Elena Moukhina, accident
My ten your old and
I are having a debate. And, being
ten, she knows
everything!
Our debate is
on which skill it was that Elena Moukhina had the
horrible
injury that left here paralyed. I'm sure this question has been
asked
before, but if someone could let me know it
would be great. We have a weeks
worth of washing dishes
riding on this!
Thanks,
Connie

Re: Elena Moukhina, accident
Elena Moukhina was performing a "Thomas
Salto", named after Kurt
Thomas of the US. The move is a back 1 3/4 salto with 1 1/2 twists, also
called
a full twisting arabian 1 3/4. These roll out moves are no longer
allowed in women's gymnastics, as of the 1993-96 code. Does anyone know
the
official reason for this, and was it because of the incident with
Hwang Bo Sil of PRK at the 1991 FISU Games?
Chris.

Re: Elena Moukhina, accident
What is the
incident with Hwang Bo Sil? I saw her quite a few time
on
the 1992 Olympic games and she doesn't appear
to have any serious
injury. No wonder that He XuMei(CHN) change her floor
mount from tuck
full twisting arabian
1 3/4 to full-in between 92 Olympic and 93 American
Cup. Too bad it is no long allowed, it is such beautiful skill to watch.

Incident with Hwang Bo Sil
At the 1991 FISU Games, Hwang Bo Sil was performing a layout
arabian 1 3/4 (like a Thomas, but with one less
twist), and after
completing the skill, she could
not stand up, but tried repeatedly, only
to fall
down again and again. There was
another contraversy in that they
made her vault in the next rotation. PRK ended up winning the team
title, but by such a score that her vault was not even
necessary. This
incident was reported in IG's coverage of the meet.

Thomas saltos, etc...
I have seen many many
crashes on the Thomas salto and roll out moves.
I'm glad they have taken them out of the
code. Those crashes are
some of the worst I've seen. The gymnasts were landing on their
head
because they didn't get enough rotation. It would cause them to
become dizzy to where they couldn't even stand up. They would just
fall
over and would have to be carried off the floor. There were
many
concussions.

Subject: Gymn judging vs figure skating
judging
I'll agree that figure skating judging often seems
inexplicable, sometimes
even to other judges, but
here's my understanding of what the differences
are:
The
short/technical/original program is scored more like gymnastics:
Your
program as a base mark (akin to a gymnastics routine's start value),
which is presumably the highest score you could get if it
were
skated well and without errors. Then there are deductions (usually
ranges, instead of point values like the 0.5 for a
gymnastics fall).
So someone who skates an easier short program may still
lose to
someone who falls but has a higher base
mark. It's been my
observation that the artistic impression scores tend to
track
the technical merit scores in that the
former are hardly ever more
than 0.5 higher or
lower than the latter, so they probably have
less
discriminatory power than they ought to.
Also, bear in mind that
because figure
skating results are based on ordinals, the
absolute
values of the scores from a judge don't really matter;
the
relative rankings do. So judge A
can be harsher than judge
B on everyone, and the judges may still have
identical rankings
(orderings from best to worst)
for the skaters. (BTW, I
happen
to agree with the poster who thought that Bonaly and Kwiatkowski
were misranked relative to each other at Worlds, although
I'm
told that Kwiatkowski was judged down for
skating "tentatively"
[i.e,
relatively slowly and without obvious confidence]--the
judges
prize speed, and it's very difficult to judge that
watching
on TV.)
For the long program, the basic rule is that you're only
judged
for technical merit on what you actually
manage to complete, although
falls and other
errors may damage your artistic impression scores
by
disrupting the program. Therefore,
no one knows your
"start value" until
you've finished skating, and thus there
are no
"mandatory deductions" of that kind. (There are
other
rules about not getting credit for certain
repeated moves,
but these aren't actually
deductions, either.) A famous
example of this was Viktor Petrenko's
win over Paul Wylie
at the 1992 Olympics long
program--Petrenko botched his
second
triple axel, but since he and Wylie each completed
a
clean one, there were considered equal in that technical aspect.
Since
gymnasts seldom alter their routines in midstream
unless
they run into major problems, and are always marked down
for
errors, I can understand how the judging of a long program
in figure skating may seem odd to a gymn
fan.
For my money, the most consistent judging in a judged sport
seems to be in diving--not only are the judges usually
in
agreement with each other, but knowledgeable
observers
can predict the scores for dives with
fair accuracy.

It is the
only gymnastics related incident that I was so disturbed after
watching it that I could never watch it again.. She kept
trying to stand up
but was so disoriented she just
kept spiraling back down...
She also competed in finals the next day, fell off beam, I wonder why!

Programs
I have a question for all current gymnasts out there. Does the gym you
attend
have programs in which all students perform routines with the rest
of their class?
I come from a small gym, and our program is tomorrow.
It's
called
"Salute to America" and all the songs have to be patriotic
in some way. At
our gym, all classes perform their own routine, for example
a beginner's
class would perform, then a Level 2,
Level 4, etc. The finale is
always
big, with all the students doing
something. Also, about how many
kids are
in a class? I am currently in Level 5 and there are
only 3 of us at the
time, but we started out last
fall with 6. One more question: how
many
hours a week do you train? I go about 4 hours a week, but this week
I've
already put in 4 1/2 with another practice
tonight that will last about 3
hours. Thanks for your time.

Well, I've never heard of a FIGU competition <g>, but the

but if it's French I'm guessing "Federation

that). Does anyone know if that's

Chari Knight/JO Results
I was just looking at the results of the '96
Jr. Olympic Championships
that was held in Georgia
earlier this month, on USA Gymnastics Online
and it had Chari
Knight Hunter as the AA winner in the 17 an up group.
This couldn't be the
same Chari Knight formerly of Oregon State could it?
Does anyone know about this? It had her gym listed as NAAG in
Oregon.
She also won balance beam so it makes me wonder even more.
Thanks.
