/Borden/Moceanu beam
trio- The musical selection was great.
But
I absolutely loved the finale with the whole US Team. Elfi said it
best
when she said, "It is nice to see them
let loose and just be teenagers."
Does anyone know if they are taking
that routine on the road? It would
be
really nice if they did. They country would really enjoy it.

Korbut suggestions
I happened to catch a
feature on Olga Korbut last night on CBC. ( I was
okay, cheesy in typical
NBC fashion but I didn't think that it needed to be
shown
last night when a lot of other events occuring that
day could
have been covered. Why don't they save all of these things
and air them
in an Olympians special before/after
the games?)
Anyhow, the interviewers asked Korbut
what she thought of gymnastics
today and she
offered two suggestions:
1.
that they separate the field into two different
age groups so older (for
gymnastics) women would
be able to compete
2. that they put more emphasis on the artistic aspect of
gymnastics.
(after all, it is called ARTISTIC
gymnastics!)
I think that both are good ideas. It would be really neat to see two
groups
- one
for ages 15-18 or so and another for 18 and up. We've seen in
these
Olympics many "older" girls show that they still have a lot to
give
to the sport, but also that their bodies
won't let them perform some of
the acrobatics
like younger girls can.
I
wonder if it would work to have an artistic impression score like they
do in figure skating - at least for women's FX? Or maybe even a tenth or
two bonus for exceptional dance like the distance bonus in mens' vault.
What does everyone else think?

Amanar FX -- near miss?
For the second
straight night, the Teshmeister was kind enough
to
inform us that Simona
Amanar almost missed competing in the FX finals
because she was in the ladies' room when her name was
called. Does
anyone
think it might have affected her performance? I've often
wondered
what happened when a nervous gymnast needed to make a
last-minute
bathroom trip... or if there was any time to do so between
events. Tesh "enlightened" us. Now, that's true journalism! Can you
imagine
what would have happened had Amanar missed her
start? Someone
wasn't doing their job keeping track of her. Guess Moceanu
would have
medaled... I really wish we could have
seen Milosovich, the defending
gold
medalist, on FX. I find her
more interesting than Gogean or
Amanar. Milo
has a great personality and seems to deal well with all
the
hoopla. Loved her smirk to the
camera after AA!
